I Think Mclaren-Ford isn´t a modest car. Perhaps isn´t de Best Car, but not a "modest". The Mclaren Chassis excelent, penalty with the ford oldest generation to Benetton.
andretti should have been more enthusiastic about bein in f1 and put more into it, instead typical american racers see F1 as "its a european sport" and dont care much for it.
all this talk about 93 and Ayrton beating Michael. In 92 Michael beat Ayrton in the title race, he finished 3rd And Ayrton 4th. Fact. He also did this in a worse car. Fact. and it was in his first full season. Fact. so in only the 2 seasons they both fully competed against each other, it was 1 all. cant people just be thankful that (with Prost) we were lucky enough to see the three greatest drivers ever race each other??????
in this race senna stupidly used up all his tires trying to stop prost and schumacher from passing him and he dropped back and then he used up all his fuel and didnt complete all the laps. he was a loser in 1993 and cried and wanted lots of money each race because his car wasnt fast enough
schumacher was king with a car less advanced than the mclaren.
'Stupid' Senna knew he had no chance but this shows what a great driver he was! The Mclaren was not as technicallly advanced as the Benetton which had traction and launch control (Crapski/Walkinshaw developed and they illegally used it in 94)
You are talking utter shite. Money wasnt the issue, Mclaren had lost their main engine supplier / sponsor and Benetton (Walkinshaw) had employed Czapski who was an electronics genius. The Benetton car was definately quicker through the bends and also able to preserve its tyres.
fenswiti, the Benetton team was outstanding: Ross Brawn, Rory Byrne, Nigel Stepney and Pat Symonds was the same that build this superior car with 93 Specs against '92 specs of McLaren. Just see what happens in Suzuka or Japan with similar car: Senna blast all, include the superb Williams-Renault with Prost driving. Do not forget the Prost factor. In his times, and Senna's too there are a lot of champions.
the usual senna discussion going on then.....tell u something different, prost had NO balls when he raced senna. id love to see senna race against alonso, kimi, kubica, jpm. they wouldnt take that crap.
I love these first few laps. Great fight by Senna. I wonder if he'd just let Prost by and saved his tyres, would he have been able to keep Schumacher at bay? Probably not; IIRC, the Benetton still had a more advanced Ford engine...if only McLaren had the best Fords all season - perhaps Ayrton could have forced Prost out of cruise control those last few races!
Benneton was far superior and Senna got the second place in championship. Look at where Andretti starts on the grid and where MSchumacher team mate starts. You will see how shit that Mclaren was.
And thats the only time Hakkinenn was faster than Senna. Why did you not mentio that? Why did you not mentio that Schumacher with a superior car didint make any pole position and wins and Senna was second that year with poles and wins, with a inferior car than Schumacher? Do you know why did you not mentio that? Cause you re just a Schumacher fan boy.
becaue schumacher had more technical failures in 93 and schumacher set up his car for the race unlike senna who was stupid to set up a car properly. schumacher always faster than senna in race
awesome start by Ayrton... He deserved '93 title... with a far inferior car, almost won the championship... this is for Schumy fans who think that what Michael have done in 1998 was out of comparison. And, it is interesting that both of the cars passed Senna in THE VERY SAME corner...
From now on, I will delete insulting or offensive messages to the drivers or beetween members of youtube. Or also messages in which the personal opinions pretend to change history.
We could only solve this mystery if Senna and Schumi continued living and batteling in further eras. Anyway, there was another driver, in my opinion, capable of disturbe Schumy, and that driver was Mika Hackinen, who, unfortunately, left F1 early.
Cars didn't have automatic gears, active suspension, trac control etc during Senna era. Senna was a champion with a less superior car in '91. Senna & Prost were 2 of the greats & went head to head on a regular basis. Shumi didnt have rivals for most of his champion years. Senna era had more talented drivers: prost, alesi, mansel, berger & shumi. Any of these drivers could have won on any given sunday (Senna was usually ahead of the pack). Its hard to say if we will ever see an era like this!
gee whiz u senna fans are sad.. get over him... not the best of all time..3 WDC ..schumi has 7 WDC ..senna changed teams to williams in 94, why didn't he do a schuey and change to a non championship winning team... why because he can't make an average team win championships.. schuey went to ferrari in 96 and became the most dominate man in F1 history. The FIA changed the rules to stop schuey winning titles.. and yes that is the facts... case closed.. my top 3 .. schuey, fangio, senna
mrcv8,,yes,,yess,,i'm so agreed with you!senna fans,,get over senna!!he's ain't here no more.
or to make it easier, lets put it this way, in senna era(1984-1991) he's the best, but from 1991 onwards, its Schumacher's era, which he's the best. how come you guys(senna fans) are gonna say that senna is still the best in the year 2000?impossible because he's not here anymore to prove it right?
I saw on this video a huge talent to try get others drivers out of track all the time. By the way, once you said about 80 hp less, remember the first and second titles won by Senna, driving a McLaren with 130 hp more than any other cars, and 2 seconds faster than everyone but his teammate (Prost).
dlmaniac, you don't know anything about F1. Senna is one of the fastest drivers (and also is schumacher) probably the fastest. Remember that he poled many times with his lotus, and compare his results to those of berger or andretti when he was at mclaren ...
At 1991 piquet was retired, 1992 Mansel, 1993 Prost, Senna was death in 1994. after all Schumacher needed to crash your car against car of Hill to be World Champion in that year (94). It was a shame.
Senna drove only 10 seasons, Schumy 17. Michael won its third championship at its 10th season - Senna (as well as Piquet) were three-time world champions as soon as the 8th season.
Today F1 is less competitive, so drivers get in younger and leave older. Any doubt that Alonso will be champion 5-6 times, and Hamilton another five times ? They are only 25 and 22 ! You Schummy fans beware of statistics, the kids will catch you...
Schumi left a winning team to join an absolutely miserable team and then converted them into winners, that's guts, sth Senna didn't have on his resume. Senna actually was more like a spoilt kid. He won only when he drove the best car. When being in a mediocre team like Lotus or Mclaren 92 / 93, he couldn't develop the car and always wanted to jump to a better team.
Senna won with the faster car only in '88, in '90 his car was fast as Prost's Ferrari (the McLaren had the powerful engine while Ferrari had the better aerodinamics) and in '91 his McLaren was clearly inferior than the Williams Renault
Ferrari's tech strength was its gearbox not aerodynamics. In early 90's, you could hardly find any team outside of British having good aerodynamics, that's the traditional strength of British-based teams. However, Ferrari's car, like the Williams 91 car, was not reliable enough, which made Mclaren the overall better car.
Ferrari in 1990 won most of his races in circuit is required a good aerodinamics (Mexico City, Paul Ricard, Silverstone, Estoril) and was only slightly less reliable than the McLaren;
That little aerodynamics Ferrari had meant nothing compared with what Mclaren and Williams possessed. The British-based teams benefited from having world leading aero-industry in UK backing them up, which was why it took Ferrari a decade w/ the help of Schumacher to finally catch up with British teams in 21st century.
Ferrari's chassis in 1990 was designed by John Barnard and it was the first carbon fibre chassis designed and was more technologically advanced than McLaren's chassis than in 1990 was using only an upgrade of the 1989;
in 1991 the only advantage that McLaren had over Williams was that they had better reliability because the Renault's engine was powerful as Honda's while the chassis and the eletronics of the Williams was much better than McLaren's
In 91, Williams was trying its TC, AS, auot-gear and aero-dynaimc package w/ a powerful engine. They brought in too much stuff in one shot so the car was failing a lot in the early part of the season which handed out easy pts to Mclaren.
he stayed with lotus for three years even when he got an offer from ron in 86'- you need to get your facts right before you start questioning other people.
Another observation on the Senna vs Schumi argument... Senna drove only 10 seasons, MS an astonishing 17 seasons, and MS after 10 seasons was only 3 times champion... By the way it took Senna just 8 seasons to get there, Piquet also 9 seasons, and Michael 10.
Reality is: Today drivers get in younger and leave older. Alonso will be champion 6 times, Hamilton 5 times - just because they're young. Will they be better because of that ?
After his 10th season, Schumacher already won 4 champions not 3, which included the 99 season when he missed half a season. As you can see once you get the fact right, Schumacher beats Senna fairly and squarely. Just drop your manipulation, it's not fooling anyone.
I don´t understand why so many have to say that Senna was better than Schumacher. It seems that all Brazilians hate him. Its a shame all the manipulation, sometimes i think that its because he´s German. Lol. He´s a nice person, and one hell of a driver, telemetry tests will confirm that he´s a much more sensiteve skilled driver than any other.
You don't know what is F1. The great Senna is beloved in the entire world even after your death. Senna was three times wdc competing against the most competitive drivers of the world. Schumacher had not opponent in your same level to fight. This explain your seven times wdc.
Seems to me that you don't understood the explanation. Perhaps Schumi has been competitive as much as Senna or Prost. The question is: why did Schumi has not beaten Senna at world championship of 93 even having a better car than Senna or why did Schumi has not a expressive better place at world championship of 91,92 and 93 while Senna and Prost fought against him.
how do you know that senna had a better car?have you driven both cars and able to compare??
after all its not fair at all, schumi just joined f1 at that time. he doesn't have the experience that senna and prost have. its already good enough that he managed to have a few fights with them even though he ended up losing.
Senna in your first contact with a Formula 1 car drove the championship car in a test. He in a matter of half a minute broke the track record for a second . if Im sure. In your first year with a Toleman, a very weak car he passed Lauda and would pass Prost , both of them in the far superior Mclaren that year, if the race was not interrupted in Monaco.
What makes you think Schumi had a better car in 93? Just b/c he had a better engine for the early part? Did you know meanwhile Senna had an advanced TC in his car while Schumi had none?
Im brazilian and I dont hate Schumacher. I saw Senna and I think he is the greatest pilot from 1984 season to now. There on both sides people that might think he has to hate the opponent. Schumacher was a sublime pilot no doubts about that but analysing all carrer of both you will see why Senna was unbeatable at qualifyings, cause he certainly is the fastest pilot who ever lived from 1980s until now.
This is showing Senna w/ an inferior Mclaren contending with 2 teams w/ a better engine and the novelty of active suspension. Now, watch Senna pass Shuemacher, Mansel and Prost on the FIRST LAP and take your objective conclusions. Search for "Ayton Senna larga em 4"
Where you Shumy fans alive when Senna came all the way from the back, passed every body, took first place from Prost at the end, and held him off with a blown gear box? He only had the 6th gear to work with. That's why you see the videos with Senna having muscle spasms and strugling to lift the trophy.
rocha8945 - you appear to have got yourself confused and mixed up several races.
The race you refer to with the trophy is the 1991 Brazilian Grand Prix. He did not come from the back then and he did not beat Prost, it was Patrese in second who ironically had gearbox problems of his own.
I don't mind you arguing a point, but at least get your facts straight and don't make things up.
I like the fact that you are trying to get the details of who Senna passed to assume the first place. I am speaking of my memory of over 10 years ago, and may have changed the name of the second place, but that doesn't change what Ayrton Senna did that day to win the race, and that nobody else has done since.
keirlumsden- There were other races that Ayrton came from the back to win 1st place on the podium. It would be nice if you could enlighten us with the details of those other races as well, like the year, the GP, and his starting position on the grid, or the details of his several pole positions that he were an outrageous 1 second faster than the second place.
I was a Senna fan from 1988 through to the Spanish Grand Prix in 1991.This was when I saw Schumacher first pass Mansell and then try to go round the outside of Senna in what was then a very inferior Benetton, so I became a Schumacher fan. I can't argue that Donnington was a spectacular drive (although at that point Schumacher's Benetton did not have TC).Back up your points with evidence.I personally don't remember these drives you keep mentioning from the back of the field.
No offense, but not true. Benneton had a top V10 engine & innovative aerodynamics, & were under scrutiny for a possible cheating with electrical components. Honda was abandoning F1 and leaving Senna w a mediocre car. Under those circumstances Senna was putting tremendous pressure on Williams and Benetton. If you are German I can understand your thinking, but I don't believe the hype. I believe what I lived to see: the best F1 driver of all times, whose life was cut short by a welded steering rod
I wouldn't be offended but I am somewhat upset that you continue to get your facts wrong. Benetton had a Ford V8 engine, which admittedly at that point was a slightly higher spec than the one in the McLaren, (it can be argued that this was negated by the wet weather anyway), and no traction control. They did not get that until a few races afterwards, their aerodynamics were no more innovative than that of McLaren. In fact the McLaren was a very good car given the circumstances.
You are German, aren't you? Or did I get that wrong too? You said that Bennetton had a "slightly better engine" and did not get active suspension until a few races afterwards. Are you kidding me? It is well known that Shuemacher had an outstanding car. His front wing by the way was copied by several other teams. He was the same driver, but he couldn't win back than because he had to compete with Mansel, Prost, and the greatest of all Ayrton Senna.
You said "Senna had a very good car given the circunstances". Honda was abandoning Formula 1, and Mclaren had to find an alternate engine at the last minute. That's some kind of circumstances, huh! Senna was still eating Shuemacher's lunch despite those circunstances. Don't get me wrong, Shuemacher is a good driver giving the circunstances of not having any real competition.
You did keep up to date on the Senna trial and the analysis of the evidence presented didn't you? You are aware that the reason for Senna's accident was a very low ride height combined with low tyre pressures.
This caused the floor to hit the surface of the track, negating downforce from the diffuser (where 80% of an F1 car's d/f is produced) causing a slide which Ayrton instinctively turned in to.
When the car rebounded and gripped again this turned him into the wall, the rest was bad luck :o(
are you talking about a steering rod or a steering column? i have seen theories about a broken steering column, proved wrong by telemetry data showing that there was still moment force applied through the column after he lost control. if you really mean the arm/rod thats cool, i've just never heard of it before. afaik the car just bottomed out. excuse me if i'm wrong, don't flame.
It might have been a steering column. I could be missing some details because I am speaking of my memory of 13 years ago. Williams was taking a lot of heat in 94 because of this weld. + all the drivers were saying in one voce that Ayrton couldn't have gone straight through the curve at that speed without mechanical failure. Thanx for the post
A CAR WHICH WAS LESS COMPETITIVE THEN THE BENETTON?? have you asked that to any formula 1 driver? More Hp is not at all the difrence to have a faster car. Especialists will tell you that. In Formula 1 its extremely dificult to judge who was a better driver. People seem to forgett that.
Better at cheating yet getting away w/ little to none punishment due to the loose management back then. Had it been modern racing rules, he'd have got tons of ban and DQs.
Schumacher donated 10 million in one shot to help tons of tsunami victims - people in desperate need of help, 'tard.
As for Senna helped people when they crashed, perhaps if he could have behaved a little more decent there would have been less crash caused by him in the first place. Senna was notorious for always would rather crashing into opponent than being passed.
rocha8495, this was the cause: the steering column. I explain some of the physics behind this accident. The data at the contrary as rodneystar said shown the angular momentum, was zero when the car suddenly turns to right and Senna has no chance to turn left his steering wheel to correct, like he did in his first correction, the a mechanical failure. It was a shame for all F1.
Remember that in 1993 Benetton Had a contract with Ford for the supplying of the engines. Mclaren at the end of 1992 had still no engine. so they replace this loss with ford. It was sure that the furniture given to Benetton was of course Better..IIt's Like Honda in Moto GpWould you tell me that the Honda driven By Melandri is the same of the one driven by Pedrosa? Bye!
Yes. After working with Mclaren for so long Honda bailed out of F1 all together, only to come back years later. Watch my posts to see if you remember some of the events that comes to mind.
I could agree with nomas, but i think Michael were a better strateg, along with his team they nailed the races from the start, pit strategy are one major factor in F1 now..Yeah Satanic, sunday will be exiting,i think Hamilton wins though!
Schumacher lost when he had an inferior car or he was beginner compared to giants like senna or Prost but it seems he had no rivals cause he was so good that others just seemed kids, with alonso he had an inferior car and bad luck.
i think between senna, prost, schmu on any given weekend they would be pretty much even. but, i think schum would prevail in the end...he's a better karter than both of them, he smoked 'em when they did the old f1 kart races...
It took Prost around 10 laps to overtake Senna with a V10. It took 3 for MS to overtake Senna in an equally powered V8. This is why I never thought Prost was agressive enough to be thought of a one of the 'greats.'
Thats exactly why Prost was so great. He won his races against many reckless drivers. He was a very responsible driver. Doesn't matter how many laps it takes to overtake someone, just that it gets done in the end.
If you have no knowledge of F1 in the 80's era, you are not qualified to make Senna vs. MS comment. You can't even make MS vs. Jonny Herbert analysis.
The amount of ridiculous comments on Youtube made by 19, 20 years old children just make me laugh. It's not only in the F1 section, in basketball, baseball... to even make accurate comment on this Senna vs. MS issue requires that you started watching F1 races on a consistant basis since the mid 80's.
Well, I think that the Benetton wasn´t the easiest and fastest car, it´s not fair to say! Schumi won 91, Senna 41 isn´t that enough said? I´m so tired at all this Senna and Hamilton mania, stop it, just because they´re Macs they´re not legends! Schuey forever! Forza Ferrari!
yes. it was only in 1994 that schumi received a truly competitive car, although it was still slower than the williams. in brazil senna spun out simply trying to keep up with schumy, in aida same again, in imola yes, senna was leading but he crashed+died trying to keep schumi behind him
Things making for the great champions only> Beat more than 5 times their pole position: Fangio 10 times in 1957!, Clark 4 times in Monaco, Rindt 5 times in Monaco, and Ayrton Senna, 5 times in row in Monaco.
people just think schumi's the best because he won 7 titles. with no rival, with the best car. people just don't know anything about F1. and Schumi is a great driver, and he surely is the last "great" driver to retire. the new ones are just kiddies compared to Schumi.
but even Schumi loving Senna, and every F1 expert loving Senna, people are just racist that they don't understand how can a brazilian, 3 times champion can be better then a 7 times champion. this is how stupid people are.
MS was a great pilot and still there is. When the people, like me, compare, [not until 34 years old age of Senna and MS] we obvious think about "Who was their rivals?" It is a natural thing. Today, for example, the raising star, Lewis Hamilton [my favorite] has a great rival: The 2 times World Champion Alonso with identical car. Like Senna in 88 with Prost. The rivals for Senna? 2 & 3 times Word Champions. It is big difference. And of course the greatest champions plays fair game.
Senna raced against Nelson Piquet (3 times world champion), Niki Lauda (3 titles), Alain Prost (4 titles), Nigel Mansell (just 1 title, but who knows about F1 knows how good and fast he was) and a LOT of other good drivers. There's no comparison... when Schuey DID have a real rival on equal terms, he lost the championship. (1997, 1998, 2005 and 2006) He sure is an excellent driver, but can't be compared to Senna.
nop... schumacher got a great car in 92, a great car in 93, the best car in 94, the best car in 95, the best car between 00-04.
Schumacher is a fan of Senna, there's no point in insulting Senna in schumi's favour, because Schumi was the first to be in Monaco this year, holiding the brazilian flah in Senna's honour. in the Museum of Monaco this year. i was there. and there are a lot of photos of it! just search ;)
Tirana MS was the best pilot since 1994 when Senna pass. He beat all this pilots until Alonso retire him. For me is so shame, because I like see the real potential of MS fighting against Hamilton and Alonso with similar car.
In 1993 Senna show how greatest was him. With this inferior car, only the right track MS and Prost can overtake with their superior cars. And if in this race, the rain came no came, we know the winner: Ayrton Senna.
In 1996 Schumacher showed how the greatest was him. With his inferior car, he kicked ass in the wet races and 3rd in the championship, while his teammate Irvine finished 10th. That shows how crap Ferrari is without Schumacher.
And in 1993 Senna showed hor Far he was from the rest of them, including Schumacher. Senna had a inferior car compared to Prost's and Hill's Williams, and Schumacher's and Pratese's Benetton. Still he got 5 Victories and finished SECOND in the season. While his team-mate Andretti finished 11th.
Prost finished First, his team-mate finished third.
Schumacher Finished fourth, his team-mate finished fifth.
Senna was the intruder in the middle of them, with the worst car compared to theirs. He finished second while his team-mate had a poor 11th place. So know, who's the best?
Off course it's an absurd comparison, but that aws not my point. I was talking about car's differences, and how Benetton was better and faster. Ricardo Patrese (Schumacher's team-mate that year) was as poor as Andretti and still was able to get a 5th place in the championship, while Schuey got 4th place. Senna got 2nd while Andretti 11th. Now you see the difference between the two cars?
The McLaren MP4/7A wasn't faster, it had no reliability too, and because of that lack of reliability Senna retired in Canada while LEADING, had an Fuel problem while leading in Spa, not to mention ALL the retires due to problems in the car while he was behind the two Williams (that were WAY faster than any other that year).
Senna had 7 retirements, (2 while leading) Schuey 4, and still he finished just 3 points behind him.
Lol... I think I should stop discussing F1 with you Tirana... you better LEARN about it before making such comments, I told you that a thounsand times now.
1993 When Senna had a much inferior engine (0,7 seconds slower per lap) he finished the championship much ahead of Schuey.
Senna's McLaren had a Ford customer engine, while Schumacher's Bennetton was Ford's "works" team. Therefore, the McLaren's Ford was inferior to the Bennetton's. Even so, Senna still managed to obtain second place in that year's championship.
Senna use the 1992 Ford Spec. Engine in 1993 with traction control. MS use 1993 Ford Spec. Engine wihtout Traction Control until April 1992. Look, Senna was faster than him in the curves, but slowly in the straight sector.
Early in that year the Benetton team had already developed their Traction Control and Active Suspension systems. This season just proves how FAR the rest of the pilots were from Ayrton. With the worst car from the front-running teams Senna Managed to get a second place, winning 5 GPs. If the McLaren MP4/8 had a better reliability, Senna would've won the championship.
Don't say bullshit. Michael didn't have the worst chassi at all. And Senna's ford engine was a costumer engine, 0,7 seconds per lap inferior to that of Schumacher's Benetton.
damon hill are nothing ´cause his debut was on a williams and that was the best car, micheal´s debut was on a jordan/benetton an he make´s the best of this car... alian prost are good driver, but senna is better, i think senna and micheal are the same driver´s...
no way to compare since it isnt possible. All these men were great in their own right. Neither one was better than the other. It is all subjective on how you define "greatest". Shumi is great, and my favorite because statistically he is the greatest, and he never complained about anything. Never the team, the car, or tires. The team knew he was #1 and it is a joke to not think there is a #1 driver in the team.
i really don't know WHY people still saying "schumi is the best" they didn't even watched Senna race. all young dudes. with poor knowledge.
Schumi said that Senna was the great, no more win the 94 championship in an interview to an british paper. also in 2006 after announcing his retirement.
he told it 2 times!!! you must be kidding me. every video i watch about F1. some stupid is saying "schumi is the best ever! 7 titles ! omg! so exciting" poor ones...
You guys have download the movie "Senna History" ? its a FIA OFFICIAL DOCUMENT(it's in BR, but you can understand the interviews 'cause are in english)
WATCH it. Prost says "i can't go as fast as him, i can't push that hard all the time, every race, every day, every practice"
Don't say "how pathetic" to someone Tirana, when you yourself is saying that "schumacher is the maestro" and you didn't even WATCHED Senna racing. Every comment of yours you show some poor knowledge about F1, you just know a few things about MS. Like Berger said "there are some pilots nowadays that think they could've beaten Senna, all I can say is that I feel sorry for them, they don't know how far they are from Ayrton". That's just how I feel about fans like yourself.
I Think Mclaren-Ford isn´t a modest car. Perhaps isn´t de Best Car, but not a "modest". The Mclaren Chassis excelent, penalty with the ford oldest generation to Benetton.

Classic speed-chases, & good over-taking. Over-taking is nothing without a good chase to support it! That's what modern F1 is missing.

in this race senna stupidly used up all his tires trying to stop prost and schumacher from passing him and he dropped back and then he used up all his fuel and didnt complete all the laps. he was a loser in 1993 and cried and wanted lots of money each race because his car wasnt fast enough
schumacher was king with a car less advanced than the mclaren.

Benneton was superior in 93, all experts agree with that, just a Schumacher fan boy could invert the things.
luisolf 3 years ago 3
lol no, benetton had a better engine but the difference was small, mclaren eventually got that engine anyway
mclaren had better traction control and active suspension systems which made it easier to drive. mclaren big team benetton small

In his times, and Senna's too there are a lot of champions.

uccellosenzapiume 3 years ago 2

I love these first few laps. Great fight by Senna. I wonder if he'd just let Prost by and saved his tyres, would he have been able to keep Schumacher at bay? Probably not; IIRC, the Benetton still had a more advanced Ford engine...if only McLaren had the best Fords all season - perhaps Ayrton could have forced Prost out of cruise control those last few races!

We could only solve this mystery if Senna and Schumi continued living and batteling in further eras. Anyway, there was another driver, in my opinion, capable of disturbe Schumy, and that driver was Mika Hackinen, who, unfortunately, left F1 early.
sBSonicR 4 years ago 2
Cars didn't have automatic gears, active suspension, trac control etc during Senna era. Senna was a champion with a less superior car in '91. Senna & Prost were 2 of the greats & went head to head on a regular basis. Shumi didnt have rivals for most of his champion years. Senna era had more talented drivers: prost, alesi, mansel, berger & shumi. Any of these drivers could have won on any given sunday (Senna was usually ahead of the pack). Its hard to say if we will ever see an era like this!

FilipeRosendo 4 years ago
Senna drove only 10 seasons, Schumy 17. Michael won its third championship at its 10th season - Senna (as well as Piquet) were three-time world champions as soon as the 8th season.
Today F1 is less competitive, so drivers get in younger and leave older. Any doubt that Alonso will be champion 5-6 times, and Hamilton another five times ? They are only 25 and 22 ! You Schummy fans beware of statistics, the kids will catch you...

rosun82 4 years ago
But the Benetton 92-95 was more compatitive than the Lotus 85-87
f1mrky 4 years ago
Schumi left a winning team to join an absolutely miserable team and then converted them into winners, that's guts, sth Senna didn't have on his resume. Senna actually was more like a spoilt kid. He won only when he drove the best car. When being in a mediocre team like Lotus or Mclaren 92 / 93, he couldn't develop the car and always wanted to jump to a better team.
dlmaniac 4 years ago
Senna won with the faster car only in '88, in '90 his car was fast as Prost's Ferrari (the McLaren had the powerful engine while Ferrari had the better aerodinamics) and in '91 his McLaren was clearly inferior than the Williams Renault
theultimateforce 4 years ago
Ferrari's tech strength was its gearbox not aerodynamics. In early 90's, you could hardly find any team outside of British having good aerodynamics, that's the traditional strength of British-based teams. However, Ferrari's car, like the Williams 91 car, was not reliable enough, which made Mclaren the overall better car.
dlmaniac 4 years ago
Ferrari in 1990 won most of his races in circuit is required a good aerodinamics (Mexico City, Paul Ricard, Silverstone, Estoril) and was only slightly less reliable than the McLaren;
theultimateforce 4 years ago
also in 1990 most of the reliability problems of Ferrari were on Mansell's car and not on Prost's car who was trying to win the championship
theultimateforce 4 years ago
That little aerodynamics Ferrari had meant nothing compared with what Mclaren and Williams possessed. The British-based teams benefited from having world leading aero-industry in UK backing them up, which was why it took Ferrari a decade w/ the help of Schumacher to finally catch up with British teams in 21st century.
dlmaniac 4 years ago
Ferrari's chassis in 1990 was designed by John Barnard and it was the first carbon fibre chassis designed and was more technologically advanced than McLaren's chassis than in 1990 was using only an upgrade of the 1989;
theultimateforce 4 years ago
in 1991 the only advantage that McLaren had over Williams was that they had better reliability because the Renault's engine was powerful as Honda's while the chassis and the eletronics of the Williams was much better than McLaren's
theultimateforce 4 years ago
In 91, Williams was trying its TC, AS, auot-gear and aero-dynaimc package w/ a powerful engine. They brought in too much stuff in one shot so the car was failing a lot in the early part of the season which handed out easy pts to Mclaren.
dlmaniac 4 years ago
he stayed with lotus for three years even when he got an offer from ron in 86'- you need to get your facts right before you start questioning other people.
topgear100 3 years ago
Another observation on the Senna vs Schumi argument... Senna drove only 10 seasons, MS an astonishing 17 seasons, and MS after 10 seasons was only 3 times champion... By the way it took Senna just 8 seasons to get there, Piquet also 9 seasons, and Michael 10.
Reality is: Today drivers get in younger and leave older. Alonso will be champion 6 times, Hamilton 5 times - just because they're young. Will they be better because of that ?
Lucianoianipires 4 years ago
After his 10th season, Schumacher already won 4 champions not 3, which included the 99 season when he missed half a season. As you can see once you get the fact right, Schumacher beats Senna fairly and squarely. Just drop your manipulation, it's not fooling anyone.
dlmaniac 4 years ago
once you get your facts right?
Once YOU get your facts right dont question other peoples mistakes. hakkinen won the title in 99, schumacher finished it in 5th overall.
however you were right that he had his 4th title by the end of 2001.

You don't know what is F1. The great Senna is beloved in the entire world even after your death. Senna was three times wdc competing against the most competitive drivers of the world. Schumacher had not opponent in your same level to fight. This explain your seven times wdc.
familiagill 4 years ago 3
Actually Schumacher had opponents in the same level, but when he had, he lost the wdc (alonso)
flaviodmc 4 years ago
yeah, agreed with u..schumi's way better than senna.he has no opponent because he's too good to have anyone challenging him.
remyshahrin 4 years ago
Seems to me that you don't understood the explanation. Perhaps Schumi has been competitive as much as Senna or Prost. The question is: why did Schumi has not beaten Senna at world championship of 93 even having a better car than Senna or why did Schumi has not a expressive better place at world championship of 91,92 and 93 while Senna and Prost fought against him.
familiagill 4 years ago 3
how do you know that senna had a better car?have you driven both cars and able to compare??
after all its not fair at all, schumi just joined f1 at that time. he doesn't have the experience that senna and prost have. its already good enough that he managed to have a few fights with them even though he ended up losing.
remyshahrin 4 years ago
Senna in your first contact with a Formula 1 car drove the championship car in a test. He in a matter of half a minute broke the track record for a second . if Im sure. In your first year with a Toleman, a very weak car he passed Lauda and would pass Prost , both of them in the far superior Mclaren that year, if the race was not interrupted in Monaco.
luisolf 3 years ago
What makes you think Schumi had a better car in 93? Just b/c he had a better engine for the early part? Did you know meanwhile Senna had an advanced TC in his car while Schumi had none?

rocha8495 4 years ago
Where you Shumy fans alive when Senna came all the way from the back, passed every body, took first place from Prost at the end, and held him off with a blown gear box? He only had the 6th gear to work with. That's why you see the videos with Senna having muscle spasms and strugling to lift the trophy.
rocha8495 4 years ago
rocha8945 - you appear to have got yourself confused and mixed up several races.
The race you refer to with the trophy is the 1991 Brazilian Grand Prix. He did not come from the back then and he did not beat Prost, it was Patrese in second who ironically had gearbox problems of his own.
I don't mind you arguing a point, but at least get your facts straight and don't make things up.
keirlumsden 4 years ago
I like the fact that you are trying to get the details of who Senna passed to assume the first place. I am speaking of my memory of over 10 years ago, and may have changed the name of the second place, but that doesn't change what Ayrton Senna did that day to win the race, and that nobody else has done since.
rocha8495 4 years ago
keirlumsden- There were other races that Ayrton came from the back to win 1st place on the podium. It would be nice if you could enlighten us with the details of those other races as well, like the year, the GP, and his starting position on the grid, or the details of his several pole positions that he were an outrageous 1 second faster than the second place.
rocha8495 4 years ago
I was a Senna fan from 1988 through to the Spanish Grand Prix in 1991.This was when I saw Schumacher first pass Mansell and then try to go round the outside of Senna in what was then a very inferior Benetton, so I became a Schumacher fan. I can't argue that Donnington was a spectacular drive (although at that point Schumacher's Benetton did not have TC).Back up your points with evidence.I personally don't remember these drives you keep mentioning from the back of the field.
keirlumsden 4 years ago 2
No offense, but not true. Benneton had a top V10 engine & innovative aerodynamics, & were under scrutiny for a possible cheating with electrical components. Honda was abandoning F1 and leaving Senna w a mediocre car. Under those circumstances Senna was putting tremendous pressure on Williams and Benetton. If you are German I can understand your thinking, but I don't believe the hype. I believe what I lived to see: the best F1 driver of all times, whose life was cut short by a welded steering rod
rocha8495 4 years ago
I wouldn't be offended but I am somewhat upset that you continue to get your facts wrong. Benetton had a Ford V8 engine, which admittedly at that point was a slightly higher spec than the one in the McLaren, (it can be argued that this was negated by the wet weather anyway), and no traction control. They did not get that until a few races afterwards, their aerodynamics were no more innovative than that of McLaren. In fact the McLaren was a very good car given the circumstances.
keirlumsden 4 years ago
You are German, aren't you? Or did I get that wrong too? You said that Bennetton had a "slightly better engine" and did not get active suspension until a few races afterwards. Are you kidding me? It is well known that Shuemacher had an outstanding car. His front wing by the way was copied by several other teams. He was the same driver, but he couldn't win back than because he had to compete with Mansel, Prost, and the greatest of all Ayrton Senna.
rocha8495 4 years ago
You said "Senna had a very good car given the circunstances". Honda was abandoning Formula 1, and Mclaren had to find an alternate engine at the last minute. That's some kind of circumstances, huh! Senna was still eating Shuemacher's lunch despite those circunstances. Don't get me wrong, Shuemacher is a good driver giving the circunstances of not having any real competition.
rocha8495 4 years ago
You did keep up to date on the Senna trial and the analysis of the evidence presented didn't you? You are aware that the reason for Senna's accident was a very low ride height combined with low tyre pressures.
This caused the floor to hit the surface of the track, negating downforce from the diffuser (where 80% of an F1 car's d/f is produced) causing a slide which Ayrton instinctively turned in to.
When the car rebounded and gripped again this turned him into the wall, the rest was bad luck :o(
keirlumsden 4 years ago
are you talking about a steering rod or a steering column? i have seen theories about a broken steering column, proved wrong by telemetry data showing that there was still moment force applied through the column after he lost control. if you really mean the arm/rod thats cool, i've just never heard of it before. afaik the car just bottomed out. excuse me if i'm wrong, don't flame.
rodneystar 4 years ago
It might have been a steering column. I could be missing some details because I am speaking of my memory of 13 years ago. Williams was taking a lot of heat in 94 because of this weld. + all the drivers were saying in one voce that Ayrton couldn't have gone straight through the curve at that speed without mechanical failure. Thanx for the post

topgear100 4 years ago
A CAR WHICH WAS LESS COMPETITIVE THEN THE BENETTON?? have you asked that to any formula 1 driver? More Hp is not at all the difrence to have a faster car. Especialists will tell you that. In Formula 1 its extremely dificult to judge who was a better driver. People seem to forgett that.

Think about Hill - the boring and always crying fag. and who has stopped 1994 after senna crashed?
jigglediggle29 4 years ago
rocha8495, this was the cause: the steering column.

It took Prost around 10 laps to overtake Senna with a V10. It took 3 for MS to overtake Senna in an equally powered V8. This is why I never thought Prost was agressive enough to be thought of a one of the 'greats.'
weallfollowmanutd 4 years ago 2
Thats exactly why Prost was so great. He won his races against many reckless drivers. He was a very responsible driver. Doesn't matter how many laps it takes to overtake someone, just that it gets done in the end.

but even Schumi loving Senna, and every F1 expert loving Senna, people are just racist that they don't understand how can a brazilian, 3 times champion can be better then a 7 times champion. this is how stupid people are.

And of course the greatest champions plays fair game.
joseavs 4 years ago

For me is so shame, because I like see the real potential of MS fighting against Hamilton and Alonso with similar car.
joseavs 4 years ago
In 1993 Senna show how greatest was him. With this inferior car, only the right track MS and Prost can overtake with their superior cars. And if in this race, the rain came no came, we know the winner: Ayrton Senna.
joseavs 4 years ago
In 1996 Schumacher showed how the greatest was him. With his inferior car, he kicked ass in the wet races and 3rd in the championship, while his teammate Irvine finished 10th. That shows how crap Ferrari is without Schumacher.
Tirana20 4 years ago
And in 1993 Senna showed hor Far he was from the rest of them, including Schumacher. Senna had a inferior car compared to Prost's and Hill's Williams, and Schumacher's and Pratese's Benetton. Still he got 5 Victories and finished SECOND in the season. While his team-mate Andretti finished 11th.
LouieGee 4 years ago
1993 Season:
Prost finished First, his team-mate finished third.
Schumacher Finished fourth, his team-mate finished fifth.
Senna was the intruder in the middle of them, with the worst car compared to theirs. He finished second while his team-mate had a poor 11th place. So know, who's the best?
LouieGee 4 years ago
Michael Andretti is a pathetic driver you can't compare him to the great Ayrton Senna.
Tirana20 4 years ago
Off course it's an absurd comparison, but that aws not my point. I was talking about car's differences, and how Benetton was better and faster. Ricardo Patrese (Schumacher's team-mate that year) was as poor as Andretti and still was able to get a 5th place in the championship, while Schuey got 4th place. Senna got 2nd while Andretti 11th. Now you see the difference between the two cars?
LouieGee 4 years ago
Then why did MS beat Senna in 1992 when benneton's ford engine didn't compare to Senna honda engine.
Tirana20 4 years ago
The McLaren MP4/7A wasn't faster, it had no reliability too, and because of that lack of reliability Senna retired in Canada while LEADING, had an Fuel problem while leading in Spa, not to mention ALL the retires due to problems in the car while he was behind the two Williams (that were WAY faster than any other that year).
Senna had 7 retirements, (2 while leading) Schuey 4, and still he finished just 3 points behind him.
LouieGee 4 years ago
Lol... I think I should stop discussing F1 with you Tirana... you better LEARN about it before making such comments, I told you that a thounsand times now.
1993 When Senna had a much inferior engine (0,7 seconds slower per lap) he finished the championship much ahead of Schuey.

realmente como o locutor falou era muito dificil prost superar senna no molhado ......era dificil pra qualquer um amigos !!Senna forever !!
JAILSONROCHA 4 years ago
Senna's McLaren had a Ford customer engine, while Schumacher's Bennetton was Ford's "works" team. Therefore, the McLaren's Ford was inferior to the Bennetton's. Even so, Senna still managed to obtain second place in that year's championship.

1º ayrton senna
2º alain prost
3º michael schumacher
no more...

POOr ayrton Ford engine...what this mean...michael with the worse chasis had the same engine by the way in that year PROST RULES
andriusssska 4 years ago
Senna had a Honda engine, by the way it was the worst engine compared to Prost's and Shumacher's.
cmtecarvalho 4 years ago
Senna had a ford engine what are you talking about?
Tirana20 4 years ago
Senna use the 1992 Ford Spec. Engine in 1993 with traction control. MS use 1993 Ford Spec. Engine wihtout Traction Control until April 1992. Look, Senna was faster than him in the curves, but slowly in the straight sector.
joseavs 4 years ago 3
Early in that year the Benetton team had already developed their Traction Control and Active Suspension systems. This season just proves how FAR the rest of the pilots were from Ayrton. With the worst car from the front-running teams Senna Managed to get a second place, winning 5 GPs. If the McLaren MP4/8 had a better reliability, Senna would've won the championship.
LouieGee 4 years ago
Don't say bullshit. Michael didn't have the worst chassi at all. And Senna's ford engine was a costumer engine, 0,7 seconds per lap inferior to that of Schumacher's Benetton.

micheal make´s his car to the best...
damon hill are nothing ´cause his debut was on a williams and that was the best car, micheal´s debut was on a jordan/benetton an he make´s the best of this car... alian prost are good driver, but senna is better, i think senna and micheal are the same driver´s...

The last year of F1. After that, it was a different sport.

no way to compare since it isnt possible. All these men were great in their own right. Neither one was better than the other. It is all subjective on how you define "greatest". Shumi is great, and my favorite because statistically he is the greatest, and he never complained about anything. Never the team, the car, or tires. The team knew he was #1 and it is a joke to not think there is a #1 driver in the team.
hotrod5749 4 years ago
i really don't know WHY people still saying "schumi is the best" they didn't even watched Senna race. all young dudes. with poor knowledge.
Taikamya 4 years ago
You guys have download the movie "Senna History" ? its a FIA OFFICIAL DOCUMENT(it's in BR, but you can understand the interviews 'cause are in english)
WATCH it. Prost says "i can't go as fast as him, i can't push that hard all the time, every race, every day, every practice"
Taikamya 4 years ago
How pathetic. A comment where Prost says that. So what? Senna may be better than Prost but Schumacher is the maestro of F1.
Tirana20 4 years ago
Don't say "how pathetic" to someone Tirana, when you yourself is saying that "schumacher is the maestro" and you didn't even WATCHED Senna racing. Every comment of yours you show some poor knowledge about F1, you just know a few things about MS. Like Berger said "there are some pilots nowadays that think they could've beaten Senna, all I can say is that I feel sorry for them, they don't know how far they are from Ayrton". That's just how I feel about fans like yourself.
LouieGee 4 years ago
Schumacher does not get owned only by Hakkinnen and Alonso. also Hill, Villeneuve, and he had Irvine and Barrichello protecting him.
look at this race! even HILL is faster than Senna! Senna's mclaren was a piece of crap! meanwhile the Prost/Hill Williams was WAY better.
and Prost couldn't overtakes him! hahaha! just funny.
