John Lennon loved this band. He called ELO "Son of Beatles". He said that "Showdown" was kind of like "Heard It Through the Grapevine" mixed with "Lightning Strikes" by Lou Christie, with the low strings from "I Am The Walrus" underneath.
@jeng3000 FUCKER...YET ANOTHER POST WITH A BEATLES DROP IN IN THE FIRST PAGE OF POSTS...WHAT THE COCK IS IT WITH BEATLES FANS...ARE THEY WORRIED THAT IF THEY DONT MENTION THEM EVERY FIVE MINUTES WE ARE GONNA FORGET THEIR THREE CHORD CHEESY 60'S BRITPOP GARBAGE....CHRIST NO CHANCE OF THAT WITH MCARTNEY AND HIS ZIMMER FRAME ON EVERY TV STATION AND RADIO AT THE MOMENT.
@mrbarleymob You have serious issues. Especially since you think "what the cock" is somehow an edgy way to say "why?" And your YELLING IN CAPS BECAUSE YOU THINK WHAT YOU HAVE TO SAY IS IMPORTANT WHEN REALLY IT'S JUST PRE-SUICIDE BANTER.
This was ELO's first single and one of my favorites. I had mixed feelings as I found out Roy Wood would be going solo. It would have been best to have a showdown between Jeff and Roy in the same band.
legendary performance....that re-verb effect that he has on his voice is not on the studio version....this what a band should sound like live....better than in the studio.....
As John Lennon said he thought it should be number 1. But as he cleverly pointed out he nicked or manipulate it from Marvin Gayes, through the Grapevine.
@ParagonB The other song Lennon said that was part of Showdown "Lighting Strikes again..."It's raining all over the world" He wasn't knocking it and said it should have been number 1. He was only pointing out how clever writers himself included get some of their ideas and make them their own. The whole groove of the song is based on Grapevine. The pacing. All songs are pretty much hybrids.
This was ELO's 3rd single - I remember it well. I think this is an AMAZING song! Clever and original yet souful - Jeff Lynne really sings it like he means it. (OK maybe it owes a small debt to 'Heard it Through the Grapevine'.) Then after this (and Mama-ma Belle) ELO just churned out lots of bubblegum crap. Go figger!!!

Consumerism? Like the evil consumerism that has led to the curing of diseases around the world, provided food and resources and has led to the elevation of rights around much of the world or do you prefer to live in a jungle and die of disease or old age before you're twenty-five, maybe live in an unheated box with no running water, like Obama's African brother? BTW, do you walk everywhere? Grow your own food? Treat yourself when you're sick? Or are you just mouthing dumb platitudes?
OK Lehamic, I have lost patience with you. I expressed a realistic opinion shared by many. From this you have focused on "evil consumerism" (no mention of this by me) which you then use to offer an entirely one sided unbalanced view. My final word of advice to you my word Nazi friend is to focus on what is said, respond in context and be less paranoid; nobody hates you!
I have been as polite as I can to you, given your provocation and this is my last communication with you. Good luck.

Why do you so engross yourselves in the US media led "image is virtually everything" mantra.

Possibly, you are a little out of sync here. What media led U.S. attack on image? Why you beefing with the U.S.? Anything goes in the U.S. regarding entertainment, hell, just look at the rap and hip hop singers! I wish I could still grow my hair hair that long. As far as contentment with the world, there are alot of people out there who want to kill you ...for religion, culture, politics, etc. Are you content with them?
Re read my post and review your comments my friend. No mention of a "media led U.S. attack on image"; no "beef" with the US; n issue with free speech and scope/scale of entertainment.

Issues with consumerism resulting in much disadvantage in the world, which all 'Western' societies lie accused of, myself included. Some little sympathy with those trying to kill me, you and the rest.
