It's so sad. "Politicians and industrialists" and indeed capitalists, seem to consistently choose the course of action with the lest amount of long term benefit even for themselves. It's like a big corporation that lays off half its staff to make its balance sheet look good for the quaterly shareholders meeting. Utterly insane.
I've been decrying this lack of a long-term view in science research for a while now, but it's only getting worse. We're even selling off the Forensic Science Service!
Mr. Eaves is very insightful. I hope someday society will allow science to move unhindered by fiscal or political concerns, and in turn reap the benefits of all the research that would allow.

Fun to listen Prof. Laurence Eaves chair squeaking away as he spoke, it's was almost Monty Python surreal to have in the background.
He makes a great point about the state of our World, it's bottom line not discovery anymore, very sad.

@solomsolomol He is upset because capital profit is taking precedence over research and discovery. As if profit is measured in bank balance alone.

What is the idea about the hand waving? Cannot remember seeing it before by him. It is a distraction.
Also Nobel prizes are won by people not labs.
Otherwise great video.

He always gestures his hands, like a normal human being :D
Maybe you're not as perceptive as you previously thought you were?

ORganizations may also win the Nobel prize. Have you checked the site of Nobel Prize?

I just checked. Only individuals have won the Nobel prize for chemistry. No organizations have won the prize.
The video is, as always, very good.
