This hide was starting to rot.. so it was pretty easy to flesh.. sometimes they are a lot harder.. but the hair always gives me more trouble than the flesh
@BushcraftOnFire What if you've already salted it? Won't you have to soak it? I'm trying to tan my own hide with fur (it's been salted for a few days). Does this mean I'll have to lose the skin? I largely don't know what I'm doing, and I'm sort of trying to figure it out as I go. This is my first attempt, so I just assume it will be a big fat failure.
No.. of course you won't lose the hide.. just rinse the salt off.. Not a problem at all.. just don't SOAK the hide for any length of time.. you don't want the hair to slip. And I am sure you will have a giant success :)
Best scraper you can get is an actual moose front leg bottom part bone and cut at a 45 degree angle. never cuts through the hide and easily sharpenable with a file ! very nice videos !
Ok, thanks for the quick reply! I just didn't know if there was an advantage using one or the other, or maybe different results. Either way it looks like a lot of hard work. Thanks for your expertise.
Is there an advantage to scraping it on a rack as opposed to doing it on an angled beam/log like I've seen some people do it? It seems like it would be less labor intensive to use the leaning log method as well as giving better support to really work the hide, but maybe there's an advantage to using a rack I don't see. Thanks for the informative info.
Ok your not going to believe this. My wife scheduled me to tan a hide this weekend for a homeschool project. I just log into my account to start searching for info and bam, first video in the subscription is about tanning. Yahweh knows and provides!
Please remember to wear gloves-- this is not stressed enough by the makers of this video! WEAR GLOVES~AVOID INFECTION !

why is this hide so thin, i thought cow hide was supposed to be real thick
IFknHateUTube 5 months ago
@IFknHateUTube
Cow IS thick... and very hard to work.. This was just a calf...

Also, what if I want to keep the fur?
suddenlyill 5 months ago
@suddenlyill
Yes.. the process is the same for about any mammal. As for keeping the fur.. don't get it overly wet.. and only work on the flesh side.

I dry and salt it on a rack to prevent curl and draw out moisture then take from the rack and flesh on a beam.

did you salt the hide & is that how easy the membranous material is coming off?
amaroq69 1 year ago
@amaroq69
I don't think we salted this hide. the membrane sometimes comes off easily.. other times it is a bit harder... work at it and it will come clean

There is always more than one way to do things. Some use a beam.. I don't

Is this that hide that you skinned from that dead calf in the Anza neck knife video?
777hw 2 years ago
@777hw
No it's not the same one. My son was working that one. This is a calf that died about a week ago and we were able to get the hide.
