Hi Grant, if you already have ductwork in your home i would suggest a central system. If you have electric baseboard multiple mini splits are a good option especially if your home is fairly open. You can install up to 4 indoor heads on a single outdoor unit, however for an energy star model you may be limited to 3 in order to qualify for the rebates without going to multiple outdoor units.
airconguy1 - unfortunatly there are no backup heaters in these units. if there was i wouldn't need the backup baseboard. the thermostat on the wall controls the backup heat which is just standard electric baseboard.
Without. Inverter based Heat Pumps can provide heat at (obviously) crazy low temps. Combined with the Mini-split concept where you get rid of all the wasteful ductwork, and the energy savings are phenomenal. I ripped out my central unit (2 story house) and replaced it with 2 3 ton external compressors and 7 inside units. Noise level is much reduced, and the power consumption at the end of a 107 degree day is less than just the blower motor of the old central air.
Wow, I knew Daikin units made backup heat unnecessary in most installations, but this is absolutely amazing. I can only imagine how low their VRV-C (Cold Weather) system available everywhere except North America (grrr) can do at this low temp.
What seer is this unit? Nice video by the way, they are great units!
