There's actually a lot to the movie in terms of social and political commentary. I haven't read the book but imagine that the criticisms were much clearer. I enjoy the movie for the campiness but also as how NOT to get across a message.

There's no democracy, the movie stars primarily white people yet the main characters are from Beunos Aires, and even the style of propaganda and dress from the military are all similar to what we've seen before. Yep, it's Nazi's ruling the world.

@inevitabletraitor The movie is the exact opposite of the book. The book presented the military as an important and valuable institution especially for young men and women to better themselves. The idea that only service members could be citizens was presented as an ideal to strive for; that the future of a nation would be in the hands of those who have proven their willingness to sacrifice for it. The big twist that the presumably foreign Juan Rico was indeed from America.

Has anyone bothered to read the booK? Do any of you actually read anymore? Heinlein had a lot to say about the responsibilities of citizenship, while at the same time criticizing the media. All this movie does is make fun of that.

I actually used this book to convince a new female navy recruit to sign up for a full tour. She later told me, "y'now, I thought that you were full of shit, but I get it now." The satire in this movie is totally misdirected.

Starship troopers was written in 1959, while 1984 was written in 1949. At the time the common concept of the future was a Utopian society is controlled by a militaristic government. This sort of thing was started by Aldous Huxley who wrote a brave new world in 1931.
