people need to realize, you can't compare Daniel Radcliffe to Robert Morse in this scene. i'm not saying Morse is better than Daniel, i'm saying that they both bring something different to the table. and a remake or revival of something can't and shouldn't be compared to the original since it's new and redone. and they might have a different view on the show.
Do you mean Daniel Radcliffe as in Daniel Radcliffe the actor who played Harry Potter? I didn't know he had the role, but I did know the show was back on Broadway. I'm surpised he'd end up on Broadway.
I don't mean to hate on Daniel Radcliffe, because I really do love him as an actor. I just don't think he's very theatrical, and his performance doesn't really compare to this amazing movie.
Morse is absolutely hamming it up here. It's cute :). It's also appropriate, because his character is a sycophantic psychopath: all show and no substance. All manipulation and no sincerity. That's the whole point of the musical.
the version with Daniel Radcliffe had more choreography, which was a definite plus. but the original was so amzing at being devoted to the acting and the parts.
@enjolras Have you not seen this before? That's the whole character. He does very well. I love Matthew Broderick and Daniel Radcliffe as Finch, but Robert Morse overdoes it the best.
@todderick42@stevenhonse, yes my point exactly, few actors, and even fewer directors know how to translate a stage performance to the screen. Here it looks grotesque and OTT, my annoyance shows through in the comments...
@enjolras With Robert Morse, the show won seven Tony Awards, the New York Drama Critics Circle award, and the 1962 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. With all due respect, your view seems to be in the minority.
@stevenhonse its understandable that his opinion is that way, his account name is enjoras, obvious a big fan of the super serious style of musical ie. Les Mis.
@Jrbiggz37 You are very insightful with a sharp eye for detail (figured him out from just his name and a few comments). Why is it the "stiffs" cannot allow a little light-hearted fun in the cinema?
@stevenhonse I don't know. I personally love both les mis and how to succeed. I'm still trying to figure out how someone (i.e. enjolras) can't at least appreciate Robert Morse's talent.
@RyanNeil95 I could not agree more. The people that think Brodrick and Radcliffe did it better also think that Madona was the best Evita Peron. In any event, I am glad to see people take an interest in musicals.
Robert Morse grew up just a few blocks from where I did in Newton, Mass.! Of course many years before I lived there!!! He graduated same school, too!! I love, love Robert in this movie. But, from what I saw on the Tony's, Daniel did an awesome job-no one knew he had it in him!!!!! Nice surprise!
This was great. I always love when people remember that acting is more important than singing in a musical. I love when people actually act when they sing in a musical.
I know that Daniel is better known by the young people these days because of his role in the Harry Potter movies, but there is nothing like the YEARS of experience on Broadway and the sheer cuteness of Robert Morse to pull off this role as the duplicitous but adorable J Pierpont Finch. Seeing DR singing the song on the Tony awards shows to me that he just does not do the role justice.. Didn't know that he could sing and dance, though - it would really be bad if he couldn't. I give him a B.
Daniel "Harry Potter" Radcliffe is starring on Broadway in the same role as Robert Morse!! He is going to be fabulous! I found out that Robert graduated from the same high school as I, Newton High School in Mass., but, of course, many years earlier!!!
@shejean Just returned from NY and saw "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying". Show was fantastic, and Daniel Radcliffe did indeed do a fabulous job. Great cast! Took my daughter (13 years old) and we both loved it.
The song and the show are great fun. Its interesting that Frank Loesser used this device in his two most well known musicals - this one, and Guys and Dolls. The unlikely converts singing a revival song in that show were the gamblers and small time hoodlums singing 'Sit down you're rocking the boat'. The suits at the top of the rat race were the right target for Loesser's satiric wit in 1961.
I like this movie and this song, it's just kind of ironic that a bunch of white guys in suits are dancing around and singing about the "Brotherhood of man" ... Ha!
@mapleleaves It'd be hilarious to see him as Wally now! I would love that! And to answer your question, no, they don't mention the show on Mad Men; they probably see that as a bit of an easy joke. Still, it's funny that it's running while the "real Finch" is running Sterling Cooper (Draper Pryce)!
It would be so awesome if Robert Morse could appear in the revival as Wally; could you imagine him singing this with Daniel Radcliffe? And then there's the line "I used to be a window washer too!"
Great comments (about the incredible talent of Robert Morse). But has anyone mentioned that one of the execs in this number was on The Griffith Show, where he played Emmett, I believe. I'm pretty sure that's him.
Just my opinion - this is such a great movie; I think this is probably the 5th time I've watched this video tonight. Robert Morse is so priceless. The others in the role, e.g. Drew Carey, Matthew Broderick, are just sad facsimilies. The choreography in this is awesome, and the actors are laugh-out-loud funny. Best parody ever. The whole movie is so incredible. (But I'll have to admit, 3:51-3:55 of this video is the best part of the film, with the 3 guys joining up and dancing across the floor.
In a recent interview the guy who plays harry potter-Daniel Radcliffe- is going to be in the broadway revival for the upcoming season...however, it was not mentioned what his role is, but i figure it's the lead (don't quote me on this)
With the recent centenary of the birth of Frank Loesser, I was astonished to read that Loesser considered himself a lyricist first, and a composer second. He was both, in equal brilliant measure.
@MrHanMi I agree. Frank Loesser is one of the greatest songwriters the world has ever known. There wasn't a thing he couldn't do lyrically and musically. He was the real thing, a songwriter for the people whose standard was beyond all but the elite songwriters' (Berlin, Porter) reach.
(putting on nerd outfit) Um, I believe it's actually Sammy Smith, veteran musical theater guy, who also doubles as Mr. Twimble in this great movie as well.
Could someone please help me find one of Robert Morse's most uncommon, but awesome and biblical involvements? In 1982, he did a TV Series called The Good Book, playing as the narrator, host, and some of the other characters where they tell the stories of the Bible and make it hilarious at the same time. I saw the Daniel and the Lions Den once as a kid and I really like it.
Why is everyone getting so philosophical in their analysis? It's just a movie!!! Robert Morse did a great job in a movie that portrayed the time in which it was written. Like all great shows, it has stood the test of time and become a classic. Leave the psycho-analysis out of it and just sit back and enjoy the show!!!
MrJoe, I have not read the comments first which I usually do, but I saw your comment right away and now i know it would be a waste of time to read the others if they are being goofy.. I assumed every one would enjoy it. Well, back to the vid for me I LOVE THIS SHOW!!
P.S.Knowing me I will go back and read the comments. But YES THIS IS GREAT
I would like to find a vid of Robert Morse doing his live stage version of Truman Capote!!
At least part of it is stage acting vs. movie acting. Everything is exaggerated on Broadway. Movie demand subtle. That was one of Zero Mostel's problems.
John Wayne, who was no great actor but certainly presence, was terrified with his first feature. Ford said "You don't act as much as react," which is similar to Dom Purcell's story of acting class with a woman writhed with emotion. At end Teach said "Dom did it perfectly. he reacted."
Burt Reynolds told Spencer Tracy he was an actor. Tracy said "Just don't let anyone catch you doing it."
I always think people see someone as "under-rated" if they're not doing more movies lol. There are a lot of amazing people on stage who never set foot behind a camera. I think the Tony Award on his mantle counts as him being 'well-rated' hehe.
Robert Morse is such an underated talent. He's wonderful in everything he does....but especially in the movie version of his great Broadway success "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying". A true delight! Thank you so much for posting this great clip for us to enjoy! :)
@JubalCalif Robert Morse is not "underrated." Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't he a huge star because of this show? He was awards for this show on Broadway. And this song was a big hit in those days. Not sure why you call him underrated. Maybe to you he is, but in truth he was incredibly respected and loved by audiences everywhere.
Whoa..chill out dude! No need to get your knickers in a twist, daddy-o! I only meant the immensely talented Mr Morse is "underated" in the sense that he never became as big a star in the movies & on Tv as he is onstage. I toally agree that he's one of the biggest stars the stage has ever seen! I love him & respect him as much as ANY member of his audience, OK???
In High School I played J.P. Finch and tried to model my performance off of Morse. However, none can really copy his amazing performance (though Drew Carey and Matthew Broderick have done some amazing things with this song).
Nelson Rockefeller was noted for speeches on BOM/FOG: The brotherhood of man/family of God. He was a real asshole...started the decline of New York stateby spending like a drunken sailor. Fucker grew up so rich he had no idea of money.
I saw this movie for the very first time in 1985-86. My relatives & I visited my grandfather at his apartment one saturday. This movie popped up on tv and we sat around to watch it. When there was still a half hour left to go in the movie, it came time to go out to eat. I wanted to stay and watch the rest of the movie, but I had to go out with the rest of them. So I missed how it ended. 12 years later I buy a used VHS copy of this movie on eBay & FINALLY got to see the movie in its entirety.
Thank you for sharing this. It is the only way I can get to see it because the distributors are as squishy as the rest of us; the DVD is not released in every standard format! (Not available). Thanks for doing their work for them! One more time. . .where's my crib sheet?
Thank you for your comments. By the way, keep acting retarded. It makes life fun. Plus, when you can act retarded in the face of adversity, no trouble is overwhelming. I tried to write the Retarded Manefesto but, not surprisingly, it turned out to be retarded.
I came in during the "Treasure Girl" scene of this movie last night and decided to stick around to see it through.
I'm 18 and love it! :]
This song is so great, he's so expressive! I'm sure you could create image stills of the whole scene and never see him do the same facial expression twice!!!
Sometimes when Im feeling depressed and I hear songs like this, I feel so much better because of the simple yet profound words and dancing was great too.
I have GOT to watch this musical.

BOB FOSSE?
peteradaniel 2 years ago
Yes, Fosse did choreograph this film. You can tell the movements are simple yet they seem complex, a Fosse trademark.
If you see the film in it's entirity, the number "A Secretary is Not A Toy" is classic Fosse.

I have always thought this movie was hilarious, especially this scene with a bunch of old men in suits doing a musical number. So original.
FUDGYPAUL 2 years ago 2
Do I detect Robert Q. Lewis as one of the suits??

God I have ALWAYS loved Robert Morse.
For you younger ppl , think Matthew Broderick. Oh God that guy is too old for you guys too lol. Anyway LOVE him

2:54 is my favorite part.

At least part of it is stage acting vs. movie acting. Everything is exaggerated on Broadway. Movie demand subtle. That was one of Zero Mostel's problems.

id like to state how i love that you said that
thank you good sir thank you

Two stories about movie acting:

I love him & respect him as much as ANY member of his audience, OK???

i love his face when he says "benevolent brotherhood" XD

In High School I played J.P. Finch and tried to model my performance off of Morse. However, none can really copy his amazing performance (though Drew Carey and Matthew Broderick have done some amazing things with this song).

Wow this is scary! Hope my firm does't hire this guy. A man who can turn a firm of hard headed business men in to commie loving hippies with
the power of song and dance is powerful indeed!

Nelson Rockefeller was noted for speeches on BOM/FOG: The brotherhood of man/family of God. He was a real asshole...started the decline of New York stateby spending like a drunken sailor. Fucker grew up so rich he had no idea of money.

No need to worry, Malthus, as capital appropriates "brotherhood" for its own interests. Your firm is safe. Now go home and get your f'n shine box.

Sometimes when Im feeling depressed and I hear songs like this, I feel so much better because of the simple yet profound words and dancing was great too.
wantabejunkie 3 years ago
Me too. You have a lot insight. Simple words seem to be the most profound. Thanks for your comment.
