  • I have GOT to watch this musical.

  • Hahah Darren does the same wonky faces(:

  • Ruth Kobart!

  • Oh hey, Bert Cooper! lol

  • I. Love. This. Song.

  • DREW CAREY DID IT BEST

  • i think daniel radcliffe is a lot better he is ok

  • i saw the Broadway show the Daniel Radcliffe was amazing

  • Robert Morse was amazing in this movie! This song is the best in it! Love the musical!

  • I'm doing this for musical theater for a presentation tommorrow. Wish me luck! this is my first time listening to the song.

  • You have to take into account the change of styles over the decades.

  • I can't get over that it's Bert Cooper from Mad Men.

  • people need to realize, you can't compare Daniel Radcliffe to Robert Morse in this scene. i'm not saying Morse is better than Daniel, i'm saying that they both bring something different to the table. and a remake or revival of something can't and shouldn't be compared to the original since it's new and redone. and they might have a different view on the show.

  • Daniel Radcliffe doesn't do J. Pierrepont Finch justice.

  • @ItsJustApollo

Do you mean Daniel Radcliffe as in Daniel Radcliffe the actor who played Harry Potter? I didn't know he had the role, but I did know the show was back on Broadway. I'm surpised he'd end up on Broadway.

  • @christmasmatt21 Yep that's him. I like him, but I don't think he fits. Robert Morse fits Finch to a T

  • I don't mean to hate on Daniel Radcliffe, because I really do love him as an actor. I just don't think he's very theatrical, and his performance doesn't really compare to this amazing movie.

  • Morse is absolutely hamming it up here. It's cute :). It's also appropriate, because his character is a sycophantic psychopath: all show and no substance. All manipulation and no sincerity. That's the whole point of the musical.

  • @saraha180 You are very insightful in an interestingly sharp way.

  • the version with Daniel Radcliffe had more choreography, which was a definite plus. but the original was so amzing at being devoted to the acting and the parts.

  • wow. the don't make 'em like this no more...

  • He's good...but I prefer Daniel Radcliffe.

  • I knew I saw this from somewhere when I heard about the Broadway show...

  • my favorit musical-we did it for senior year in high school, i wana see a remake

  • Cooper From Mad Men

  • @enjolras Have you not seen this before? That's the whole character. He does very well. I love Matthew Broderick and Daniel Radcliffe as Finch, but Robert Morse overdoes it the best.

  • I saw a Tigers trophy! That's big news for me, considering I come from Michigan!

  • @todderick42 @stevenhonse, yes my point exactly, few actors, and even fewer directors know how to translate a stage performance to the screen. Here it looks grotesque and OTT, my annoyance shows through in the comments...

  • When I was younger, I learned this dance, cause I thought it was cool, and I wanted to be cool like Robert Morse.

  • And absolutely pedestrian direction....

  • @enjolras With Robert Morse, the show won seven Tony Awards, the New York Drama Critics Circle award, and the 1962 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. With all due respect, your view seems to be in the minority.

  • @stevenhonse its understandable that his opinion is that way, his account name is enjoras, obvious a big fan of the super serious style of musical ie. Les Mis.

  • @Jrbiggz37 You are very insightful with a sharp eye for detail (figured him out from just his name and a few comments). Why is it the "stiffs" cannot allow a little light-hearted fun in the cinema?

  • @stevenhonse idk, robert morse is incredible, i idolize him and his style. Its incredible

  • @stevenhonse I don't know. I personally love both les mis and how to succeed. I'm still trying to figure out how someone (i.e. enjolras) can't at least appreciate Robert Morse's talent.

  • @enjolras remember this was originally a stage production. This style of acting is appropriate for the stage.

  • where is rudy vallie is he in this great number with robert q lewis

  • robert morse cant sing

  • Very good, but I personally prefer Daniel Radcliffe & the current revival cast. An excellent revival.

  • Broderick and Radcliffe both are very good, but Morse completely owns this role in every way. Perfect casting, perfect performance.

  • @RyanNeil95 I could not agree more. The people that think Brodrick and Radcliffe did it better also think that Madona was the best Evita Peron. In any event, I am glad to see people take an interest in musicals.

  • I just love Robert Morse's facil expressions.

  • Robert Morse grew up just a few blocks from where I did in Newton, Mass.! Of course many years before I lived there!!! He graduated same school, too!! I love, love Robert in this movie. But, from what I saw on the Tony's, Daniel did an awesome job-no one knew he had it in him!!!!! Nice surprise!

  • I loved this movie as a kid, wish I could see it again. This Robert Morse looks like a perfect mix between Jim Carrey and Mark Hamill.

  • @DocRunaway That is too funny. You are very perceptive and have a great wit.

  • @DocRunaway That is so funny

  • @DocRunaway Currently running on Netlix free streaming... Enjoy

  • This was great. I always love when people remember that acting is more important than singing in a musical. I love when people actually act when they sing in a musical.

  • @bigchicago01 Er, forget dancing?

  • @jonahfalcon1970 dancing is easily 3rd most important in that ranking

  • Robert Morse really reminds me of Jerry Lewis in this movie...

  • 2 people are not part of the brotherhood of man

  • @grenbaygrl1 I have to ask, who are the two people that are not in the brotherhood of man?

  • @grenbaygrl1 or sisterhood lol

  • God, I was in this play as a man, with a wig and fake mustache. This was one of my favorite songs to sing with the cast. -hums along-

  • What a genius musical.

  • Thumbs up if the first time you saw this was on The Drew Carey Show.

  • Comment removed

  • thank you very much. he is one very great actor

  • is robert morse alive

  • @TheRackme He's just turned 80, and has been in the last few seasons of Mad Men - a clever bit of casting.

  • @TheRackme He's on Mad Men.

  • @MangaManiac64 I think you mean Daniel Radcliffe. Give him a B but Robert Morse gets an A from me.

  • @stevenhonse I've seen both. Radcliffe was absolutely singing and dancing his heart out, but I have to agree with you. Robert Morse was better

  • I know that Daniel is better known by the young people these days because of his role in the Harry Potter movies, but there is nothing like the YEARS of experience on Broadway and the sheer cuteness of Robert Morse to pull off this role as the duplicitous but adorable J Pierpont Finch. Seeing DR singing the song on the Tony awards shows to me that he just does not do the role justice.. Didn't know that he could sing and dance, though - it would really be bad if he couldn't. I give him a B.

  • @MangaManiac64 Personally, I prefer Matthew Broderick.

  • Is it me, or were people just classier in general back in the day?

  • Saw Daniel Radcliffe on Broadway, AMAZING show. I'm gonna get the movie, the original and new soundtracks haha!

  • @ichitastical Just saw that today...OMG Radcliff and Larroquette were SOOOOOO good and so funny

  • Just saw the show with Daniel Radcliffe....it was amazing to say the least

  • @Snorlaxjim

    i know he was awesome

  • We are doing this show next week and all the techies like to dance to this song! It's my favorite!

  • I love the newest revival. Dan Radcliffe does such a different twist on the song. I love it.

  • Daniel Radcliffe is much better!! but this guy is good too!!

  • saw the show with daniel radcliffe..absolutely amazing,

  • Daniel "Harry Potter" Radcliffe is starring on Broadway in the same role as Robert Morse!! He is going to be fabulous! I found out that Robert graduated from the same high school as I, Newton High School in Mass., but, of course, many years earlier!!!

  • @shejean Just returned from NY and saw "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying". Show was fantastic, and Daniel Radcliffe did indeed do a fabulous job. Great cast! Took my daughter (13 years old) and we both loved it.

  • Robert Morse from MAD MEN !!! SO Awesome !!!!

  • This song makes me angry that my gender inhibits me from being a member of the great big Brotherhood of Men. XD

  • My school is doing this play and I'm super excited to sing this song :)

  • @xvrhernandez349 Is it Indio High school?

  • @Gregar900 no Peoria High School :)

  • @xvrhernandez349 Tear em up kid. I am sure you will bring new meaning to the roll.

  • they really need to have morse break into song sometime during the madmen run

  • The song and the show are great fun. Its interesting that Frank Loesser used this device in his two most well known musicals - this one, and Guys and Dolls. The unlikely converts singing a revival song in that show were the gamblers and small time hoodlums singing 'Sit down you're rocking the boat'. The suits at the top of the rat race were the right target for Loesser's satiric wit in 1961.

  • I like this movie and this song, it's just kind of ironic that a bunch of white guys in suits are dancing around and singing about the "Brotherhood of man" ... Ha!

  • I'd love to see Robert Morse make a guest appearance in the new revival!

Has this show ever been mentioned on "Mad Men?" It was running the entire time period they've covered so far.

(Robert Q. Lewis messes up his hand gestures toward the end, and it bugs the heck out of me!)

  • @mapleleaves It'd be hilarious to see him as Wally now! I would love that! And to answer your question, no, they don't mention the show on Mad Men; they probably see that as a bit of an easy joke. Still, it's funny that it's running while the "real Finch" is running Sterling Cooper (Draper Pryce)!

  • It would be so awesome if Robert Morse could appear in the revival as Wally; could you imagine him singing this with Daniel Radcliffe? And then there's the line "I used to be a window washer too!"

  • @smichelle65 I bet they have that planned in secret, just to surprise everyone.

  • "No kidding. Is there really a brotherhood of man?" Best line in the show!!

  • What a great singer.

  • Andy Griffith Show, I meant (sorry).

  • Great comments (about the incredible talent of Robert Morse). But has anyone mentioned that one of the execs in this number was on The Griffith Show, where he played Emmett, I believe. I'm pretty sure that's him.

  • @Andymanpr

Sorry, I meant The Andy Griffith Show

  • THEE absolute definitive ORIGINAL production with Bobby Morse, et al!

  • I agree 100%! Movie & Robert Morse - totally underrated.

  • I love it. This movie is so underrated.

  • My favorite part of this song is Mrs. Jones singing on the desk. Her voice is too legit.

  • 2 people don't understand the brotherhood of man

  • I fully expect the final scene of the last episode of Mad Men will have all the characters recreating this scene.

  • were is he

  • A SCHOOL NEAR MY HOUSE DID THIS PLAY AT ST THOMAS AND ME AND MY SIS AND FRIEND WAS IT THIS GO ROBERT MORSE

  • Just my opinion - this is such a great movie; I think this is probably the 5th time I've watched this video tonight. Robert Morse is so priceless. The others in the role, e.g. Drew Carey, Matthew Broderick, are just sad facsimilies. The choreography in this is awesome, and the actors are laugh-out-loud funny. Best parody ever. The whole movie is so incredible. (But I'll have to admit, 3:51-3:55 of this video is the best part of the film, with the 3 guys joining up and dancing across the floor.

  • In a recent interview the guy who plays harry potter-Daniel Radcliffe- is going to be in the broadway revival for the upcoming season...however, it was not mentioned what his role is, but i figure it's the lead (don't quote me on this)

Does anyone know anything else about it?

  • @lilsneez91 I do. Dan's confirmed to perform the lead in next year's revival. It's set to opening in late March. Check wikipedia.

  • @lilsneez91 Yes, he's Finch. And yes, I already have tickets.

  • ANyone else see the resemblance of Jeffery Donovan from Burn Notice in the guy on the right at 1:24

It looks just like him. I was thinking it was his father but I can't find anything online.

  • I have to say, that was one snappy little number...

  • With the recent centenary of the birth of Frank Loesser, I was astonished to read that Loesser considered himself a lyricist first, and a composer second. He was both, in equal brilliant measure.

  • @MrHanMi I agree. Frank Loesser is one of the greatest songwriters the world has ever known. There wasn't a thing he couldn't do lyrically and musically. He was the real thing, a songwriter for the people whose standard was beyond all but the elite songwriters' (Berlin, Porter) reach.

  • I love this song

  • Drew Carey performed this better

  • @dsultima I haven't seen Drew Carey, but I find what you claim very hard to believe...very hard to believe.

  • Robert Morse is the copy of one of my teacher! that's amazing!!!!!

  • my school did this as a play

  • i had the lead roll of finch back in 8th grade...ahhhhh the memoriez

  • Excellent video! Expert advice! You should upload your video to Ewisdomtv

  • I love this and was in it at school. I didn't apprecaite the clever satire and brillaint music at the time but I do now!

  • OMG this is amazing were doing this for my school and the girl that plays the secretary sounds exactly like her its adorable

  • so mote it be....

  • Wiccan?

  • No lol

  • Oh it just usually that term is used by wiccans...how do i know this? I am one. lol sorry

  • Gotta love Jonesy

  • I never get over how great it is that Robert Morse is now Bertram Cooper on Mad Men. It's just about my favorite cultural reference wink on the show.

  • his voice waves....a LOT

  • you have to love the "sassy" soprano of the secretary

  • yeah, but on broadway, she was an alto

  • his face around 0:30 slays me

  • Bertram Cooper!!

    :D

  • And now Robert Morse plays old Bertram Cooper in Mad Men.

  • No joke -- take a closer look 2:56, "Wally" the old guy in the red chair is in fact Moe Howard, but it's not him singing.

  • (putting on nerd outfit) Um, I believe it's actually Sammy Smith, veteran musical theater guy, who also doubles as Mr. Twimble in this great movie as well.

  • that lady is funny

  • Moe Howard? You are too funny.

  • take a closer look

  • Could someone please help me find one of Robert Morse's most uncommon, but awesome and biblical involvements? In 1982, he did a TV Series called The Good Book, playing as the narrator, host, and some of the other characters where they tell the stories of the Bible and make it hilarious at the same time. I saw the Daniel and the Lions Den once as a kid and I really like it.

  • BOB FOSSE?

  • Yes, Fosse did choreograph this film. You can tell the movements are simple yet they seem complex, a Fosse trademark.

If you see the film in it's entirity, the number "A Secretary is Not A Toy" is classic Fosse.

  • I have always thought this movie was hilarious, especially this scene with a bunch of old men in suits doing a musical number. So original.

  • Do I detect Robert Q. Lewis as one of the suits??

  • God I have ALWAYS loved Robert Morse.

For you younger ppl , think Matthew Broderick. Oh God that guy is too old for you guys too lol. Anyway LOVE him

  • Why is everyone getting so philosophical in their analysis? It's just a movie!!! Robert Morse did a great job in a movie that portrayed the time in which it was written. Like all great shows, it has stood the test of time and become a classic. Leave the psycho-analysis out of it and just sit back and enjoy the show!!!

  • MrJoe, I have not read the comments first which I usually do, but I saw your comment right away and now i know it would be a waste of time to read the others if they are being goofy.. I assumed every one would enjoy it. Well, back to the vid for me I LOVE THIS SHOW!!

P.S.Knowing me I will go back and read the comments. But YES THIS IS GREAT

I would like to find a vid of Robert Morse doing his live stage version of Truman Capote!!

  • He's in Mad Men isn't he?

    2:54 is my favorite part.

  • hes a great actor and i really do love this movie but he simply looks crazy in this video

  • At least part of it is stage acting vs. movie acting. Everything is exaggerated on Broadway. Movie demand subtle. That was one of Zero Mostel's problems.

  • id like to state how i love that you said that

thank you good sir thank you

  • Two stories about movie acting:

John Wayne, who was no great actor but certainly presence, was terrified with his first feature. Ford said "You don't act as much as react," which is similar to Dom Purcell's story of acting class with a woman writhed with emotion. At end Teach said "Dom did it perfectly. he reacted."

Burt Reynolds told Spencer Tracy he was an actor. Tracy said "Just don't let anyone catch you doing it."

  • I always think people see someone as "under-rated" if they're not doing more movies lol. There are a lot of amazing people on stage who never set foot behind a camera. I think the Tony Award on his mantle counts as him being 'well-rated' hehe.

  • Robert Morse is such an underated talent. He's wonderful in everything he does....but especially in the movie version of his great Broadway success "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying". A true delight! Thank you so much for posting this great clip for us to enjoy! :)

  • @JubalCalif Robert Morse is not "underrated." Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't he a huge star because of this show? He was awards for this show on Broadway. And this song was a big hit in those days. Not sure why you call him underrated. Maybe to you he is, but in truth he was incredibly respected and loved by audiences everywhere.

  • @WorldCupSeoul

Whoa..chill out dude! No need to get your knickers in a twist, daddy-o! I only meant the immensely talented Mr Morse is "underated" in the sense that he never became as big a star in the movies & on Tv as he is onstage. I toally agree that he's one of the biggest stars the stage has ever seen! I love him & respect him as much as ANY member of his audience, OK???

  • i love his face when he says "benevolent brotherhood" XD

  • In High School I played J.P. Finch and tried to model my performance off of Morse. However, none can really copy his amazing performance (though Drew Carey and Matthew Broderick have done some amazing things with this song).

  • Wow this is scary! Hope my firm does't hire this guy. A man who can turn a firm of hard headed business men in to commie loving hippies with

the power of song and dance is powerful indeed!

  • Nelson Rockefeller was noted for speeches on BOM/FOG: The brotherhood of man/family of God. He was a real asshole...started the decline of New York stateby spending like a drunken sailor. Fucker grew up so rich he had no idea of money.

  • No need to worry, Malthus, as capital appropriates "brotherhood" for its own interests. Your firm is safe. Now go home and get your f'n shine box.

  • I saw this movie for the very first time in 1985-86. My relatives & I visited my grandfather at his apartment one saturday. This movie popped up on tv and we sat around to watch it. When there was still a half hour left to go in the movie, it came time to go out to eat. I wanted to stay and watch the rest of the movie, but I had to go out with the rest of them. So I missed how it ended. 12 years later I buy a used VHS copy of this movie on eBay & FINALLY got to see the movie in its entirety.

  • god bless this music #!!

  • morse is so cute in the dorky-est way. it's awesome.

  • lehman brothers....merrill lynch...

  • omg we're doing this musical in our high school. i'm sooo excited to do this song. it's gonna be amaing

  • Lol it's Bert Cooper!

  • Thank you for sharing this. It is the only way I can get to see it because the distributors are as squishy as the rest of us; the DVD is not released in every standard format! (Not available). Thanks for doing their work for them! One more time. . .where's my crib sheet?

  • Thank you for your comments. By the way, keep acting retarded. It makes life fun. Plus, when you can act retarded in the face of adversity, no trouble is overwhelming. I tried to write the Retarded Manefesto but, not surprisingly, it turned out to be retarded.

  • I came in during the "Treasure Girl" scene of this movie last night and decided to stick around to see it through.

    I'm 18 and love it! :]

This song is so great, he's so expressive! I'm sure you could create image stills of the whole scene and never see him do the same facial expression twice!!!

  • Sometimes when Im feeling depressed and I hear songs like this, I feel so much better because of the simple yet profound words and dancing was great too.

  • Me too. You have a lot insight. Simple words seem to be the most profound. Thanks for your comment.
