These skydiving accident videos are making me feel safer about going for my first tandem jump this weekend. By the looks of these youtube vids, I would rather jump out of a plane than fly in one. Theres like 1 fatal skydive vid for every 1000 fatal plane crashes. I think I'll be fine, and I'm deathly afraid of heights. Hope her knee is better.

It should be very clear for any tandem passenger that he/she has to lift the legs before landing. She didn't lift them and that was a big part leading to the accident.

She looked like she had her legs up as well as could be expected to me. A small fast flying canopy on a day with little wind is not good for a heavy older passenger. Having said that, good for your mom wanting to share something with you and your friends and props to her for being staunch when hurt. If she wants to jump again pick a big canopy and a good wind for landing and wish her well from this Kiwi skydiver

It looks like an attempted legs up, but she didnt have the strength to do it. Looks like they're probably at max weight for the system, look how low she's hangin off the main harness. I've taken a few guys at max weight but they were able to get the legs up enough. Hope she heals up allright.

Well first things first....the tandem student didn't extend her legs coming in on final. If she had extended her legs this probably wouldn't have happened. Secondly really fat people should think twice about doing tandems for this reason alone...
Tandem passengers must remember five words on landing, "LEGS ALL THE WAY UP" and do it, or this is what can happen, passenger's feet land first, then tandem master flips right over ya 'cause his feet are not on the ground yet and is still flying forward :-\

Fair enough, maybe he didnt maybe he did... in the briefing they run through everything, im sure its not his first tandem, in the end this is a dangerous sport if not done correctly, for example, with the world championships that was hosted at my DZ here in SA 3weeks ago, a russian died (canopy control - Speed)
this is a high risk sport. And doing it you should consider this and take responsibility for the risk...
Being a skydiver, as well as her son, and having many instructor friends, I agree-- if you're a student-- or licensed jumper! But i believe no matter who or where you are, tandem jumpers should be able to rely on the instructor for a safe landing. After all, most everyone goes tandem first and if this happen to everyone most would NEVER achieve license status!! Many others would simply never jump again!!!!
You do make all valid points. I am still new at this sport (A-license + Cat II) i have just over 60jumps. On my 3rd jump i tore ligaments in my foot. It wasnt my fault it was our "batboy" the guy guiding me in. I myself first done a tandem and i think it depends from person to person. The instructor does take full responsibility for safe skydive including landing.
Still an awesome sport! And everyone should try it at least once :D
P.S The Russian skydiver who died a couple of weeks ago in South Africa at the CP World Cup, was at my DZ. It was really sad and extremely socking to see.

Legs WERE up... Bent And Forward.. But its like Wingnut said... overweight people have terrible landings.. when you have a 220lb person thats 5'5" strapped to you, its hard to walk out a nice landing, or set down perfectly. her weight, with the weight of the instructor, was clearly too heavy for the canopy used.
Before we crucify this guy, think about it. For one, it's very hard to determine canopy orientation from a handcam. I'd want outside video. Two, people who are overweight generally have trouble elevating their legs or cannot do so and inevitably have terrible landings. If their legs aren't up, the student is going right over and the attached TI is going to be on top of them. If you want to jump cool. Try to limit risk involved. All said, I hope that her recovery is going well.

@Krusty1985 about weight limits: I asked about tandem skydives at Skydive Dallas, the nearest dropzone to me, and they have a 200 lb limit on the tandem passenger.

This is the woman on the video. Don't feel bad for me, it was great & I am ready to go again when I shed some pounds. I lifted my legs but obviously not high enough. It was a great experience that everyone should try at least once. I loved it!!!!!!!! No one blamed the TI especially me. Your TI should not have made the low turn that he did. So... yes you should blame him. Its his job to keep you safe and to know that someone with your weight will dramatically change the flight of the canopy due to its wing loading

NEVER blame the student. He never called for legs up, in addition that was a pretty low turn and they were hardly back under the canopy before hitting the ground.

good point but he should teach it on the ground befor the jump or atleast thats what our tandem masters teach

@THESPOCK I just finished my first tandem dive last wknd and I'm a big girl... My instructor had us do three practice landing BEFORE the real thing. My legs were straight out in front of me and I helped pull the brakes down between my thighs. Butt hit first (as I expected), no problems. I'm sure my instructor isn't used to landing on his rear (he actually touched with feet), but my rear led the way with feet way up in the air. ;-)

Well I sure hope you go with a different tandem instructor if you do go again. I could be wrong, but it looked like the pair did a down wind landing. Ouch...

This is the woman on the video. Don't feel bad for me, it was great & I am ready to go again when I shed some pounds. I lifted my legs but obviously not high enough. It was a great experience that everyone should try at least once. I loved it!!!!!!!! No one blamed the TI especially me. Thanx for all your comments and the joy that I got to have jumping with my son. I loved it and it was well worth it

Your TI should not have made the low turn that he did. So... yes you should blame him. Its his job to keep you safe and to know that someone with your weight will dramatically change the flight of the canopy due to its wing loading

This sounds correct to me. I'm no expert (but I do have 24 jumps to my credit), but a somewhat minor and understandable mistake on the part of the passenger shouldn't result in broken bones. If he hadn't made the late turn like he did, he'd have been able to make a better flare than that, wouldn't he?

My hat's off to you, ma'am! My mom is older than you, but even if she were younger, she'd be as willing to go on a skydive as my dad is to eat anything except meat and potatos. Sorry it turned out as it did for you, but I'm glad you apparently still had fun!

This is the risk of taking quite obese and unfit people on a tandem. (no offense meant to your mom)
Unfortunate for the lady involved but the instructor would probably have stood it up (the landing) with a more agile passenger...

wow.........i could not stop laughing im sorry.....I went skydiving on march the 5th and of 09 everything went well but im glad i did not watch this video before cause i would have probably not gone. Kuddos to your mom for being a soldier. What did the company say. What did your mom say ot you.

we live in a small town. my family watches me skydive from home. the dz and plane owner is my friend. no real problem, shit happen huh, just move on. she says she'll jump again. if we let her:) lol
