I hear you MrKsizzle, but you know what REALLY makes it not quite sound right? When it's tuned down too low - like a quarter step below D, for example. ;-) Three of us here, all professional musicians with strong relative pitch and we all grimaced at 00:34 when you first here that open low D - painfully out of tune.

@MZustovic Tom is tuned a 1/4 to 1/2 step down on almost all song played live with Audioslave to accommodate Chris voice, because as a professional musician you must also know singer don't often sing the same live versus record. Did you already played on a Telecaster with 9/42 strings tuned drop D ? if yes you must know that even if the guitar is 100% perfectly tuned(wich is almost impossible anyway) when you jump around on stage you might hit the stings too hard wich can explain this pitch

@shelby777 Actually, yes, I've played plenty on a Telecaster with 9/42 strings tuned to drop D. I've jumped around plenty on stage playing Rage Against the Machine, etc. Hitting strings hard on any half-decent guitar doesn't alter the pitch drastically, even less so as the note rings out and definitely not severely enough to make 3 listening musicians cringe, as this video did. There's one very easy explanation - when tuning down, "Tom" tuned down a little too far. It's very easy to do.

@MZustovic i won't say you are wrong because i know you aren't, what your saying is very true, but what i tried to say is this and i know this is true because Tom Morello said it himself " Tom is tuned a 1/4 to 1/2 step below the standard pitch on almost all song played live with Audioslave to accommodate Chris Cornell's voice " because Mr.Cornell couldn't hit those high notes live with Audioslave.

@MZustovic - in total agreement with you, i love chris cornells voice and tom morello and the band are excellant but this attempt is clearly out of tune. I love this band as much as the next guy/biggest fan,..but its no use saying its good just for the sake and living denial just to prove ya faith to this band. the aol sessions were terrible too, check them out or not.

Sounds like it might actually be partially the intonation on the guitar as it's not as badly out of tune when he plays on any fret on the e-string (for example when he plays the e power chord on the 2nd fret of E and A strings in the opening riff) - but when he plays that string open it's super out of tune.

@bluebrain3d its not out of tune. in drop D the string is slacker, so if you strike it hard enough it rattles around a bit and doesn't quite sound right. Also, i don't believe he plays the low D string open in this song.

Well on closer listen you're right, it's the guitar that's out of tune, not the bass, but sorry dude, it's not the tone of the instrument, the bass string on that guitar is way out. Isolate that instrument and put that low note through a tuner and you'd see it come in at least a quarter tone down from where it should be.

Play this vid for any musician with even half good relative pitch & you'll see them grimace.

Seriously, the e-string on that bass isn't just a little bit out of tune, it's half way between notes, almost down to a D-flat. It's supposed to be drop-D but he tuned down too far. It's interesting that you all enjoy it - goes to show that not everyone hears pitch. For those of us who do, those low notes being so far out of tune is like nails on a chalkboard. And hey, Zustovic, you didn't post it, but you agree with it! P.S. stop leaving your account open in my man-pit.

@bluebrain3d its not out of tune, smartass. Its about the guitar. When Tom uses the Telecaster it sounds that dirty-weak way. Its about frequences, not pitch.
