SRV was a great blues guitar player no doubt but no ones greater playing the blues then Jimi Hendrix even most of rock n roll admits this from Clapton on down the line!
saw him perform this at RPI when he played with Jeff Beck on that tour, he blew Beck away!! Tragic loss for us all the day of his death, I cried for him
I love the racist comment!!! Albert King himself said "there ain't but one white man that has a black daddy, and that's Stevie". Albert proclaimed to be his godfather, much to the delight of Stevie. He was a man that respected the blues and idolized Hendrix. He never wanted to be black, he just wanted to be a part of the community that is the blues and make them proud of what he did. People shouldn't make comments when they have no facts to back them up. Ignorance is bliss, as they say!
@dvdsmlprstylr Hendrix wasnt over rated , the resone hendrix is what he is now , is because he created these rockish blueish music , dont compair guitarists , every one has there style
@dvdsmlprstylr hhmmm i honestly doubt that , your looking at how he just played it , any one can play guitar m, but write compose , style play your songs is a COMPLETELY different thing , Thats why Jimi is 1st.
@xEnZoProDucTioNz No, I'm not, I'm looking at him as a whole, including lyrics, composition and style.
Hendrix's lyrics may mean quite a lot to some people, but if you really listen, it's full of morphological and syntactical errors (his lyrics make no sense what so ever in the real world) - very much like Joe Bonamassa.
And the sound of Hendrix - his guitar has wayyy too much gain for liking, giving a very messy sound.
Hi, I find it hard to compare Stevie and Jimi. Both were attacking the guitar more than anyone. And both were fluent in their style. But remember that Jimi was from basically 1966 to 1970 and Stevie was later. Both excellent and my favourite players of all time.....
Best guitarist EVER apes his idol... I guess Hendrix is farther down the list of Col Sanders fried chicken southern white boys. Hendrix woulda beat the shit out of this cracker!!!!
Stevie re-invented electric blues and played every song from his heart always nailed every note. People like to compare Vaughan to Hendrix, Jimi was great but in a show down Stevie would win hands down no doubt in my mind. I saw he perform live and all i could say is WOW TOTALLY AWESOME! Incredibly talented gave me chills watching his pure raw explosive power plowing through every song like a mad man.Theres a hand full of guitarists that come close playing at his level BUT! theres only one SRV
@bluesrockshaker IMO Jimmi and Stevie had 2 differing styles that both ended up in pretty much the same place. Jimmi was sloppy and chaotic and Stevie is better described as controled chaos. In techinical terms stevie is better but soulfully Jimmi is the man. Either way they both give me goose bumps.
Respond to this video... please remember, bold titler of this clip, that not only stevie ray, but steve vai, clapton, beck , page, just about any rock or rock blues guitarist tell us that he INvented, and brought /blues/rock guitar playing to very high level.you have to take innovation into consideration if you want to rate an artist.. NOBODY was playing ANYTHING like what hendrix did, coming out of nowhere in 1967.He set the standard, and that standard is very high.
@bluesrockshaker i wouldnt be so sure about the showdown thing. watch the ( bad visual) clip of hendrix at fillmore easst, playing a lot of these riffs ....the first time they were heard in THIS universe. ("who knows"). hendrix died at 27. 10 years on , how good would he have been?, he was always practicing, learning. at the time of his death miles davis.wanted to record with him. i think stevie would have been in awe and getting a lesson. but it's like speculating about ali vs. whatever boxer
@bluesrockshaker "all i could say is WOW TOTALLY AWESOME! Incredibly talented gave me chills watching his pure raw explosive power plowing through every song like a mad man."
You'd say the same watching Jimi live. And a guitarist is measured by much, much more than just their chops in a hypothetical "show down". Yes, SRV is insane technically, but so was Hendrix. What Hendrix had that SRV didn't was his songwriting ability. SRV's doesn't even come close to Hendrix's.
@mustbeburtreynolds Your correct Jimi wrote his own songs that’s the difference that separate’s these 2 guitar gods.I’ve heard some of Jimi’s music where his tuning and timing was off he couldn't play finger style or slide or tune his guitar properly, used lots of distortion to cover up mistakes. Listen to Hendrix version of Come part II the solos in that are messy and sloppy then listen to Stevie's version. Stevie was technically superior. Could Tyson have beaten Ali? We will never know
@bluesrockshaker lol "couldn't tune his guitar properly"??? Are you high?
He used to spend upwards of an hour sitting with his guitar tuning it, that's how much of a perfectionist he was about it. He'd do 30 takes of a song to get it exactly how he wanted. To say he was sloppy is nothing short of absurd.
@mustbeburtreynolds "He'd do 30 takes of a song to get it exactly how he wanted"? Thats proof right there! and the reason was, he was a High Perfectionist, higher then a kite and thats probably why some of his live shows sounded off. When this guy was on his game he was huge.
@bluesrockshaker For example, give me five SRV songs that compare to... say Little Wing, Castles Made of Sand, Manic Depression, Spanish Castle Magic, and Stone Free. There's a dozen others I could pick.
@bluesrockshaker I've never seen or heard anything to equal this but I have to disagree about Jimi Hendrix - he was endlessly creative, inventing new sounds and new ways to wring them out of the guitar so that's a different talent and who knows where it would have taken him. Stevie is the winner within his sphere for sure, so good he stands equally with Jimi or better in phrasing and technique and sheer feel. But Jimi was the voodoo child.
@bluesrockshaker Reinvented blues? How?He was nice with the instrument . Hendrix changed the way people viewed the guitar . If it wasn't for Hendrix there wouldn't be a Malsteen , a Hazel, a Isley , a Prince , a Healey , a Satriani, a Slash, a Vai, a Trower to name few . And last but not least there wouldn't be an SRV as we know him without Hendrix. Some people just don't realize Jimi started a revolution . If you'd ask SRV when he was alive he'd tell you . That's why he covered Jimi so much .
@bluesrockshaker Man I love Stevie but in my opinion which I know doesn't mean shit,Hendrix was better but I think Duane Allman was better than either one of them but all three of them are just unreal.
Why do the ones with such awe-inspiring talent have to leave so quickly? After all this time, this music is still timeless. May his memory be eternal.
49 people are not worthy of ears...I agree..SRV is the greatest guitarist this world has ever seen...and watching him is like looking at perfection...
SRV is a straight Hendrix ripoff, I just think he's so damn over rated. Yeah he's fucking awesome at playing, but noway near the greatest. Rory Gallagher eats him for breakfast as a blues man
@jimmyzo3o Haha, I have heard the whole 'each to their own' and so on, but really - I feel like I appreciate good guitar playing, not that satriani/vai masturbation bullshit, but seriously - Gallagher over SRV? Please. Admittedly, his version of voodoo child sucks, nothing less. But he is definitely a better guitarist than Hendrix and anyone else you care to mention, in terms of technique and just what he can do with his hands, the rest is a matter of opinion, but not the technique.
@7th75thCallaghan And just like you don't have a taste for Gallagher (fair enough), I don't have a taste for SRV. You may think I'm a joke for saying Rory is better than Srv, and I may think the same of you but vice versa. Gallagher does it all, better than most on acoustic and fucking amazing on the slide... then his electric is just outta this world. Not to mention he's a better singer, more of a snarl which is what blues is ain't it?
@jimmyzo3o And to call him a 'straight Hendrix ripoff' shows that you don't understand the playing styles very well. I'm guessing you aren't a musician? Or at least not an experienced one. SRV has a beautiful percussive and dynamic style that Hendrix could never do, Hendrix used a shitton of FX pedals, SRV just uses natural overdrive boosted by a tube screamer, his control over the wood and metal of the guitar is far, far better.
@7th75thCallaghan I know what you're saying, technically he's one of the best there has been. It is my own opinion and not in any way a fact, it's hard to explain why I'm not a fan so I won't try. But put it like this; if I wanted to listen to this style of blues I'll just put on Hendrix... SRV, to me, just feels like a tribute act to Hendrix, it wouldn't bother me if I never heard him. It's also not really the style I play, I like the raw visceral bluesmen like Hubert Sumlin, Page, Gallagher...
A "cover" is something you see washed up bums playing in your local bars. This is a thorough expansion of a rock classic by a legendary guitarist who is often regarded as highly as Hendrix by other legends like Clapton, Santana, BB King, Buddy Guy and Albert King.
@NothingMaster ...There is one better than SRV, and his name is Carvin Jones! He is Hendrix, EVH, Clapton, and SRV all rolled into one! Check him out on youtube! Carvin is in a league all by himself...and he's still alive.
dude i was watching Kenny Wayne Sheperd's version from King of the Blues, and after seeing this, its blatantly obvious that a lot of the dynamics and licks he got directly from SRV's version. the similarities are blatant! (i think they're both great, KWS is a massive SRV fan)
Who's playing who's song? There are teachers and there are students! Jimi taught Stevie was one of his students!
Listen to Jimi play Hear my Train Coming, you can actually hear the sound of a train coming from his guitar. Nobody else has done anything close to what Jimi could do with a guitar. Listen to Machine Gun, Catfish Blues, Born Under a Bad Sign, and other songs played by Hendrix that are not commercially played on radio and you'll hear the greatest blues rock ever played.
Sheer talent exceeded only by a massive ego that never let his side men have a moment in the sun. Rory was equally as talented, played more styles and had great sidemen that were allowed to shine. Rory was more of a consumate performer as well. I saw them both front row center, in their primes. I love stevie ray, but if I could see one more show, it would be Rory hands down.
@jdesmo4 Stevie Ray was by far better, easily the greatest electric blues/rock guitar player of all time and the only guitar player that can trully be compared to Jimi Hendrix.
@tokiluv1 I guess we all have our favorites and I think Gary Moore is the best there ever has been so far,to bad he is no longer with us!!! There is many good guitarist and then there is the great ones, listen to empty rooms by Gary Moore !!

My opinion:
Jimi Hendrix = Greatest guitar genius ever, wrote so much in so little time. Couldn't imagine what the music industry would look like without him.
SRV = Best guitarist that ever lived, never will there be a better skilled guitarist that plays with that passion as he did.
Both gods in their own, I will always be thankful for their music.

The name of this video needs to be changed from "Greatest blues/rock guitarist ever" to "Greatest guitarist ever"
DerickLazell 5 months ago 3
I saw the name of this on the list and said to myself, if this isnt Stevie... then the title is misleading. Thank god it was Stevie.
DerickLazell 5 months ago
Why do the ones with such awe-inspiring talent have to leave so quickly? After all this time, this music is still timeless. May his memory be eternal.

Jimis version is so much sloppier. Stevies is by far more polished, precise, and crisp. No comparison

I think its faster than jimi's. Sorry I think Jimi's is better. BUT he is the best @ playing it other than jimi.

Good gitarplaying, but it doesn't add anything to the original.
Better put Hendrix in your player.
Gazeintospace 6 months ago
SRV is a straight Hendrix ripoff, I just think he's so damn over rated. Yeah he's fucking awesome at playing, but noway near the greatest. Rory Gallagher eats him for breakfast as a blues man
jimmyzo3o 6 months ago
@jimmyzo3o Haha, I have heard the whole 'each to their own' and so on, but really - I feel like I appreciate good guitar playing, not that satriani/vai masturbation bullshit, but seriously - Gallagher over SRV? Please. Admittedly, his version of voodoo child sucks, nothing less. But he is definitely a better guitarist than Hendrix and anyone else you care to mention, in terms of technique and just what he can do with his hands, the rest is a matter of opinion, but not the technique.
7th75thCallaghan 6 months ago
@7th75thCallaghan And just like you don't have a taste for Gallagher (fair enough), I don't have a taste for SRV. You may think I'm a joke for saying Rory is better than Srv, and I may think the same of you but vice versa. Gallagher does it all, better than most on acoustic and fucking amazing on the slide... then his electric is just outta this world. Not to mention he's a better singer, more of a snarl which is what blues is ain't it?
jimmyzo3o 6 months ago
@jimmyzo3o And to call him a 'straight Hendrix ripoff' shows that you don't understand the playing styles very well. I'm guessing you aren't a musician? Or at least not an experienced one. SRV has a beautiful percussive and dynamic style that Hendrix could never do, Hendrix used a shitton of FX pedals, SRV just uses natural overdrive boosted by a tube screamer, his control over the wood and metal of the guitar is far, far better.
7th75thCallaghan 6 months ago
@7th75thCallaghan I know what you're saying, technically he's one of the best there has been. It is my own opinion and not in any way a fact, it's hard to explain why I'm not a fan so I won't try. But put it like this; if I wanted to listen to this style of blues I'll just put on Hendrix... SRV, to me, just feels like a tribute act to Hendrix, it wouldn't bother me if I never heard him. It's also not really the style I play, I like the raw visceral bluesmen like Hubert Sumlin, Page, Gallagher...

Jorgeeeeeee12 7 months ago
@Jorgeeeeeee12

I love stevie ray, but if I could see one more show, it would be Rory hands down.
jdesmo4 8 months ago
@jdesmo4 Stevie Ray was by far better, easily the greatest electric blues/rock guitar player of all time and the only guitar player that can trully be compared to Jimi Hendrix.
