Tood bad they didn't put this together...but I see why not. This video dates from just before the MTA was created. This must have been an LACTC initiative.
ETBs are a good option as part of the mix.
They've been running in Dayton, Ohio since the 1950's, when they ripped out the rail based trolleys.
