I love you GARY WEBB!!! You are by far the hottest man on the planet and youre music is out of this world....the world is better off for having you in it, really! Some people suck the fun out of life......and some put pleasure back in it....thanks! There is no voice as cool as yours! You and youre voice are like MAGIC!!! LOVE YOU...mxxy!
as much as i love kfartwerk, i think its more of a novelty thing, gary found a way to merge it with everyday tunes. so if it hadnt been for numan, i doubt electro wouldve kicked off aswell as it did.
And they'd still be playing to themselves in garages if Numan hadn't produced something unique which dragged all these other bands into the then present. Those you mention had been around prior to Numans appearence but were stuck in obscurity with only a select following until AFTER Numan landed and raised the whole profile of electro music. Hence the 'godfather' title.
You are being too subjective and that is natural because you are apparently a huge fan of Numan. That's understandable. But that doesn't make your remarks valid.
Firstly, why would any artist/band be so interested to be stuck in obscurity? There are artists/bands that prefer to do things their own way (including Numan, himself). But some make it big, soon and some do not. Nobody can predict this. That doesn't make one artist's work to be superior or inferior to another artist's work.
ajittffcure you obviously have no idea. Although those 'bands' you mention were already about, none produced anything near to what Numan made in his Tubeway Army days. HL hadn't even discovered the synth sound till Numan appeared on the scene.
Please read books and watch documentaries. Basically do some level of research and find out whether there is an element of truth in what I said before you jump to any conclusion. For your kind information, The Human League started in 1977 and they were making rich, avant-garde, experimental music with purely analogue synthesisers. So it is actually laughable when you say that they didn't discover the synth sound till Numan appeared on the scene.
Though Gary Numan is a great artist, it's really an exaggeration or rather incorrect to call him "The Godfather of electro music". There were numerous artists/bands that made electro-rock/pop music much before him. Kraftwerk can arguably be called pioneers of electronic music because they didn't use any traditional instruments. Even in the UK, The Human League started much before Gary did and they were making interesting electronic records without relying on conventional instrumentation.
Thats why he has been branded as the godfather of electro, not the inventor.Gary had a unique sound (no where near kraftwerks early electronic sound)which caught everyones attention and really brought electronic music into the spotlight.Gary after all was mainly influenced by John Foxx's ultravox for their mix of keyboards and guitars.
You are right. Gary was influenced by John Foxx of Ultravox (one of his heroes). Agreed that Gary's music had a unique sound but then so did other acts around the same period or even before he burst into the scene. They all had their own special "synth" sounds. The only slight difference was that Gary became more popular than most of the other synth artists during that time (the late 1970s). That doesn't in anyway mean that he becomes a "Godfather" of electronic music.
Thats EXACTLY why he has become known as "The Godfather of electro music", there were lots of bands doing similar things BUT it was AFE that brought it forward into the masses

Here's the setlist from the boosh festival.I would hardly call it a nostalgic setlist as there is only three songs there from '79 (which at a festival he is expected to play). The rest are from 2000 onwards. In A Dark Place (Exclusive live version. Partly from Jagged Edge)
Rip (Exclusive live version. Part Pure, Part Hybrid)
gr8 interview gary numan shouldn't have been dissapointed with himself he put on an amazin performance one of my favourites - next to the boosh performance.
gary is super cute!

OMG what a brilliant idea!
Gary Numan has to be Vince's dad! That would be classic!
I don't care what anyone else thinks Gary Numan is amazing!
His music is enchanting and his voice is just the best!

AFE - 1979
Metal - 1979
Cars - 1979
even stuff like hybrid mix are over 5 years old now.
He's regularly said he wont do cars, afe etc. anymore as he doesnt want to keep doing the old stuff and be known as one of those 80's retro acts.
He's not quite that bad yet but he's close at times.
