it is/was a "ganglion" cyst. Not the same treatment as a sebaceous cyst with all the pus inside. Ganglions have thick liquid or "gel" as the person has described. There's a good chance it will come back if you have any trauma but otherwise it will be ok long-term.

I am sure that ganglion hurts or is a big nuisance at times. I remember when I had one on my hand in that same place it was just as big as that one and I couldn't help but play with it. I also remember people always asking me about it when they realised it. I am glad I got it removed by surgery in 96. Although I can feel a little piece of it deep within the joints (not visable) remaning due to the doctors telling me how deep the root of the ganglion was in the joint of my hand.
