What a superb lens but it's better with IS. If you can't afford IS then buy this one but get a tripod to avoid camera shake and only shoot with good light because you cannot "stop down" in poor light to open up the aperture. IS does not make the lens better, it is just a feature; that makes the 2.8 without IS a good buy but you need to know what you're doing.

Well, if you're going to be farther away than 3m use that. The focus speed is faster when it's at 3m, because it doesn't need to search through the whole focus range when it's seeking something to lock onto. There will be times when you need to go closer up, so just flip the switch then.

for sure, i've got this lens. its brilliant. i shot a wedding that started in the evening and finished late at night. while everyone else starts getting there flashes out, tripods, i shot the whole thing handheld with great results. very sweet lens
