  • i have the same problem but solid state drives are known for slow reading and writing esp. 8gb drives so i think thats why ?

  • My Old AMD system boots up faster than this..

from pressing power button to Complete loaded desktop takes 36 Seconds,

    AMD 3800+ 2.2Ghz,1GB DDR1,80GB Normal sata HDD,

  • i kept my mcafee did any one els do that too?

  • mate you could try this just done it with mine.

The SSD is very fast read, but has a slow write speed so when ever xp "writes" to it it slows down and seems to lag/freeze.

look for a free prog called "FLASHFIRE" it does wonders, my start up time has gone from 45 sec to 20 sec and it runs faster.

  • ive cured the moderate freezing problem with mine also made it run faster i upgraded my ram to 1.5 gb the most you can put in this laptop got the fastest sd card i could find which will store any pograms and the page file it ran worse when i just disabled the page file for some reason so i decided just to put a page file on the sd card now its running pretty quick but my web broser ran like shit so i made a ramdisk and had temporary files stored on that now everything is fast

  • another good thing about this is it lower the amount of write cycles your ssd has to do which means improved speed and less wear and the ramdisk used for the internet browzers temporary files gets erased every restart since its using ram as a harddrive making temporary files a lower risk for virus adware etc

  • my netbook is better than yours i have the acer aspire one d150

with 1gb of ram 160gb hdd and an intel atom n270 with 1.6ghz

    games work fine

i can play spore with little problems and gta sa works great

for the price it was probably the best computer i could get for $299.99

it can be upgraded to 2 gb of ram

i use it all the time

  • My XP boots in less than 10 seconds on my SSD but it freezes at random times for about 10 seconds. It's also slower access times and video rendering is a joke. I'm swtiching back.

  • I have a solid state Aspire one with dual boot, Ubuntu and XP, very pleased with it. I don't need much storage as I have servers etc at home. XP is prone to being sluggish at times but it is so handy as a small "shockproof" machine that I put up with it. I do have a few fast laptops with XP and Vista but find the Aspire one gets plenty of use.

  • the ssd versions take longer too boot but if u upgrade to the samsung ssd u'll see a big difference in speed but overall its a great netbook

  • why chose acer aspire laptop?

acer aspire is included acer empowering tehnoligy.

  • my hp xp boots faster than urs it boots in 14 secs

  • I like the nosie, the 120 hard drive is limp and makes not a sound, my 120gb drive hangs all the time. i wish I had the SSD, the only big dif is the size problem and the quicker SSD. But I would get around the size with the sd card slot for the speed any day. What is the diff with the 8Gb with Xp and Linux ?

  • a diff OS so some programs are faster and only work on the diff OSes

  • are you making this vid inside a tumble dryer or what?

  • Hahahhahahahahahhahah Great post!

  • Why dont they have disk drives ? and are they any good

  • because of the size there is not enough room to fit any knid cd drives but you can get an externa usbl cd/dvd drive

  • ya i have one and i have a cheap dvd drive and its prfect

  • i also bought the basic 1 for a good price only about 150 come with 1 gb ram 8 ssd and 8gb expansion card so about 16 gb total still low yea the frist thing ur gona say but for 150 free shipping only refurbish only meaning that it didnt pass the frist test am happy with mine tho window XP

  • how do you do his i am well into computers but i am no good with them can you get back to me as soon as possible please thank you

  • why is yours so noisy? my 160gb version doesnt make much noise at all

  • is that the fan in the background?

  • god the acer is noiser than my pc :s

  • I just installed XP on my 8gb one. Seems to work great so far. Makes it 100x more useful than linux.

  • i've changed the os of my 8gb aspire one linux to xp and it is not working well and i have to put it back again to linux just to be able to use it again...as for me, the 8gb version is not for xp....

  • my computer doesn't even have 1.5 gb of ram. it's a pos

  • Can I change the SSD memory or install a hard drive?

  • I believe you should be able to do both.

I personally dont have a need for more storage, or increased drive speed at this stage, so have not done this upgrade.

Try googling, as a few people have.

  • how can I disable the D2D and move or disable the pagefile location of the SSD?

  • "occasional freeze now and again"

    can you elaborate?

  • The system freezes and you can not do anything, and no system response.

Then it wakes up and off you go again.

  • that sounds very serious!

a few seconds meaning literally 2 second freezes? or are they longer?

  • No its just about 2 seconds. Its all to do with how the SSD memory currently works.

Read access is very fast, but in default windows configuration it likes to write to the drive alot, so it causes these mini hangs.

  • @securityactive SOLUTION : Just type in google 'FlashFire SSD', download the latest version, install it, restart, and thats it :) It will run amazingly fast now :) I dont know how it works if Im honest, it doesnt have a .exe file once installed, it just has a folder in Program files with a like 2 files, but you dont touch them :) just install and restart :) I think its an amazing app :) Trust me, if you disagree or dont belive me, feel free to reply with insults ... But honestly, get it and see

  • @securityactive That sounds like it's down to either the hard drive being excessively used because of the pagefile or or because of the drive being slow. I did try windows 2000 before but did the same.

  • @securityactive For good speed instal this:FlashFire,if you instal this ,not ever gonna freeze

  • Just convert the ntfs partition to fat32,

or install the windows again on fat32.

    SSD drives dont support ntfs.

  • you can see what kind of acer aspire I bought on my videos section in my account page

    certainly no freezing occuring!

  • What Bios you have, 3109 or 3114?

  • is this with the 1gb ram addeD?

  • Yes this is with 1.5GB Ram in Total.

  • The Aspire One can currently only handle a total of 1.5GB Memory, this is the 512Mb that is soldered to the board, and then a 1GB SO-DIMM module.

  • Install XP with D2D disabled in BIOS and use the FAT filesystem instead of NTFS, and also disable / move the pagefile location of the SSD.

  • is there any tweaking that i could do to make XP run faster on the SSD? i prefer SSD since im a little rough when using my laptops

  • The freezing is caused by the write speed to the SSD. I only installed this for testing purposes, so didnt put any effort into trying to stop the freezing. If you have a look on Aspire One forums you should find information on how to make XP more usable.

  • how did you deal with freezing with the Xp?...did u use a portable external hardrive?

  • Any problems at all in xp?? How would I do a dual boot?

  • I would say the 8GB SSD can run Windows XP, but it takes a fair bit of tweaking if you want to use it every day.

As for installing, I installed via a USB CD Drive, you can get them cheap.

As for using your Nano, I think this is something you would have to google, but personally I would buy a USB CD Drive.

  • Hi there, I have purchased one of these machines earlier today, with the Linux OS. I have been thinking about putting XP on it as I'm not at all familiar with Linux. Does the machine cope ok with XP running? Is there much of a difference in battery life? And how would I go about creating a XP install on an 4GB Nano as I don't have USB sticks bigger than 128mb.

  • If you cant see it in your bootup menu.

All I can suggest is you try another USB CD Drive, or try making an XP Install USB Stick.

  • i cant get mine to boot from my dvd-rw to install xp have you got any tips

  • This was formatted FAT32, XP SP3 with Acer Drivers.

  • did install using fat32: 36'' to boot, very fluid, great

  • I just bought an SSD one yesterday. I installed a "custom" XP bundled with lot of drivers at setup (and I own an extra XP licence), so I had not to worry about XP being able to recognize the video, sound, even wifi was up and ready.

I choosed to format as NTFS. Results are: XP boot in 16 seconds (no joke, I'm damn serious) The counterside is: YES, after boot, NTFS just freezes all the time. I hope if I install the same XP under fat32 I'll get everything fast. Tip: sould deactivate the SWAP!

  • can you send me the software please because linux is driving me crazy

  • I dont know if anyone asked yet... I know the linux version can use the left SSD Slot as an expansion (Kind of like JBOD RAID) can windows do the same? Just wanted to know... I have an eee 4g running xp mediacenter and have about 1.5gb left, so an 8gb acer wouldn't be a real problem space wise, just wondering... THX 4 any help.

  • This was formatted FAT32, XP SP3 with Acer Drivers.

  • If you plan to use Xp on the ssd disk you have to format it as fat32. Not ntfs. Ntfs freezes and is really slow on it...

I have full xp with sp3 installed on a fat32 file system and it is ready to use after 35 secounds of booting up.

  • I just used a USB cd drive... Worked great.

  • Yes I used the official XP Drivers, and had no issues with any of the devices.

As you can see in the video, boot time is just under 2 mins before it can be used. I think this is linked to XP using more resources, and SSD related issues.

  • did u use the official xp drivers from acer for this? how's the booting time? i read a lot of blogs that said...boot up with xp takes around 2 minutes?

  • This is the Linux version, I just created a slip stream version using NLite of Windows XP Pro SP3 and installed it using an external USB CD Drive, just to see how XP ran on the SSD.

Personally I bought this to run Linux on, so I have no problems with it, but I will probably change from the Linen OS to Ubuntu Remix once its released.

  • if i can remember, can you also install xp from another computer to another?
