E Recovery did not work & Alt + f10 did not work ether, to find Erecovery was not installed , Acer Aspire one aoa110 because it turned into a Brick useless.I erased the partition & installed Windows Xp Professional. then I went to Acers Website & downloaded all the Hard drives to a Disc form another computer , then Installed them, it gave me a bunch of issues of freezing up. ( Any Ideas ))))????????
ive cured the moderate freezing problem with mine also made it run faster i upgraded my ram to 1.5 gb the most you can put in this laptop got the fastest sd card i could find which will store any pograms and the page file it ran worse when i just disabled the page file for some reason so i decided just to put a page file on the sd card now its running pretty quick but my web broser ran like shit so i made a ramdisk and had temporary files stored on that now everything is fast
another good thing about this is it lower the amount of write cycles your ssd has to do which means improved speed and less wear and the ramdisk used for the internet browzers temporary files gets erased every restart since its using ram as a harddrive making temporary files a lower risk for virus adware etc
My XP boots in less than 10 seconds on my SSD but it freezes at random times for about 10 seconds. It's also slower access times and video rendering is a joke. I'm swtiching back.
I have a solid state Aspire one with dual boot, Ubuntu and XP, very pleased with it. I don't need much storage as I have servers etc at home. XP is prone to being sluggish at times but it is so handy as a small "shockproof" machine that I put up with it. I do have a few fast laptops with XP and Vista but find the Aspire one gets plenty of use.
I like the nosie, the 120 hard drive is limp and makes not a sound, my 120gb drive hangs all the time. i wish I had the SSD, the only big dif is the size problem and the quicker SSD. But I would get around the size with the sd card slot for the speed any day. What is the diff with the 8Gb with Xp and Linux ?
i also bought the basic 1 for a good price only about 150 come with 1 gb ram 8 ssd and 8gb expansion card so about 16 gb total still low yea the frist thing ur gona say but for 150 free shipping only refurbish only meaning that it didnt pass the frist test am happy with mine tho window XP
i've changed the os of my 8gb aspire one linux to xp and it is not working well and i have to put it back again to linux just to be able to use it again...as for me, the 8gb version is not for xp....
@securityactive SOLUTION : Just type in google 'FlashFire SSD', download the latest version, install it, restart, and thats it :) It will run amazingly fast now :) I dont know how it works if Im honest, it doesnt have a .exe file once installed, it just has a folder in Program files with a like 2 files, but you dont touch them :) just install and restart :) I think its an amazing app :) Trust me, if you disagree or dont belive me, feel free to reply with insults ... But honestly, get it and see
@securityactive That sounds like it's down to either the hard drive being excessively used because of the pagefile or or because of the drive being slow. I did try windows 2000 before but did the same.
The freezing is caused by the write speed to the SSD. I only installed this for testing purposes, so didnt put any effort into trying to stop the freezing. If you have a look on Aspire One forums you should find information on how to make XP more usable.
Hi there, I have purchased one of these machines earlier today, with the Linux OS. I have been thinking about putting XP on it as I'm not at all familiar with Linux. Does the machine cope ok with XP running? Is there much of a difference in battery life? And how would I go about creating a XP install on an 4GB Nano as I don't have USB sticks bigger than 128mb.
I just bought an SSD one yesterday. I installed a "custom" XP bundled with lot of drivers at setup (and I own an extra XP licence), so I had not to worry about XP being able to recognize the video, sound, even wifi was up and ready.
I choosed to format as NTFS. Results are: XP boot in 16 seconds (no joke, I'm damn serious) The counterside is: YES, after boot, NTFS just freezes all the time. I hope if I install the same XP under fat32 I'll get everything fast. Tip: sould deactivate the SWAP!
I dont know if anyone asked yet... I know the linux version can use the left SSD Slot as an expansion (Kind of like JBOD RAID) can windows do the same? Just wanted to know... I have an eee 4g running xp mediacenter and have about 1.5gb left, so an 8gb acer wouldn't be a real problem space wise, just wondering... THX 4 any help.
Yes I used the official XP Drivers, and had no issues with any of the devices.
As you can see in the video, boot time is just under 2 mins before it can be used. I think this is linked to XP using more resources, and SSD related issues.
did u use the official xp drivers from acer for this? how's the booting time? i read a lot of blogs that said...boot up with xp takes around 2 minutes?
This is the Linux version, I just created a slip stream version using NLite of Windows XP Pro SP3 and installed it using an external USB CD Drive, just to see how XP ran on the SSD.
Personally I bought this to run Linux on, so I have no problems with it, but I will probably change from the Linen OS to Ubuntu Remix once its released.
i have the same problem but solid state drives are known for slow reading and writing esp. 8gb drives so i think thats why ?

mate you could try this just done it with mine.
The SSD is very fast read, but has a slow write speed so when ever xp "writes" to it it slows down and seems to lag/freeze.
look for a free prog called "FLASHFIRE" it does wonders, my start up time has gone from 45 sec to 20 sec and it runs faster.

Can I change the SSD memory or install a hard drive?
lifeinlugo 3 years ago
I believe you should be able to do both.
I personally dont have a need for more storage, or increased drive speed at this stage, so have not done this upgrade.
Try googling, as a few people have.

how can I disable the D2D and move or disable the pagefile location of the SSD?
pokolclans 3 years ago
"occasional freeze now and again"
can you elaborate?
gonepishing 3 years ago
The system freezes and you can not do anything, and no system response.
Then it wakes up and off you go again.
securityactive 3 years ago
that sounds very serious!
a few seconds meaning literally 2 second freezes? or are they longer?
gonepishing 3 years ago
No its just about 2 seconds. Its all to do with how the SSD memory currently works.
Read access is very fast, but in default windows configuration it likes to write to the drive alot, so it causes these mini hangs.

Just convert the ntfs partition to fat32,
or install the windows again on fat32.
SSD drives dont support ntfs.

Yes this is with 1.5GB Ram in Total.

The Aspire One can currently only handle a total of 1.5GB Memory, this is the 512Mb that is soldered to the board, and then a 1GB SO-DIMM module.

can the RAM on the acer aspire one with Linpus and 8gb ssd memory be expanded to 1.5gb?

Install XP with D2D disabled in BIOS and use the FAT filesystem instead of NTFS, and also disable / move the pagefile location of the SSD.

s0nic6999 3 years ago
I would say the 8GB SSD can run Windows XP, but it takes a fair bit of tweaking if you want to use it every day.
As for installing, I installed via a USB CD Drive, you can get them cheap.
As for using your Nano, I think this is something you would have to google, but personally I would buy a USB CD Drive.

If you cant see it in your bootup menu.
All I can suggest is you try another USB CD Drive, or try making an XP Install USB Stick.

If you plan to use Xp on the ssd disk you have to format it as fat32. Not ntfs. Ntfs freezes and is really slow on it...
I have full xp with sp3 installed on a fat32 file system and it is ready to use after 35 secounds of booting up.
