I think, Sungha Yungs guitar cover sounds much better, though it it's not the original. But the 3rd man theme proved that also in middle europe (Germany&Austra) skillfulm jazz music exists.
singinjonny same with me one of earliest tunes i can remember, oh this and Never On A Sunday funny how some tunes stay with you your whole life.......nice realy makes me smile, don't know why these tunes just make me smile.....but they do x
As an avid fan of the film, which I can happily watch over and over again, it is great to stumble on this recording by Anton in later years. I do think, though, if compared with the original recordings for the film, it does lack a little of it's original zest. Just an observation, not a critisism, Anton was that much older in 1982 when you consider that he did the original recordings back in the early 1950's, when the film was made.
He obviously still had it in 1982. The best rendition i have heard so far and such amazing skill. A lovely piece to listen to. Also a very young Orson Wells in the video. It brings back childhood memories.
It is taken out of the broadcast of "Verstehen Sie Spaß?", a kind of ´hidden- camera-comedy-celebrity´- show that was introduced in germany in the early 80s. Given that one could only receive 2-4 TV-Programs it became a famous Saturday´s Eve-Show. Conferenciers were Paola and Kurt Felix from switzerland.
Can anyone tell me which key this wonderful theme is played in? I think it's G major, but I might be mistaken; and does the key not change perhaps half way through? I dearly wish the old man was still alive, God Bless him!
"The Third Man" always was my favorite movie too, an amazing example of luck and competence clicking together, creating a gem. The war rubble still there, masterfully utilized and photographed, the perfect cast, the Graham Greene plot and Anton Karas´ magic zither, just stumbled upon at the beginning of filming.
@RudySunseeker - You are saying in this post everything I am thinking, lol. Many thanks. It'd have been wonderful to see Anton Karas in person. At least we can appreciate the recordings left us. It couldn't have been done 100 yrs ago from the 1940's. We are lucky!
Excellent - thanks for posting this. Watched the movie again recently and was struck by its sheer quality, excellent plot and memorable scenes, especially Harry Lime's first appearance. A real classic of British film noir.
The zither adds so much to the picture - it's exotic and odd-sounding, Eastern European, but somehow it comments on and highlights the action.
A musical masterpiece? 100,000 British ice cream vans can't be wrong!
The original recording of the ''Third Man Theme'' by Anton Karas hit no. 1 on the charts the fourth week in April 1950 -- and remained in first place for eleven consecutive weeks.
Its name was "Pussycat Willum" (during filming he was known as "kitten Willem) and his talent was spotted very early on. He went on to appear in many films, and was an inspirational character in early British TV. He is most famously known for starring in many childrens TV series, most famously with Muriel Young, Olly Beak and Fred Barker. Sadly for Willum, Olly and Freds star rose, at the same time as Willums faded. He retired destitute and broke at the grand old age of 16, in 1965. Honest.
@0AZ909 - I found this in your favorites, mercí beauCOUP !!!!! And thanks to Markus for uploading this. I am amazed at how this sound is so similar to the guitars of Los Indios Tabajaras!
Never saw the movie but I've been hearing this tune on the radio for years, finally looked it up and found out what it was called. Love it! Very catchy, this man was very talented and a master of the zither!
Played various stringed instruments but never tried a zither - it looks impossibly difficult. I love this stuff. The movie would not have been much cop without this haunting sound.
a surberb move made more excellent w Anton Karas zither musical accompanying ..Understood the director, Carol Reed heard Mr. Karas playing at a party and immedtaly knew the sound of the zither would improve the picture. He was right. The Third Man Theme was a top selling record at the time.
Heard the Harry Lime theme for the first time again in many years when I went shopping - brought back memories of one of the most brilliant movies I'd ever seen - The Third Man. Wish DSTV would give it a re-run for old times' sake - I absolutely love this piece of music dating back to my schooldays back in the late 40's!!!
This movie was made complete by the haunting soundtrack (a classic) saw it as a child, will never forget it.

Never saw the movie but I've been hearing this tune on the radio for years, finally looked it up and found out what it was called. Love it! Very catchy, this man was very talented and a master of the zither!

Yes, it truly was a great movie that was made even greater with including Anton Kara's music! Wonderful!

Sorry, 33 years since the file. Aage takes it's toll on the arithmetic!

I found this by accident - just beautiful!

Wunderbar! It was 43 years since the film (The Third Man) Karas composed the music and it was played much faster for the film.
Sadly age (of both composer/musician and the instrument takes its toll.
But, still lovely to listen to.

@dropdeadwolfi
HaasiAustria 2 years ago 2
Wallmersbacher 1 year ago
