Every time I hear this song, I cry a bit. There is just so much beauty to it, kind of like all of the love and happiness in the world in 4 minutes and 8 seconds.
This coming from someone who laughs at horror movies and scowls at chick flicks. That's just how amazing George Harrison is (I avoid using the word 'was' because music lives forever).
George Harrison was a devout Hare Krishna until the end, he called himself an "Under Cover Devote" and that is what he replaced his drug use with. He sings a lot about it in many of his songs, especially , My Sweet Lord.
I have included your video for explanations at harigeorgeson [dot] com - the best of George and the Beatles you might haven't known yet....
Ich habe Dein Video zur Erläuterung auf harigeorgeson [dot] com verwendet - das Beste von George und den Beatles, das ihr vielleicht noch nicht kennt...
The orchestral part of this song is just so uplifting. It could have a different tune altogether. It's like a brilliant piece of music, split into two separate strands.
In her autobigraphy, Ronnie Spector says that when she first heard George Harrison play this song for her, she thought it was terrible. She goes on to say that after hearing her finished recording that "The record stunk". She asked Harrison about a particular line in the song, saying that she didn't understand it. George replied "I don't either". Ronnie was right. It stinks.
THIS is the best version! George's voice is perfect, his SOUL is in this song - it's HIM. He was SO spiritual and beautiful and it flowed through his music. Bowie's version is good, but not even close to this. And Ronnie Spector's version just does not work (I dont' think she understood it). George will live forever in his beautiful beautiful music!!
"Ringo" fans.... In honor of Ringo's 70th, I hope U will check out my "RINGO"video. It's very retro with Beatleish touches & was done as a labor of love and with the utmost respect for the Fabs. My attempt at putting a little bit of the Beatle spirit out there for Beatle fans. It's also my tribute to George Harrison's slide playing as well as Ringo's unique style.
@stampede331 whoa, whoa. Was not making that claim. Something, Here Comes the Sun, While my Guitar Gently Weeps, Old Brown Shoe and Long, Long, Long are incredible songs and at least three of them could be argued into the top 5 list of greatest Beatles songs. Toward the end, George was outdoing John and Paul in a way that is somehow never discussed - and considering The Beatles are the most storied band ever, this is strange. And this comes from a giant Paul fan and a pretty large John fan.
Definitely, his music will be forever. This is my favorite album. i don't understand why this song wasn't played more on the radio. I heard it once at 2am in Mexico city in 1975, then in L.A. on KMET when they used to play whole albums.
I do think Ronnie Spector's version was better. George's voice-and I love him-but it was a poor fit here; he really strained to hit the high notes. George originally wrote it for her.
Ronnie Spector and Bowie sing this a whole lot better, but I can hear emotion in George's voice, where I cannot in the other two...although still good.
i first heard the david bowie cover of this. it blew my mind. then i learned it was by george harrison originally and just had to find it. its wonderful

Have to agree with you. George was a songwriter par excellence . Although his songs were beautiful, I think you have to have studied music to realise his true genius.
When I was young, I loved Harrison's guitar playing and his songs. I subsequently studied guitar and music theory. I still love George's playing and compositions, but with a greater appreciation for what he did technically. So, I'll second your vote and attest to it from personal experience.
i study music & i think he's a genius, but i think it's just coincidence. though i don't know i didn't start really listening to good stuff like the beatles & bob dylan until my sophomore year of college.. so maybe it's not coincidence. i dunno...
