Maybe - I think it needs more sections instead of repeating the same licks over and over. Been meaning to make some new vids - wouldn't mind revisiting this - it's one of the first ones I ever put up here. Thanks for the comment!
Thanks, I used to listen to him a lot. There's some great videos of him on here - the first video I favorited on youtube was Mean Town Blues from Woodstock
I can't really write tab - I can barely read it -thanks for the comment, though. It would probably be easier for me to make a video explaining how to play this - maybe I'll do that when I get the video gear set back up.
Wow - well it certainly seems a lovely sound and even moreso given that it is being recorded through a microphone (rather than a direct line from the guitar) - Nice one buddy!! I like it!! You are going to inspire me to get mine in open D too!
"NICE! It's so hard to get the intonation right with a slide. It pisses me off. " Keep at it your ear will tell you when you have it. Have confidence in your ability to appreciate fine music. Once you get that all your playing will improve.
Excellent video showing the great sound in open D. I love this tuning, you can do just about any style of music, celtic, folk, country and of course blues. Take care my friend! Mark
Hi there, I really really like this style of playing. Ive been playing guitar for about 4 years, but have no idea how to start learning slide guitar. Ive got the bottle neck and all... but I dont really know where to start?
Could you perhaps point me in the right direction? Any scales I should know if im playing in open D with a bottle neck?
I've only got a limited number of slide licks, mostly off the blues scale. I would say, just know where the "good" notes are, use your fingers instead of a pick, make sure you put the slide right over the fret for perfect intonation, and pull-offs from a slide/fretted note to the open string always sound pretty good, even if you're pulling off the the 12th fret.
Some key frets to play chords with the slide across all the strings for this tuning are the third fret, which is an "F" chord, the fifth, which is a "G" (the "IV" in the blues I-IV-V progression), the seventh fret is an "A" (the V of the I-IV-V, the tenth (is a "C" chord) and then the 12th is another "D" chord an octave up. So notes in any one of those frets are pretty much gonna fit.
hello...,. been learning trying to learn slide lately... this is a video i quite enjoy... it's got lots of movement...~!
one question: this open D tuning... is the third string on F or F#?... i'm almost sure it's F# but there's some sections i can't quite play if it isn't on F... can you clarify>??....
Sure - it is F# because that is the the third note of a d major chord. If you tune it to F, you have a d minor chord - which may produce some intersting sounds also!
Hi Again When you are going to be looking to maybe purchase a reso, buy yourself a Republic Guitar ( if in Europe the same guitar would be a Busker ), check both these guitars out on their websites. I have a Busker Tricone and this guitar is absolutely wonderful, it just blows the other entry level reso's away, don't even consider them. I think what would suit you would the Style O 14 fretter, neck similar to your Takemine and gives you a chance to use a capo if you want.
I Loved It, nice slide playing, whats that your playing on it looks like a Martin. Have you ever considered ( I am assuming you have not got one already) playing your type of slide on a resonator, I can assure you it would sound fantastic
That's a Takamine - but it is known as the lawsuit model because it is so close to the Martin it is copying. I would love to try a resonator someday - definitely on my wish list!
Not sure - I'm not too good at writing tab. I think tabbing slide would be particularly difficult. But, half the battle is just tuning it to DADF#AD . Once you have that, you get lots of great chords just by laying the slide over the frets (the third, fifth, 10th, and 12th frets are good for this tuning. And you can do pull offs from any of those frets and it will work because you are pulling off to the notes in a D chord.
oh nice- i didnt see, but your playing the 12 bar blues. I can probably pick it out from there. Hehe, your right, the tuning is the hard part. Take care.
i actually laughed out loud at the fact you put "(the "wiggles" model)" as if it were an actual instrument. i still like seasick steve's mississippi drum machine idea best.
that was awesome - nice sound with the overdubbed bass aswell.
Well, the guy in the Wiggles does play a tiny drumset! You can't see it in this video but you can see it in my "Rockabilly Guitar Licks" or "Walk Don't Run" videos. What's this seasick Steve thing? I'm gonna search for it.
If you want to hear some good picking, Search youtube for a video of David Lee Roth playing acoustic guitar on his radio show - (it's actually a photo slideshow). He is amazing! I guess when you've got Eddie Van Halen in the band you don't get a chance to show off much, though.
I can't write tab (or read it). THere are a few instructional vids on here that are about playing slide. But I will say this - if you tune your guitar DADF#AD (low to high) then put a slide on your fretting hand and place it directly over the fret wire for the 3rd, 5th, 10th or 12th frets you'll get some good sounding chords. (continued...)
Maybe - I think it needs more sections instead of repeating the same licks over and over. Been meaning to make some new vids - wouldn't mind revisiting this - it's one of the first ones I ever put up here. Thanks for the comment!

Nice stuff - really good! What 'conversion' was necessary to get that guitar to accept slide playing - did you raise the strings?
daveythelad 3 years ago
no - the acions actually to low for slide - you can hear the slide hitting the frets. It's the only acoustic I have, though!
