Also, when you crack it, you crack the opposite end of the egg white. The whole egg is edible and really really good.

I applaud you for trying this. I'm not Filipino, but I was raised by a Filipino woman, and it's part of the cultural food. It really does taste like chicken noodle soup (without all that salt) and liver, with boiled egg. The only way I can handle it, is with salt and vinegar. Try not to look at it... just bite down, look up at the sky, chew it quickly and swallow. You did AWESOME! Go Molly! :)

Sip the juice inside, separate the hard part which is the white section, then, sprinkle some salt and put the rest in your mouth. That is the way to eat balut. But it is damn good... let me tell you people.

I'm Filipino and I have eaten balut just a couple of times in my life. The duck part looks horrible but the yolk and juice are yummmmmmy! My friends love this stuff and the trick to eating the duckling part is to NOT LOOK at it. Just slurp it up and chew!

i tasted balut once and it diddnt taste like liver its like a jello with an awfull texture and smell... she should have eaten the yolk cause the yolk is the best part of it... and its a good thing she diddnt eat the white part cuase people dont usually eat that... they say you would get a digestive thing...

Wow...I was born & raised in the Philippines but I haven't tried balut. Maybe because my mom scared the crap out of me when I was little by taking the chick out of the egg & performing a tap dance on the table like a puppet. Then suddenly pops the chick in her mouth. Watching you slowly eating the chick brought back those memories!!! Good for you though!

That is not bad. When i was over in the philippines my fiance served me dog, at least the meat tasted really really wierd. I heard a dog the night before and the next day I didnt. I asked where the dog was. They didnt answer. LOL

OK, but you know, NOT EVERY Filipino eats balut or likes eating it. We have other food items which are much better tasting and more "normal" for everyone's taste. Taste our "adobo" chicken or pork, or "pancit" noodles, "laing" spicy vegetable or "kare kare" oxtail stew. It is hard to prepare balut and even harder to eat it.
