Baen books has almost all their books available on their website. Web versions of their books come on a cd with many of their hardbacks.
They have a statement on their site that says basically everything you've said here; that people may download all their books and never pay a penny but people are likey to buy after they've tried, and if they don't chances are a friend of their's will and in this way their content advertises itself.
They haven't gone bust so they must be doing something right.
@lazyperfectionist1 Exactly. And all that such pathetic attempts at legislation will provide is impetus to move QUICKER in a direction that they would most certainly abhor.
The MPAA and RIAA want us stuck going to theaters, playing DVDs and CDs that self destruct after a period of time (remember the physical disc technology called "Divx"?) and playable only on sealed players with no PC connections using something like HDCP over HDMI connections to the speakers and generating a (hopefully) inadible signal that analog recorders refuse to record.. That's the dream.
A lot of us Americans say "I'm going to run away to Canada" every time a stupid law passes for us without our consent. I guess this time that's out of the question...
I watched NDP's Andrew Cash who is a Member of Parliament talk about bill-c11. He mentioned digital locks and how that would affect fair use. For news agencies and educators. Or poor grandma innocently downloading a few songs and getting in trouble.
@kurtilein3 not the most popular suggestion with some of today's record label produced "artists" who wouldn't recognise a musical instrument if they tripped over it and who stretch autotune to the limits of what is technologically possible
Ive seen so many bands for free, or for about 15 euros, and every now and then (more often than not) i see a singer with perfect pitch and a perfect voice. Search for the cranberries live, muse live, r.e.m. live. And then there are the DJs/composers, apart from bands, they make the music. Peter Kruder - Marakesh. Phillip Glass/ aphex twin - Icct Hedral (its an orchestra). Yann Tiersen (live aux eurock) - Rue de cascades.
Oh wow, somebody finally looks at the world from a conceptual standpoint. I haven't been arguing that for a fucking millennia. Religion is philosophy. E.g. the golden rule was presented by many religious leaders including Jesus and Confucius.
Excellent Points! The ones that require at least good intentions, which are rare. People like you should be involved in the lawmaking, not these clowns. But when people of some quality enter government, they suffer many accidents.... or so I hear :P
up to @0:50 -- Yep. Excellent. Indisputable. Were we not in so many chains from these fuckers we'd have the time to attend as many live performances as we could stand. It's what is /INEVITABLE/ with proper, common law qualified, natural law qualified reasoning. Chains = bad. THINK! It's a /universal/. Very probably, anyway. Thinking quantum mechanically -- at this 'depth' the 'magic' of appearing and disappearing material is not 'usual' ... but also not even /improbable/ ... within an infinity.
@rozeboosje 'cheers' Pleasure. And all because the lady loves Milky Way and all the absurd rest, perhaps. Perhaps also a deep fascination with the weird maths of probability and infinity. It now seems highly improbable that even if we hadn't bumped together on the issue of net neutarality we wouldn't still be having this type of conversation. Fascinating, isn't it?
Gorilla199 has indulged in creative solutions to copyright issues. Good vid, thank you Rozey.. I just watched a vid on ACTA, it's clear I need to do some research on this, thanks for reminding me about the basic premis that the industry is trying to 'restructure' into guilty until proven innocent.
It's a shame they ever came up with a word for conspiracy. Without it, people would find it a little harder to mock someone for pointing it out when there are "two or more people working together to achieve a goal".
@rozeboosje 'quite' ... using deception and draconian, impossibe and impossibly expensive 'law' to force this shit on us at, untimately, our labour to pay for it. WHAT A DISGUSTING GANG OF CRIMINAL MOBSTERS THEY TRULY ARE. Would /YOU/ vote for your own subservience to your moral and intellectual inferiors? FUCK THEM and all the blood and gore they pour upon the world in their sick addiction-driven pursuits, from ego trips to stark-raving self-destruction. They NEED stopping!!
Damn I'm so glad that even the conservatives reject the idea of SOPA in Germany. There were a total of two (2) representatives of parliament who voiced approval.
@blackwolf1200 Yeah but then again German copyright law already *is* draconian to the point of ridiculousness. If I understand correctly, you don't even have a provision for "fair use" in your legislation?
@rozeboosje Yeah. But there's a concept of "editorial freedom". No court will summon you for using someone else's material in a responsible manner for commentary or parody. Proper attribution is required, and then we have the GEMA which has the blanket right to have access to music videos blocked on behalf of "all artists and copyright holders". They collect a fee for any publically accessibe and sold piece or live performance. There's even a fee included when you buy blank CDs or DVDs.

This is also crazy given how much more quickly technical innovators move than legislative innovators.

The speak in the bill is too broad.

Also this bill benefits the record label or other more than the actual artist.

Yeah, but touring is so much harder than smoking weed in a studio while a producer and an engineer make your music sound good. LOL
