This might not be your usual kind of music, but you wrote this very masterfully. Its technical but not so technical as to outshine the rest of the track. Good job.
Travis, while I'm sure you're perfectly satisfied with your set-up (and are far more knowledgeable than me), is there any reason you mount your china off of a separate stand entirely, instead of a boom arm + clamp off of another stand? I notice you're always moving it back in place, etc.
@Steve128967 If it was on a clamp+holder the clamp would just inch back every hit or so; trust me, I've tried. The stand is sturdier. I don't always bother putting things in front of the stand or duct-taping it down (as I do at my home studio) because it doesn't take me long to track.
0:09 - 0:12 and 1:01 - 1:04 and 2:05 - 2:08 - crashes complement melodically the guitar accents. (HighP - HighP - LowP)
1:40 - 1:50 - double bass long run (instead of following the rythm guitar) with toms and cymbals
0:35 - 0:47 - double bass follow guitar riff and the brief fills-in complements vocals. The 13 hats is also used for energy.
It's also interesting to note how the drums complement guitar during chorus with accents on china/snare + brief linear fill-in with toms here and there.
I don't think he's worried about having multiple "takes". He's recording drum tracks for bands that are hiring him to write and record a drum part, which will more than likely represent their band on an album. Under those circumstances, what sense does it make to worry about having multiple takes?
@thebeat42 Shit, like a jackass I didn't pay attention to the snare in the video and assumed he was using his Reference. According to his website, since that one is black, that would be his 7x14 Stainless Stell, though it does not list a brand with that snare.
I think this snare sound is one of the best ive heard in all of your videos, and i dont see a problem with the fact he puts multiple takes together, to get a perfect take is a very difficult thing to achieve and in reality most things nowadays are chopped up and put together
I really like the sound of this track as well, great stuff travis!
when it comes to sessions such as this one where you had to compose parts in the studio, do you make a short hand chart just to get through the song form? also how many times do you normally listen to a song in this instance?
@Drumrrr4life I did that for the first Gruhin session, TCSN and some others but for this tune I mapped out every hit. After I finished in Guitar Pro I exported the chart, 'squashed' the bar lines together manually with MS Paint (woo-hoo!) and read the chart on a computer while tracking (it's out of the frame).
@shaftninja would you consider recording a video just about your snare drum? i'd be interested in knowing anything and everything about it... best sound i've ever heard
normally i don't like pop/punk too much but this chick's voice is too good to pass. anyways i've got a name for all the crazy orbin fans: suborbinates. what do you think? hahahaha.
Hey Travis ! One more time excellent drumming ! But why don't you block you chinese stand so it can't move anymore ? It must be stressful to see it moving away when you're playing
@Andrexthor But don't you think bands who play more technical stuff would hire him more? I think his potential stands out alot more in that kind of songs
@1S0AR My guess is that if a musician is making a living off music, then s/he cannot be too picky all the time. Also, he probably likes this music too, must super musicians I know are quite open minded to many genres, versatility keeps you relevant in the industry. Besides, are you saying that just because a song is not very technical it doesn't deserve to be Orbinated? personally I'd love for more mainstream music to have this kind of quality drumming.
@Andrexthor That's not my point. What I ment is I was surprised there wasn't any more technical bands that asked for his help since that's where he can show off more.
Hey great work, thank you for taking the time to upload your session videos onto youtube, they're so cool to watch. Also, can you tell me the reason for covering your bass drum with a blanket? I always thought it was an amateur way of muffling it, but obviously if you're doing it, theres probably a better reason than that.
@shaftninja if you have two or more identical hard drives you can use RAID 1.
RAID 1 means that it saves the same files on the 2 or more drives you have in RAID 1 so if one of the drives fail you still have the files on the other drives so you wont loose any data :)
@shaftninja raid 1 is where you get 2 hard drives that copy every single file to each other... so if you do something on one hard drive it gets written to the second hard drive exactly the same.
@shaftninja Much easier than messing with networking luckily, you just run 2 of the same hard drive in unison, although it shows as one drive in your operating system. It writes to both drives simultaneously, so if one goes, you've got a real time backup.
If you've got some extra cash, you should aim for flash/SSD storage, if for the 10x speed increase alone
@shaftninja Yeah, you have two (or more) identical hard drives (or solid state drives, which are much faster and reliable, it would be redundant to RAID 1 those) and they save the same information on them :) look at digitalstormonline(dot)com if you need a good system, they're my personal favorite
It's not backed up to a server. A simple way of thinking how RAID can act is lets say you have a one terabyte hard drive, with RAID you could have two hard drives in the computer and they would be mirror copies of each other so if one fails you still have all the data. It can get more technical and complicated than this, but a simple way to have your hard drive backing itself up without having to manually do it. Sorry if that's confusing
@shaftninja Nah, RAID 1 mirrors your drives so that if one fails the other maintains a copy of the original that is fully functional. Just some extra protection from hard drive failures; especially when you're uploading to a cloud drive constantly.
