There is no trust in our politics anymore, nor trust in our army. We don't preemptively strike anyone we can (we being the US). Just the people we feel threatened by, like scotch scotch said, that is the heart of the issue.
Al, its a good question IF you really want an answer. It goes to the heart of the debate. Another way to put it is "What threat does radical militant Islam pose to the US?" In my opinion the answer involves the number of radical Islamists and the resources available to them. Give them Iraq and they will have the means to influence if not dominate half of the world.
Politics tend to influence public moral acceptance. The majority of the US public accepted the invasion of Iraq as a counter-strike after 9/11. It took time for those people to become impatient about the current conflict.
Consider that the same option with the Iraq Conflict could very well be applied to the Sudan, as a majority of people would CURRENTLY accept action against the genocide of Darfur.

It'll take the same influencing to persuade the public vote in 2008, as they're keeping this conflict alive to influence our decisions.
