My bad about the Daily Worker - it may have been other prominent socialist newspapers of the time. However selctions of these reviews do appear in the anthology Celluloid Power Edited by David Pratt - a collection of leftist film reviews from that era.
Birth of a Nation was widely panned by the film critics in the Daily Worker and several socialist organizations. Read a book called Celluloid Power that reprints many of the negative reviews Birth of a Nation received when it was first released. I love Lennig's books about Bela Lugosi but I disagree with him here. I do agree with his comments about President Wilson here, however.
Hi - I'm setting up a You Tube site for Arthur to answer his fans and critics. If I recall the Daily Worker didn't start up until the 1920's. Maybe 1924. I will have to check. The birth was in 1915. If anything you will learn....more people talked about the picture then fought over it. It opened white americas eyes. At the same time the damage books say it caused did not happen. Well thats why its time to clear this mans name. Thanks...Ira Gallen
Not that any typically hysterical, blustering Black racists would ever believe or admit Lennig here.
