Excalibur was the sword given to Arthur after the sword in the stone broke in a single combat with an unknown knight, after this battle Arthur came upon the lake of Avalon and in the center of said lake was a human hand holding a sword just above the water. This was Excalibur, being held by the lady of the lake, who then gave Excalibur to Arthur as a trade, she does not specify what he would trade back to her until the time of his journey into Avalon, where he would live forever.
this is not true... The legend of King Arthur tells that he received Excalibur much later after he became king... the sword that he pulled off from the stone was he's first sword and this sword was broken, that's why he received Excalibur...
@Protojoe912 Not confirmed that it is the real sword, but they believe they found it in Ledgend Quest. But who knows, might still be in the lake or something.
@Protojoe912 That was what was relayed in the movie. At the end before Arthur died Percival tossed Excalibur into the lake and the lady of the lake took it home (where ever that is). So is that just Hollywood or is that what was stated in the legend? This could be the sword. Who knows?
according some of internet research I've done the historical King Arthur was not a king but a warlord who was at the head of an alliance of many british kings
I have seen a lot of different versions about this legend. The last one is MERLIN the tv series. Where can I read the original one. I think the sword in the stone has also a name, and almost like Excalibur. Someone knows it? I think both swords are importan to the legend. Without the first one Arthur wont become a King, and Excalibur is just magic (what did it did?). I mean I do not know, that is why I would like to read the original story. What do you people thing about MERLIN tv?
idk bout the legends but it seems xcalibur was real but its powers are widely exagerrated, the power to break any sword was because it was made by using a new forging method and new ores
They're actually one and the same. In the 12th/13th c. Vulgate cycle Excalibur is drawn from the stone by Arthur not once, but at every High Feast from New Year until Pentecost, to prove to his Barons that he is the true King. In the later Post Vulgate cycle, Excalibur is broken in a fight with Pellinor and declared to be not the true Excalibur, as it broke. Merlin and Arthur then row to the middle of lake where the Lady of the Lake gives him Ecalibur on condition that he grant her a boon.
Excalibur is NOT the sword in the stone! That's a big misbelief based on the movie "Excalibur" from 1981. Since that movie Excalibur and the sword in the stone are said to be the same weapon, -but they are separate!
actually, there are two parallel legends. In one version arthur draws it from the stone, in another merlin receives it from the lady of the lake. The movie Excalibur 1981 decided to merge the two legends into one, where King Arthurs father, Uther gets it from Merlin, having got it from the Lady of the lake, and plunges it into the stone to safeguard it from enemies. Some years later, Uthers son, Arthur, draws the sword from the stone, proving his unchallengable right to be King.

There are many books about the legend, but all serious sources are at one about the fact that the celtic word "Caledvwlch" (which means "hard embrasure") is the eponym for appelations like "Excalibur", "Caliburn" or ""Caliburnus". They all have the same accemptation. The sword in the stone is known as "ex Saxo".
If you want to know more, then I would advise you to read books like the "Historia Brittonum" and the "Historia Regum Britanniae". But I warn you: they are huge tome. ;-)
@23aztek HUGE TOMES, oops. Let's see what I can do. What about Merlin the new tv series. what do you think about it. Or the movie ARTHUR. Thanks for you answers.
@23aztek Old comment but still more correct than this video. The sword in the stone, Caliburn was the sword of rightful ruler of Britain. Caliburn was broken by Arthur and is forever gone. Excalibur is the sword that cuts steel, given to Arthur by the lady of the lake. They're looking in the wrong setting, noobs.
@23aztek i believe it was caliburn, that was in the stone and scabbered was it seath, if i know the legend... but i dont know it that well and excalibur was a diferant sword
"Caliburn" is just another name for "Excalibur", just like "Caledfwlch" or "Caliburnus" . The sword in the stone is called "ex Saxo" or "ex Saxone". Excalibur was not the sword in the stone. It was the sword which was given to Arthur by the Lady of the Lake sometime after he began to reign. She calls the sword "Excalibur, that is as to say as Cut-steel.
