  • just run to a shop and buy 4 gallons of water :)

  • @ViciRastaBoy The bomb has proximity cirucit. One run and the bomb goes off :(

  • I'm 22 don't worry you aren't a pedo :P as far as we know.... educating your children is always a good idea. granted I learned a lot of cool things during these times but mostly I was annoyed that my mother was interrupting the movie

  • Why not do it like this:

    1) poor 3 gallons from the 5 gallon jug into the 3 gallon jug, leaving 2 gallons in the 5 gallon jug.

    2) empty the 3 gallon jug and poor the 2 gallons from the 5 gallon jug into the 3 gallon jug.

    3) mark the outside of the 3 gallon jug where the water surface is

    4) poor the 2 gallons from the 3 gallon jug into the 5 gallon jug

    5) Fill the 3 gallon jug to the 2 gallon marking

    6) add the 2 gallons from the 3 gallon jug to the 2 gallons already in the 5 gallon jug.

  • i watched dis is mi skool...its kinda cool

  • i figured both ways 1st time i saw movie i paused movie and showed it to wife and kids real quick

  • @WOLFMANoct1963 factoid: they just wanted to watch the movie. :P

  • @InFlameProductions what are you talking about who just wanted to watch the movie i paused it because they where getting a snack and going to the restroom. i don't understand your comment.

  • @WOLFMANoct1963 my mother is constantly pausing movies to explain stuff that I don't really care about, in annoyingly minute detail. I usually just want to watch the movie.

  • @InFlameProductions well i will admit i'm sometimes guilty of that my self but in my defense i'm trying to teach my children things it's a bad habit of mine how old are you i ask because i am 48 yrs old been married 16yrs and i may be to old to be talking to you.

  • the film is confusing becasue it cuts back to this scene it didnt explain the part how they got 2 gallons of water into the 3 gallon jug lol

  • @CJCourage

the film is confusing becasue it cuts abck to this scene it didnt explain the part how they got 2 gallons of water into the 3 gallon jug lol

  • lol thanks for this vid, it just helped me do the same puzzle on professor layton =D

  • lol I have to write a program to solve this for algorithms class. fun fun.

  • ok so fill the 5 g. jug empty 3 g. of it into the 3 g. jug now you have 2 g. then empty the 3 g. put the 2 g. into the 3 g. jug then fill the 5 g. jug and empty 1g. into the 3 g.jug and you have 4 g. in the 5g. jug hope this helped...btw im only 13 so dont criticize

  • we had to do this in school. it was really hard but i eventually got it.

  • easy way to survive this bomb......RUN FOR YOUR FUCKING LIFE

  • @jarvinator100

if you watch the movie, there was a proximity sensor

  • theres a third way to solve this step 1. fill the 5 gallon jug step 2. pour 1 gallron into the 3 gallon jug step 3. fill the 3 gallon jug to the top step 4. dump the contents of the 5 gallon jug into the fountion step 5. put your weiner in the jug step 6. wave it around for everyone to see step 7. fill the 3 gallon jug to the top step 8. repeatedly move your legs step 9. take your weiner out of the 5 gallon jug step 10. fill the 5 gallon jug step 11. pour out 1 gallon YOU WIN!!!!!!!
  • if you are trying to figure out how they had 2 galloons to begin with heres how.......both bottles where empty correct? fill the 5 gallon all the way and pour it into the 3 gallon leaving 2 gallons left in the 5 gallon. pour away whats in the 3 gallon. pour the 2 gallons from the 5 into the 3 and there u go.

  • There are 2 solutions-fill 5 gallon jug, pour into 3 gallons. Empty 3 gallons, pour remaining 2 inside. Fill 5 gallon jug again, pour into 3;5-1=four gallons. Also, you can fill up 3 gallon jug, pour into 5. Fill 3 again, pour into 5. Empty out 5 gallon jug. Pour remaining 3 gallons into 5, fill 3 again and pour into 5; 1+3=4. Die Hard rules!

  • 5 2 3 2354 54 5 gallon 55454 gallon gallon 555 445 54 5 gallon gallon gallon gallon fill fill XD

  • Why don't you just fill the 5 gallon one with the 3 gallon one twice.. leaving 1 gallon in the 3 gallon jug. Empty the 5 gallon one and pour the 1 gallon into the 5 gallon jug. Refill the 3 gallon jug and add it to the 1 gallon already in the 5 gallon jug leaving 4 gallons...

  • LMFAO I can't believe people are actually discussing this online =)

  • Fill the 5 gallon and pour into the 3 gallon -> two gallons left in the 5 gallon container. Empty the 3 gallon and pour the 2 gallon into the empty 3 gallon container --> 1 gallon of empty space. Fill the 5 gallon and pour to fill the 1 gallon empty space of the 3 gallon container --> you have 4 gallons in the 5 gallon container

  • no theres 2 gallons in the 3 gallon jug to begin with so u fill the 5 gallon jug to the top empty the 5 gallon jug into the 3 gallon jug and then your 5 gallon jug will have 1 less gallon

  • still dont get it

  • loll, now after such a long time of trying to figureing this question out I get it... how dumb am I?

  • if only he had a measuring jub on him at the time lol

  • Comment removed

  • The trick is to remember the 3 gallon jug can only be a measuring device.

You fill the 5g jug to the top.

Transfer as much as you can to the 3g jug leaving 2 gallons in the 5g jug.

    Empty the 3g jug.

Transfer the 5g jug's remaining 2 gallons into the 3g jug.

Refill the 5g jug to the top and fill as much as you can into the 3g jug, which should remove only 1 gallon leaving 4 gallons.

  • One has two (so it's a gallon short of full) the other has five (is it full) so if you pour from the full 5 into the 3 gallon that only has two gallons to the top then you know that you just took away one gallon from the five. DEERRRRRR

    5-1=4

  • Jesus, just fill the three gallon container half way and pour what's in there into the five gallon when that container is filled half way. 3/2 = 1.5 5/2 = 2.5 2.5+1.5 = 4 gallons

  • Fail

  • And the full shortest solution:

    1. Fill the 5 gallon jug.

2 . Pour 3 gallons from the 5 gallon jug into the 3 gallon jug filling it. (now you have 2 gallons in the 5 gallon jug).

    3. Empty the 3 gallon jug.

    4. Pour the 2 gallons into the 3 gallon jug.

    5. Fill the whole 5 gallons jug.

    6. And finally pour 1 gallon into to remaining space of the 3 gallon jug.

  • 1.Fill the 3 gallon jug.

2.Pour them to the 5 gallons jug (now you have 3 gallons in the 5gallon jug)

    3.Fill the 3 gallon jug.

4.Fill the 5 gallon jug with the 3 gallon jug (so you have 1 gallon in the 3 gallon jug, and 5 in the 5 gallon jug)

    5.Empty the 5 gallon jug.

6.Pour the 1 gallon you've got in the 3 gallon jug into the 5 gallon jug.

    7.Fill the 3gallon jug,

8.Fill the 5 gallon jug with the 3 gallon jug.

that's the way i always knew

  • This helped me at work haha :).

  • there is an alternate way to solve this:

    1. fill the 3 gallon jug

    2. pour that 3 gallons into the 5 gallon jug

    3. refill the 3 gallon jug

    4. fill the 5 gallon jug to the top, leaving 1 gallon in the 3 gallon jug

    5. empty the 5 gallon jug

    6. pour the 1 gallon from the 3 gallon jug into the 5 gallon jug

    7. refill the 3 gallon jug

    8. pour that 3 gallons into the 5 gallon jug which already has 1 gallon in it for a total of 4 gallons.

  • @starsstanley99 yah thats the method i use

  • @starsstanley99 way easier explanation!

  • i like that voice from that bad man

  • For idiots like me who couldnt get it either:

Step 1. Fill 5 gallon jug

Step 2. Pour 5 gallon jug into 3 gallon jug, leaving 2 remaining gallons in 5 gallon jug.

Step 3. Empty 3 gallon jug.

Step 4. Pour 2 gallons from 5 gallon jug into 3 gallon jug, leaving 1 gallon of empty space.

Step 5. Refill 5 gallon jug.

Step 6. Pour water from 5 gallon jug into 3 gallon jug, which already has 2 gallons in it, and only 1 gallon of empty space, leaving exactly 4 gallons in the 5 gallon jug.

    Thanks

  • i still don get hahahahahah

  • @casual72 lol thx

  • EVERY time im watching this movie i always stop at this part and either pause it and try to figure it out myself or miss the next three minutes of the film because im busy working it out in my head.

    fun scene, great movie(s)

  • @HudsonAO8TQ1

maybe one day they will release a new directors cut version of this movie and hopefully the first few steps of this riddle are put back in!

  • Making evens with odds without having an exact metric gauge. MAKES. NO. SENSE.

Still the best in the series. This is one riddle I'll never understand, though.

  • It's simple.

  • No matter how many times I see this scene, I still don't understand it....All it does is make me thirsty....lol

  • 1. Fill the 5 gallon jug all the way to the top.

    2. Pour water from the 5 gallon jug into the 3 gallon jug until the 3 gallon jug is full, leaving 2 gallons in the 5 gallon jug.

    3. Empty the 3 gallon jug, then pour the 2 gallons from the 5 gallon jug into the 3 gallon jug.

    4. Fill the 5 gallon jug all the way up, then finally pour water into the 3 gallon jug until it is full......leaving exactly 4 gallons in the 5 gallon jug!

Simple, once you know the trick to it. lol

  • basicly the have 2 gallons in the 3 gallon jug leveing space for 1 more gallon they have 5 gallons in the 5 gallon jug they poor 1 gallon out of the 5 gallon jug and there u have it 4 gallons. any questions?

  • Thanks, I understand it now.

They were saying it so fast in the movie, I couldn't make sense of it....

  • the scene is created to confuse people :p

  • I am bomb. You have just armed me.

I love when the screen said that :D

  • such a classic movie,

  • Another Way, if the bad guy only left 1x5g, 1x3g. Take out watch, fill 3 gallon full with water. Poke a small hole in the bottom of the 3gal. Time how many seconds it takes for 3 g to empty. Fill 3 g again pour into 5 g, then fill 3 g again, divide 3 by the time it took to empty 3 g, and use that time to pour in the remaining 1 g.

  • LOL...

If the bad guy only left 1x5g and 1x3g... why the hell would you want to poke a small hole and lose your time watching the water flow when a bomb is ready to explode ??? ^^

Just fill the 1x3g with 3g and pour it inside the 1x5g and you have 4x5g... and save the world or, at least, your ass ! xD

  • My answer is related to the xjhs2007 message. Sorry... i don't get why my answers always go on the top of the comments even when i use the "Answer" link. Should be just under the xjhs2007 message... :-/

  • @Firyanis

umm no idea what your talking about but how did 3 gallons magically turn into 4 gallons just by pouring it into a 5 gallon bottle?

  • @darockk

As I said in another comment, my answer was related to the xjhs2007 message and if you read his own solution, you will understand why i simply said that...

Anyway, if you want the full version : just fill 3g jug and pour into the 5g jug. Fill again 3g jug and pour again into the 5g jug -> Remains 1 gallon in the 3g jug. Empty the 5g. Pour the last 1 gallon from the 3g to the 5g. Fill the 3g again and pour into the 5g : 1 + 3 = 4 ! This is not magic, this is logic...

  • oh i see oO

this was killing me when i saw it on tv

  • pour 5 gallons of water into the 5 gallon bottle, pour 3 gallons of water from the 5 gallon bottle into the 3 gallon bottle, empty the 3 gallon bottle, pour 2 gallons of water from the 5 gallon bottle into the 3 gallon bottle, pour 5 gallons of water into the 5 gallon bottle, pour 1 gallon of water from the 5 gallon bottle into the 3 gallon bottle, now you have 4 gallons of water in the 5 gallon bottle :)

  • yes and another way is... -fill 3G bottle -pour 3G into 5G bottle -fill 3G bottle -pour 2G into 5G bottle, leaving 1G in the 3G bottle -empty the 5G bottle -pour the remaining 1G from the 3G bottle into the 5G bottle- -Fill 3G bottle -empty 3G into the 5G bottle already containing 1G =4G :)
  • "-pour 2G into 5G bottle, leaving 1G in the 3G bottle"

how the hell are u supposted to know how much 2 gallons is??? lol

  • because the 5 gallon bottle already has 3 gallons in it. therefor you just have to fill it to the top and that wil equal 2 gallons that has been poured from the 3 gallon bottle. leaving 1 gallon in the 3 gallon bottle

  • how did i get 2 down for this? try it it works lol silly people

  • It does indeed work out. Pretty basic really, not sure what the voting down is about, heh.

  • Fill the 5 gallon jug.pour the 5gallon jug into the 3gallon jug,leavin u wit2gallons in the 5Gallon jug.Empty the 3 gallon jug.

Pour the 2gallons from the 5gallon jug into the empty 3gallon JUG which leaves u with 2 gallons in a 3 gallon jug.

Fil the 5 gallon jug again which then leaves you with.a 3 GALLON JUG with 2GALLONS of water and a FULL! 5 Gallons of water in the 5 gallon jug THEN!! with da 5 Gallon water fill up da 3 gallon jug coz it has 1 gallon empty when it is full 5 wil bcome4

  • There are two ways to do it... just wanted to throw that out there : )

  • There must have been a scene cut, cause somepeople still don't have a clue how they did it.

    1) Fill 5 Gallons

    2) Pour 3 gallons out of the 5 gallon jug into the 3 gallon jug leaving 2 gallons in the 5 gallon.

    3) Fill the 5 gallon jug, there is one gallon in the 3 gallon jug.

    4) Pour 1 gallon out of the 5 gallon jug into the 3 gallon jug leaving EXACTLY 4 GALLONS!

  • @havoc1310

    this is wrong!

  • holy sht that took me like 5 min to figure out LOL but i am stoned..

  • o0o0 i got the real correct way sonce the gallons don't got measurs in between it mr soprano is wrong

empty 3 gallons and pour 5 gallons in

empty 3 gallons and pout 2 gallons in (remainder of 5 gallons)

fill 5 gallons and use it to fill up the 3 gallons(only need 1 gallon to do it 5-1 = omfg 4?!?!!?!?)

jk say'in it's easier and if any1 need it i'm here XD

  • I think this is how they did it.

    (1) Fill 3g from 5g jug leaving 2g water in 5g jug

    (2) Empty 3g jug & replace with remaining 2g from 5g jug 'leaving 1g of empty space' in 3g jug. ('Have full 5g water' in 5g jug ready)

    (3) Waste time arguing as to whether McClane was going to call Zeus a nigger or an asshole & each accusing the other of being racist.

    (4) Take 1g from 5g jug 'leaving EXACTLY 4 GALLONS'.

Maybe the same as yours but I couldn't follow if it was or not.

  • i still don't understand this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i think we're stupid :) cause i've seen this movie one bajillion times and i still don't get it ! but what the fuck :) it's such a cool movie ,all the die hard's

  • Thx for putting up the solution!!

I could used this to my report...

  • Fill 3 gallons

Pour 3 gallons to 5 gallons

    Fill 3 gallons

Pour 2 gallons exactly to the top leaving 1 gallon

    Pour 5 gallon out

Pour 1 GALLON INTO 5 GALLON

    Fill 3 gallons

Pour 3 gallons into the 5 Galoons and we have

    EXACTLY 4 GALLONS!

Easy to do if you don't have a ticking timer bomb to race! LOL!

  • Good - but I think I have an idea how they did it (see my reply to KFGSHFDGJDS)

  • good, but you need to put your camera in a steady spot....
