@trueisraelite You're not crazy. You're right. They're called 32nds. I don't use tape measures that measure that small. In my line of work 1/16 is usually close enough.
Kudos to you man. I'm an aspiring auto tech and measuring is one thing I barely understand when it comes to reading them. That broke it down barney style and made it very simple. Bookmarking for further use. Thanks man.
Thank you, helpful...I went to a private American school in Austria...we used Metric which is so easy. No one ever bothered to show me growing up, now I know.
@modette99 There reason I made this video was to help out people just like yourself. I'm really happy to hear it's helping people. Thanks for posting a nice comment. :)
@footecarpentry true but metric is by far superior = perfect. I'm a welder and I always convert my work in to metric anyways since i started doing that i have not made one mistake since, from Frames, to box, gates or even home projects like suppressors for your hunting rifles you will need metric to get your dead on marks
Seem a bit funny but very curious to know why we start measuring at 100 instead of 1? Do they make any different? This is definitely the best tutorial for unit measuring so far. Thank you so much.
@johnbuhril Thanks for the compliment. I'm not sure I understand what you a referring to when you say 'start measuring at 100'. I know sometimes on blueprints grade is set at 100. The purpose of this is to avoid using negative numbers when building below grade or (a basement, or crawl space). Is this what you're talking about? Thanks again for the nice comment.
@footecarpentry I have actually seen contractor with the tape starting at 100, but it all matters to the blue print of how it was measured to insure you get the same. no matter where you start on the measuring tape you will get the same answer but better you start on a 0 to 10 if you use your hook up against something you will be off by 1/16th or so reason by ppl use 10s, but if you use it to hook then you are good on measurement.
Thanks for posting this. This reminds me of when I took a swim class. The first thing the instructor did was ask "Who here knows how to swim?" Everyone raised their hands and I was embarrassed to say I didn't. I was dumbfounded that would be asked. I was there to learn otherwise I wouldn't be at a CLASS. His response was "Ok, everyone just free swim". To answer your question, THAT is how things like this fall through the cracks.
Thanks man, I have a job doing carpentry and I'm just learning it all and I'm terrible with the tape measure and that is the key item I need to learn for that job, so hopefully this has helped me, I will watch this vid a few more times. Could you do another vid going in as much detail as you can on the tape measure please?
Thank You for this video I have a job interview and I am comfortable with everything that the job requires other then using a tape measure properly
which I have not much experience with, this is the perfect way to display the use of a tape measure thank you, just so you know that your video will help me in a future job which will in turn help me take care of my family Thank you again.
I just want to say that I am so greatful for you helping me understand how to use a measuring tape. I am embarassed because I never had to use a tape measure until I needed to build something for class. It was a small project but it was a project nonetheless. So I do thank you, michelle73ish
@michelle73ism Hey, you are welcome. I'm happy my video helped you. Don't get embarrassed when something is foreign to you. See it as an opportunity to learn! Like you did (but, minus the embarrassment). Thanks for the nice comment.

Hey thanks alot man! Just thank you lol. I'm 24 years and haven't had a clue on how to use a tape measure. I started looking up on how to use, then I just went to the all mighty YouTube lol. The reason I looked it up is for a job. That requires the Tape Test. I was embarrassed for the longest. But thanks to you its all over now!
@Btrav420 Well, that's about the best comment I've ever gotten on this video. Thank you. I'm really glad my video helped you. I hope the job works out you and you find success. Thanks again. -SF
thank you so much, you have cleared this up for me! I have never needed to use a measuring tape for anything in my entire life until i began working in department in my store that custom cuts blinds and shades. so naturally i needed to learn how to interpret a measuring tape asap! it seemed as though i was the only person in the universe who didn't know how to read this. thanks again!
@CrowdPleeza It's a Stanley 25 ft. I have other tape measures that have more lines like yours. Those are marking 32nds of an inch. Most people will never need those lines. Try pulling your tape out further. I bet the little lines go away.

Thanks for this great video you made it so easy to understand Im a slow learner and when I went to school for carpentry I couldnt understand it now I can and thanks again
Thanks man, came in handy just when I needed it for a job. Took me only a few minutes to learn. Whoever thinks they have it down as well Google 'the ruler game' to test your skills.
Thanks so much- I was doing my Eagle Project and I needed to make sure that one of the measurements included 3/16 of a measure and that I needed to say it just like that. Thanks again!
Thanks very much it really was helpfull I always wanted to learn but I would always get confused. This video was really helpfull. It will be easier for me to read the blue prints at work. I think I speak for eveyone who saw this video n learned how to read a tape measurer when I say thank you very much for making this video. =)
@molekularforscher I somewhat agree with you. However, there are some instances that I prefer the Imperial system. One of which is when I'm using a transit. On a slightly different note, I'm amazed when I hear Irish folks talking about "stone weight." Now that's old school!
@gumboyr17 Here's what that mark is (you're going to slap yourself in the forehead when I tell you). Wall studs are most commonly placed 16" apart, and second most commonly at 24" apart. The diamond is the happy medium between 16" and 24". And, I think you still end up landing a stud at 8 foot. I find many modular home makers use this spacing. oh my gosh, this came in handy for me when i was measuring my foot for an accurate shoe size. I'm not sure if a tape measure is generally used, but that is what I utilized. I'm not gonna be able to remember those numbers though, because I'm really bad w/ math and numbers haha
Funny I'm the construction field and thou I'm not a carpenter I have been having problems reading past my quarters but thanks for the video it made it much easier to understand.
Ya know, I hate to say it but no one ever taught me the right way to read a tape either. This was VERY helpful. Thank you for posting this. You’re a great teacher!
Please help me I was going along with your video and I noticed my tape measure has smaller lines after my /16's what re they called please??? I getting confused for some reason :)
@muaythaifutbol No Problem. Some tape measures have those smaller lines. They are 32nds of an inch. If you pull your tape measure out past 2 feet, I bet they disappear (many only mark 32nds for the first foot or two). Ignore those smaller lines, as only mechanics, mill rites, and cabinet makers use those lines (many others tradesmen and machinists do, but not carpenters so much). Buy a tape measure that does NOT have those marks. Chances are you will never use them. I hope this helps.
Thank you so much 4 the post i have an interview today an i have to measure for the job an this has made m feel really confident in passinf the test thank you again!!!!
thanks for the video. I have never be taught how to read a tape measure, your explanation was clear and direct. Thank you, and i hope they do one day teach this in school.
im a young carpenter, and this was one of my biggest issues, reading that tape measure, but thanxs for the vid, if they taught like this in school it would have been ALOT easier.
I recently looked like a fool when I was measuring something.
I said "it's roughly 4 inches" and the guy I was working with said "4inches and what?"... I was racking my brain trying to remember how to read a tape measure. Out of frustration he came over and read it outloud for me to hear. Pretty embarrassing.
I'm ashamed not to be able to read a tape measure. I have worked with computers my whole life and never got around to learning how to read one. Thanks for the vid.
@testbooster Go easy on yourself. I don't know how to reformat a hard drive and reinstall an operating system. Maybe you'll make a video on how to do that...huh? It would help a million people & me.
Tnx so much, i started to work in a place where it's required to use a ruler and of course to know how to read it. I rushed back home and I saw ur video. Simple, easy, and helpful thanx a lot, i feel better cuz i learned something new.
@Gazca77 When I was a kid, there wasn't any internet. If you wanted information you had to go to the library and look stuff up. It was a pain.... and much easier to just not learn. Things are much better now. I have learned LOTS of things just on youtube alone. I made cement counter tops for my kitchen, using techniques I learned on a youtube video. They turned out great!
Was actually looking for tips on 32nds of an inch. Is it 1/32, 3/32, 5/32, 7/32, 9/32, 11/32, ect...? Someone pointed to a spot between 3-15/16 and 4 inches and I guessed 3 and 31/32. Sounded right to me but need confirmation.
I really cant thank you alot. Im a girl and am taking carpentry, and measuring was never my string suit. And because I couldnt read a ruler correctly I would always stand back and watch, because the rest of my class are males and I didnt want them to think I was stupid so it hurt my grade sometimes. But your video helped alot and now I think I have the confidence to actuall start helping more, That really took some wight off my shoulders and again I want to thank you, It really helped.
Thanks

Please help me I was going along with your video and I noticed my tape measure has smaller lines after my /16's what re they called please??? I getting confused for some reason :)
muaythaifutbol 1 year ago
@muaythaifutbol No Problem. Some tape measures have those smaller lines. They are 32nds of an inch. If you pull your tape measure out past 2 feet, I bet they disappear (many only mark 32nds for the first foot or two). Ignore those smaller lines, as only mechanics, mill rites, and cabinet makers use those lines (many others tradesmen and machinists do, but not carpenters so much). Buy a tape measure that does NOT have those marks. Chances are you will never use them. I hope this helps.

thanks for the video. I have never be taught how to read a tape measure, your explanation was clear and direct. Thank you, and i hope they do one day teach this in school.
ELxcaballo82 1 year ago
im a young carpenter, and this was one of my biggest issues, reading that tape measure, but thanxs for the vid, if they taught like this in school it would have been ALOT easier.

Thanks for putting this up.

@jorgekluney
You're not a fool. Schools just don't understand the importance of teaching this. Hopefully they will someday.
footecarpentry 1 year ago
@footecarpentry After watching your video I took out my tape measure and started measuring stuff around the house to familiarize myself with it.
Thanks for the video.

this info will help me in my new job. Great!

I'm ashamed not to be able to read a tape measure. I have worked with computers my whole life and never got around to learning how to read one. Thanks for the vid.
testbooster 1 year ago
@testbooster Go easy on yourself. I don't know how to reformat a hard drive and reinstall an operating system. Maybe you'll make a video on how to do that...huh? It would help a million people & me.
footecarpentry 1 year ago
Tnx so much, i started to work in a place where it's required to use a ruler and of course to know how to read it. I rushed back home and I saw ur video. Simple, easy, and helpful thanx a lot, i feel better cuz i learned something new.
Gazca77 1 year ago

MacDaddySupreme69 1 year ago
@MacDaddySupreme69 Sir, you are exactly 100% correct.
footecarpentry 1 year ago
@MacDaddySupreme69 heres a clue ,,,, have you heard of the metric system quite easy the spot between 3.15/16 and 4 is probably about 100.5 mls
mugwamp4 1 year ago
I have a video showing how to read a metric tape measure. I concede. It's a good system.
footecarpentry 1 year ago
@MacDaddySupreme69 usually you say #/16 plus or minus so 2 and 3/32 would be 2 and 1/8 minus, since there usually isnt a 32'nd mark
