People like Doug Stanhope are the true artists here. Those beret and goatee wearers he mentions are merely disguising the fact that they have no real ideas to speak of which is probably the reason they constantly seek to conceptualise their "work". Doug Stanhope's material actually means something. It's honest and passionate and that's what makes it superior to anything those pretentious hip cats artists could ever dream of producing.
What's wrong with analysing the stories which definitely influence the way we all see the world? Certain stories resonate with a huge amount of people; why?
Sure, enjoy the art for what it is, but don't be afraid to look deeper into it and reflect on what the story conveys to you. Share what you think with other people you respect, and you might learn new and interesting things.
When people don't bother to look into art, I think we get lazy art.
I don't see his problem here really. Kafka wrote a story about a guy turning into a bug. As he said much of the story is self-explanatory and makes sense on its own. The explanatory notes aren't the basic information needed to understand the story, but an additional interpretation meant to build on the story and use it to gain insight into other areas.
It matters very little to me whether Kafka or Doug intend to convey these intellectual messages, but if the messages work with the story: great!
i believe that he IS an artist. Art is the process of manifesting and expressing your thoughts or intuition into reality so that the viewer or listener can resonate with the you. Art and the process of creating is what makes life worthwhile because you contribute to the lives of others. I think that doug knows this, although he gets caught up in the analysis of art.
I totally agree with everything Doug says here, it is so true... and yet as soon as the video ended I caught myself thinking "props for referencing Kafka". Now my head just hurts.
Metamorphosis and The Depressed Person by D.F.Wallace are probably the best descriptions of self-loathing I've ever read. Kafka is fantastic and Doug Stanhope rocks
I like art, but I totally agree that people over-analyze literature. "Oh that's a symbol for violence in the world.." Bullshit. Never listen to what other people say about a piece of art, come to your own conclusion about it.
@claireshrew awesome, I saw him in dallas texas last summer with 4 friends who were new to stanhope. we all laughed til we were crying. doug is such a natural comedian.
What I think Stanhope is referencing in this resplendent, timeless metaphor is the degradation of the goddess archetype by the patriarchal authorities, the systematic repression of the sacred feminine, and the tragic sexualizing of the female body. The "big, sloppy bucket of snatch", ultimately, is his anima projection recognizing itself in the deepest recesses of his psychoid; the underpinnings of which are inherently revelatory.
I just finished it today. I found it got more interesting and readable as it went on. Not exactly a quick paced story though, and anyone who claims to get it is full of shit.
@snifxx0 No, what makes me 'snappish' is some random tool on the internet taking offence at something I said about pretentious Kafka readers. And like I said before, you taking offence at that just tells me that you probably read Kafka and pretend to *get it* just to look a little smarter and to fit in with the other pseudo intellectual douchebags at the coffee shop. Otherwise, why even take offence?
Your reaction to my original post says more about you than it does about me. Think on that.
@snifxx0 With respect, if you could actually read and comprehend properly you'd see I said 80%. 80% is NOT everyone. That you've gotten all pissy about it as if I had directed it specifically at YOU tells me that you've probably read Kafka and not understood it. Otherwise, why take offence? If you were that secure in your own intellectual capacity, and actually got it, you'd feel no need to take offence at something on youtube.
Maybe you should check out Dan Brown or something.
Once I tried to pick up a flower girl. She was with other two girls one of them was her boss. Well a go to her with a rose made up from tissue and while I was gaming her her boss constantly was trying to sell me flowers to give them to the girl. I got so annoed and I told the boos that I want a receipt before I buy a flower ( I was trying to get rid ogf the boss. But she was so annoying so I leave the girl and I go to my friend. At the edn of the night the flower boss gave me a receipt!!!!
I love this guy's stuff. It's funny though how he sorta had to add that qualifier with regards to him reading Kafka "because I wanted to get into this chicks pants" rather than him just being a little bit curious about something, so he doesn't lose the audience.
The problem is people so often confuse artists and intellectuals. An artist can also be an intellectual and vice versa, but they're two seperate concepts. Bukowski fans know what I mean.
There really isn't anything to "get" about art, it simply exists. The intellectuals are the ones who disect it to the point of ruining the real value of the art. Honestly, nobody cares what you think Kafka was saying. He didn't want you to read his books anyway, if he'd had his way they'd have been burned.
@PJCelis Smartass. On his death bed, Kafka told his best friend to burn all his manuscripts, but instead the guy organized them and had them published. That's history, that's what happened. There's a difference between knowing that and being a collegiate blowhard swinging their literary dick around because they can't write as good as Kafka but still want recognition. "Those who can't do, teach," and all that.
Stanhope is awesome, but I think he doesn't understand profound literature or the criticism of it. He is implying as if writers do no make metaphors or have symbolism in their works. Kafka just wrote about a man turning into a beetle. It meant nothing at all. I'm sure that is what he actually wanted to accomplish through the novel.
He's not dismissing the obvious fact that a lot of art requires a lot of work and interpretation to appreciate, he's just saying that it's not his thing, and trying to get across that his act should be taken at face value... He even tells us flat out that he feels stupid because he doesn't "get it" which implies that there is something to "get" in the first place.
could you try and rationalize his view of art to conform to yours, anymore than you did? lol, you're being the same kind of douche he was explaining at the end of the video, and you missed it completely.
@meloveanna uh, his view of art isn't really my view of art at all. I completely disagree with him, but that's for another day. I was explaining to KWrestler21 that Stanhope doesn't actually think there isn't anything THERE, he just doesn't give a fuck about it! Which is totally fair, tons of people don't give a fuck. In the video, that's an obvious, bare-faced explanation. I'm not rationalizing his views.
If you like Doug Stanhope's ideas, please sign the petition urging him to run for president! petitionspotDOTcom/petitions/stanhope2012/
By the way, seeing Doug live is well worth it. I went to his show in San Jose last month and he was in fine form! His upcoming shows are listed at dougstanhopeDOTcom .

Are you going to take them or give them to Doug? He'd probably appreciate the gift more than he'd appreciate you in the audience clawing at your face and getting freaked out by the candles on every table...
Man, I'm not in the mood for an extensive arguement right now! It's 2 in the morning here!
lol
He says he's not an artist. I feel for the dude because I'm in a sort of similar position. Whatever...
If people want to clasify him as a talented artist for a lack of a better term, that's their problem.
I guess the question is, if you said the things he says and had developed a unique way of saying those things through the years, would that make you talented?
Have you ever tried stand-up? It's one thing to be funny with friends, in a context you're all familiar with, it's another thing entirely to make a room full of strangers laugh consistently for 40 minutes to an hour (or more, depending on the comedian.)
I guess the question is, do you consider comedy in other forms (film, literature, television, etc.) art? I mean, if you think about it, all art is simply what a person says (their idea) and their media (their unique way of saying things).
I've performed live in front of thousands many times but, by all means, I am no artist. Just becaus I write lyrics and rap them in front of a crowd doesn't mean I am an artist. And if people want to call me an artist for a lack of a better term, F*CK 'EM!
lol
I'm a f*ckin' steelworker that has a lot to say and practiced hard and found a way to say them on the beat with rhymes. That's why I'm telling you, I understand Doug in a whole different level... Anyone could be in my place...
Sorry Doug but I do consider stand-up comedy to be one of the performing arts.. I appreciate the fact that he's humble about his talent but seriously Doug man face it you're fucking talented!
I'm still trying to figure out if a big, sloppy bucket of snatch would be a good thing or a bad thing.
