Not sure if someone had already answered you, but curls give the hair more body and texture to begin with so when you tease it, it gets bigger easier. Imagine trying to tease a totally pinstraight hair...you would have to work a lot harder with it.

Hey Judy. I have the same length hair as u and also have layers so I tried this hair style. I really like it alot but my hair did not stay nice in this braid. I've been trying it everyday with new ways to try n keep the layers in the braid but it ends up looking sloppy in an hour. Hope you made out better then me as the day went on.
