Definitely a man of your times. A big fan of the Williams fanfare--Superman, Raiders, Star Wars, etc. I would like to see a list more representative of the scope of Williams's genius: your favorite of the"heroic" ("fanfare") music, of the "magic" music (Witches, Home Alone, Harry Potter), of the "pastoral" music (Jane Eyre, Jurassic Park). His younger fans might be surprised to hear some of the heavenly non-Lucas/Spielberg compositions.
I think E.T. should be the best. When I was little, it would capture me. I'd watch that movie day and night. Never made me cry though. I'm still a kid and I wouldn't be saying this if I didn't like the score! I'm not all that into classical music, but my god, it was magical. Makes me wanna cry now. Haven't watched it since I was like three......like a decade ago now.
Harry's Wondrous World is probably the best theme he made after 2000 and his work on Azkaban was outstanding - just listen to: Windows to the past on audiophile speakers and you'll be blown away !!!
John Williams has written many quieter subtle pieces. Those who think everything JW writes is bombastic need to listen to the other 50 minutes of each score he writes not just the 10 minute main titles!
You said when you were starting out these videos that you would display the variety of John Williams' work in this list, but somehow it's all epic, heroic music. I feel like you left out a giant part of his work, the quieter pieces, the sad themes, the ones that make you cry from sadness rather than pride. For example, my favorite Williams work has always been Across the Stars, the love theme from the new Star Wars, mostly because it is not epic, but rather has a sense of longing to it.
You should check out "Dark Forest" from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, it was on the 2nd CD of the soundtrack so it's kind of hard to find it online, but it's on GrooveShark. This list is good but I do like his darker stuff too. I really wish he could have done the music for the rest of the series, or at least DH 1 & 2. Also "Echo Base" from Star Wars Shadows of the Empire, it's a video game for N64 but John Williams did some of the music for it, I'm not sure if he did this track though.
@DDCullen77 I did mention it and said it was great. It's a list I did awhile back. These top 10 lists are all opinion based anyway and everyone will have a different like and dislike.
Magical music ruined by some egotistical dildo who thinks he is qualified to comment on and rate John Williams masterpieces! Dislike, dislike, dislike......................
@MrDetwaa And ur rationale is....? Actually, I have agreed that Superman is far and away (no pun intended) his best score for years. & most lists on the Web concur with this. It's a perfect, seamless score in every way & actually some of my favs r not the opening & love theme tracks but the part (can't recall the title) from when Ka-Lel as an infant is hurtling through space. Just brilliant film scoring here. Also like his haunting score for Presumed Innocent, a gem which is often overlooked.
Great picks. Bold statement with putting the Superman theme at 1. I would have went for the Jurassic Park as my favorite, but that's what I love about John Williams, everything he does is worthy of a number 1 spot
@blee427 patriot and hook are my favs. You wanna hear real pirate music? type in veigar: pirates. its just so piraty lol but john williams scores will always be the best.
@Droideka133 I already mentioned two Star Wars pieces, and said that the overall collection from Star Wars was the best. Plus, listen again to this part. Can you hear the song in the intro? I still love Duel of the Fates! :)
One thing about Williams scores ( like Goldsmith, Herrmann, Horner, ) is that his music will live beyond his time. Present scores lack substance. When you left a film with these maestro's music playing you never forgot it. There is always a theme with each film you come out humming to. . Present composers coming up through the ranks better study these masters or the magic of film scores will never be the same.
Im glad u put this on here. John Williams is my favorite music composer of all time. Everything he does is the best, and my favorite is Star Wars Return of the Jedi.
I hate when people make these lists and deliberately leave out the Star Wars opening theme because they think it's too predictable or they want to seem artsy by picking stuff people never heard of. Yes, it's been overplayed, but there's a reason why even people living in huts in africa are sick of hearing it. It's the best!
I didn't pick it because it's too predictable, I simply thought the others from the series I cited were better. I acknowledged that the Star Wars saga - as a whole - is his best work. I probably think of those songs everyday.
