  • Thanks for the help!

  • I don't see why people stress so much about RAM. Its important but only very little few need 4 to 6 gigs. and only a tiny few and I'm say 1 out of 50 people need 12gigs or more. people just think they need so much but in reality they have to stop running unused programs.

  • man that was really hard to do

  • Riser cards? I didn't even know those things were still used...

  • Comment removed

  • @codeythesilent LMAO....

  • kewl job... cool mistake... cool fix.. Macs are like women, you can do it right sometimes but they'll find a better for you to do it again...

    MtD.

  • hey man! awesome video! very helpful though. Would you know where to help the ram from? website?

  • Dude is it even really worth it to ever buy a Mac Pro if you're not gonna spend $4000+ for it? I mean high end iMacs beats the entry level Mac Pros, on top of that... you get a super display with the iMac that you don't need to buy for the comp.

  • @Mattsana Yes but if you look at an imac, you can't upgrade anything unless you want to open the entire monitor up and risk breaking something like a ribbon cable. And the Mac Pro's you can upgrade SOOO MUCH! Their are like 6 HD slot's and like 2 video card slot's for dual monitor's and 6 slot's for ram so you can get so much ram on one computer.

  • @Cynice49 Well that's not really true. About the Mac Pro I mean. Cause the motherboard only supports certain things that are Apple certified so any GPU cannot be installed nor CPU. And all the extras for it are overpriced. Getting the iMac you'll get a tremendous display for the money too.

  • what if you opened up your mac pro, and there was a cat running on a conveyor belt O_O lol

  • Good video your good at making video's :D

  • He's so embarrassed about messing up!

  • LOL, mactards have to pay double the going rate for RAM

  • That DDR2 or DDR3 or AppleRAM own?

  • @Anim4000 it dd2 but it an fb-dimm

  • @fatboyuk3

    so.. Apple use DDR2 Technology?

  • @Anim4000 not on the new one

  • Making me cringe watching him replace RAM while he and the Mac Pro are sitting on carpet!

  • I changed my ram while jogging in place on my 6 inch shag carpet and rubbing 2 balloons on my head, no problem here!

  • seriously????

  • yeah i know!!!

  • @maxoutkast - Lol, typical mactard

  • hey Dave was this Apple RAM or OWC or some other company? I was just wondering because I know you have Apple Care and when I went to upgrade my RAM they told me if I didn't use Apple RAM, my warranty would be void.

  • @starkid423 BS, there is nowhere that says that.

  • do you think I made that up? I had a hardware issue with my MacBook Pro and they told me if the problem had anything to do with my non-apple RAM, they would not honor the warranty. Luckily, it had nothing to do with my RAM and it was a some kind of graphics card issue. And when you say "There is nowhere that says that", I know that. I never said that Apple blatantly tells that to their customers, but its something they told me when I had a problem. So no, its not bull shit.

  • @starkid423 No need to get upset. I never said you were making that up. I suspect someone at apple has been misinformed though, as they allow people to upgrade ram in all the computers. If they didn't honor your warranty because of RAM obviously you could easily sue them as their instruction book teaches how to upgrade to ANY ram without making it clear only apple RAM is supported. Apple doesn't even make RAM. No need to jump to the conclusion I am attacking you. If anything just trying to help.

  • cool you have a geeky cat! it was looking inside the mac. it likes tech! lol

  • ohhhhh, the cat ISNT included, i thought my mac wasnt that heavy...

  • Cool job... cool mistake... cool fix.. Macs are like women, you can do it right sometimes but they'll find a better for you to do it again...

    MtD.

  • with a pc there is no wrong way to install ram

  • a pc is all computers not just windows running ones

and all computers have ways that you should put them in to make them work the best

    thats what he is doing

    makeingit work the best

  • sorry let me rephrase that non-mac computers there is really no wrong way to put in ram. macs theres over 9000 different ways to do it wrong

  • Except there are ways to do it better (optimizing for dual/triple channel RAM). And, of course, you could alway put the RAM in a PCI-E slot, for instance.

  • With a Mac PC becomes less of a problem.. it runs both.. end of debate... Windows 7 will only make windows suck less but it will still suk

  • any pc can run both(every os) windows and apple (linux, bsd and suse)

  • Not without a load of messing around inside the OS and the hardware .. what, are you a Microsoft rep or a big windows fan?

    I get it Windows rule..

What ever it takes.. its usually less trouble with a mac - especially these days... you can get anything to do anything in IT - if Windows is your bag have a nice time with the new 7 upgrade.. you'll love.. probably are loving it as i type...MtD

  • no i really dont like windows i just use it for gaming since thats all it is good for. i use gentoo linux for surfing the web.

  • I use both Mac and PC, i'v found as long as your PC is using an intel Xeon processor post 2007 your pc will run OSX snow leopard perfectly, however by doing this on start up windows bios and mac unix (ROM) conflict forabout 20 seconds but then boots up to unix =]

  • You shouldnt slide your Mac pro on the carpet like that. VERY BAD

  • Yes i do own one

  • STATIC ELECTRICITY .... ???

  • From what i hear thats what supposedly can cause harm to your MAC.

  • You can't hurt a mac unless you try to brake it.. it just works better if you do it right 1st or 2nd time...

  • how much ram can you put in a mac pro?

  • shouldnt you have put 1 x 1GB and 1 x 512MB on each riser?

Now it's still unbalanced because theres 1GB on one card and 2GB on the other. 1.5 on each one makes more sense???

  • i think 32 gb

  • if you go to the Apple website you can upgrade to 32GB of RAM and Memory

  • for like 4000 dollars

  • wow...

  • thats why for mine i just kept it at janeric (6 gb)

  • So size does or doesn't matter?

  • more ram is faster large programs and better for rendering HD video or mega huge pictures

but for the basic use all you realy need is 4 gb

i don't need 6gb of ram but i have had time were i use it all soo more is better sometime and sometimes its a waste

  • you can change the logo with bootxchanger

  • Wait wait wait, okay, I'm a computer noob and don't know jack shit about Macs, but I was told that Macs didn't have towers? Holy shit I'm damn confused right now 0.o

  • the mac pro is a tower, but that's the only one. unless you count the mac mini but that thing is tiny as hell.

  • thats the same metal on shuffles

  • Aluminium?

  • You mean that the Mac Pro when you bought it ONLY came with 1GB RAM???!!!!!!!!

That is extremely LAME. I figure it would have come with at least 4GB RAM stock for what those things cost.

  • that ram is fucking expensive lol XD

  • Correction, Apple charges extraordinarily high prices for RAM. It is merely Fully Buffered ECC DDR2 800 RAM. You can get that off Newegg for about $100 for 4GB.

It does not have to be Apple RAM as Apple does not make RAM.

  • Hey it's apple, what were you expecting?

  • He got it in 2007. Plus, Macs dont have the same sort of hardware requirements than Windows does (good example is XP vs Vista, Vista needs more power to run as well as XP on the same machine). Also, the RAM used in the MacPro's are Fully Buffered, ECC and registered. It's server stuff, so it costs more than generic desktop stuff. Apple do charge a lot for it though, which is true, but then most OEM's screw you on additional RAM.

  • You are completely wrong. OS X is far more of a resource hog than XP or even Vista. XP only needs about 256MB to run well.

ECC memory is actually SLOWER than non ECC as it has more latencies.

Once again Apple zealots spouting off from stuff they get at the Mac Store.

  • Where did I claim that ECC was faster? Of course ECC is slower, it self corrects the code itself as opposed to offloading that job to the CPU which in turn has to be told to do it by the software. It's more efficient (and efficient doesn't have to mean faster). Vista does NOT run faster than OS X. You can run Leopard on a G4 that came out 7 years ago and it'll run pretty damn well considering. XP is 9 years old. Show me where Vista runs better than OS X on the same hardware?

  • That argument is invalid as OSX only runs on certain hardware.

You show me where OSX runs faster than Vista on the same hardware.

  • bullshit dude, on my imac with 2gb, mac os x fucking flies. so does windows, but they're even.

  • Now that they have updated their line now the standard mac pro comes with 3 gb of ram $2,499

  • how much did it cost to upgrade?

  • Do you actual know anything about pcs? or computers in general? The reason for the riser cards is that having 8 DIMM slots on motherboard would nessecitate a larger motherboard, and consequently a larger case. It also means that it is easier for replacement. Most workstations (computers used for heavy computing situations like CAD and Video Editing) use risers so that you can replace, upgrade and maintain.

  • A lot of modern games take advantage of 2 or more cores, the new steam engine will support up to 64 cores. Also games rely heavily on RAM for caching textures and information. You can game just as well on a mac as a PC. Don't kid yourself that your gaming pc couldnt be outrun by a well spec mac running windows, cause they can and the new macs have the new intel processors before the mainstream get them.

  • Look at your tower cover, on the inside surface you'll see what appears to be

    some kind of INSTRUCTIONS!!!!!!!!!!

  • so why would you add all that stuff into the mac pro when it runs all games at full graphics and no lagg... so i think the pc has allot of waisted shit in it. and liquid cooling? why? if it runs so what?

  • you should have had smokey help the first time and you might have done it right lol lol what a cute kitty kat hi smokey

  • i dont see why not when it plays at full graphics and no lagg, so why not?

  • i dont see why? in snow leopard it will take full advantage of cores, but thats not even what im talking about.

im talking about gaming on windows on a mac.

it games the exact same as a pc.

  • i game on my mac just fine.

  • mac itself can handle 16 tb but the computer can only handle 32 gig

  • macs run windows and mac, and apple designs their products beautifully. go check the specs.

  • and that leaves... ? nothing?

exept games, and it doesnt really matter cuz i run games at top grappics

  • the mac pro han handle 32 but mac itself can handle up to 16tb in snow lepord. 64 bit windos can handle 4 gig

  • Macs and Windows (64bit versions) run on the same memory address procedures, therefore can read to the same theorectical maximum amount of memory allowed by the 64bit naming schemes. 32bit windows can't recognise above 4gigs because of the 32bit nature of the code. Currently the Mac is limited to 32gb from apple but only due to not offering larger memory sticks, as many workstations (PCs) offer up to 128gigs. Soon Apple will intro the newer 8gig sticks and all will be well in world of computing.

  • mac snow leopard can handle 16 tb of ram, so yeah...

  • i mean 4 gb of ram and macs can handle 16 tb of ram

  • macs can handle 16 tb of ram, pcs can handle 4... pc's suck

  • yr awsome

  • hi,, i wonder if there is going to be any mac pro update of the computer soon?? and when i say soon i mean in about 6 month

  • Probably yes. Cinema displays will get an upgrade soon (they don't sell 23" and 20" anymore!) and that is why MPs will be updated probably.

  • They actually updated them today. They eliminated firewire 400 ports, one of the dual link DVI port's on the Graphics card and replaced it with Minidisplay. and more Ram at the same price points.

  • duuh

  • CAT CAT CAT !!!!!!!!!!!

  • mac pro can take up to 32 gb of ram, i am about to put 8 in mine, although 32 would be nice...and expensive!

  • dude i never thought of that but 8 2gb RAM sticks would be friggin fast as hell

  • why r those sticks so wide?

  • what if you put 8 2gb ram sticks it a mac pro? would that work?

  • Yes

  • It would be like mega fast eh?

  • why not put 1.5 gigabytes on each riser card?

  • because that wouldn't be in matched pairs. ram is picky.

  • they are in pairs

  • read the post i responded to. If 1.5 was on each riser then, no it would not be in matched pairs. It would be a 1gb and a 512 gb on each riser. That is not matched pairs lol

  • RAM works better if you have Equal amounts of ram on each Riser card,If you are doing a RAM upgrade on a PC then your ram needs to Match...So if your motherboard has 4 RAM Slots and you are upgrading from 1GB to 4GB you need 4 1GB Sticks.

  • me two! I love ur channel

  • you are the one who inspired me to like macs

  • May 19 is my b-day... :)

  • there are apple fans, and then there's this guy

  • I actually posted a video on here regarding installing memory in a January 2008 model Mac Pro. After following Apple's directions to put the original 2 x 1GB sticks in the top riser and the upgraded memory in the bottom, I realized this does not work.

In my system, the upgraded memory had to be in the top riser (2 x 2GB) and the original memory (2 x 1GB) in the bottom. When done the other way around, the system would only post 2GB and ignored the 4 GB in the bottom.

  • Hell if I were to do that to my case door it'd fold over like nothing :P

Anyways, nice little tip for RAM upgrades in the Mac Pro. Of course, I don't have nearly enough to buy a Mac Pro myself, but many other people do and will probably find this helpful.

  • What kind of work do you do with this computer?

  • your cat cute!:)

  • Hey i just thought of something. And remembered something and thought i would ask. would like to know the camera you use to record the one you record with imovie.

  • oh why not add the ram instead of getting rid of it only when your full. unless you need the money.

  • hey my grandma had a cat named smokey

  • lol

  • cool my grandma had a cat named smokey too.

  • I guess its a popular name.

  • i know

  • you need to be carful with any computer work you do on carpet, especialy when handeling RAM and other static chips.

You should always ground yourself before workin with anything inside of a computer.

  • you have an earing regei!!!

  • It's designed for stability not speed. It's made for massive and intensive loads for prolonged lengths of time. Let's not forget that it's server hardware, again, stability, not pure performance.

  • i'm sure there is no static on that carpet you are standing on...

  • I thought the mac pros were designed for professional stuff, and not recommended for just basic everyday things.. thats what the apple store near me told me when I told them I have a G4 MDD.

  • the mac pro is not a gaming machine.. nor was it designed to be so(Apple).

  • Well its server memory.

  • Twice as much RAM as in my Macbook.

  • Wow RAM with heatsinks? =POWER!!!

  • was wondering if you had done it correctly or not

    live and learn

  • i just upgraded my PC to 2 GB of RAM :)

  • yeah i was thinking about this when you were installing lol

  • Shouldn't you have installed 1 1gb stick and 1 512mb stick on each, to maximize performance even more? You want to make them as even as possible.

  • Yeah, thats what I would have thought too.... but i have no experience with that fb-dimm or w.e its called crap

  • simonps is right, never work with computer hardware without grounding yourself. i learned that the hardway >_>.

  • im looking into buying a xbox 360 can u please do a review on the xbox what u thank of it and if its a good buy

  • yes lol just buy it its a great gaming machine and xbox live is the best better than ps3

  • 360 is ok

    ps3 sucks balls

  • ps3 is awesome 360 is ok

  • people always go on about witch one is better Windows or Mac all i can see is its what you want . not what other people say . go to a shop and ask them what you need

  • Thanks for the Tip Dav

  • Windows isn't crap.

    -Flint$

  • Windows Isnt Crap your right.

Mac Os X is okay but i dont hardly use it

  • im a mac user and windows xp is ok

  • i agree.

  • thats why mac only offer even numbers for the ram. 2 4 6 8 10 ....

  • yeah but could you order pizza on a mac :P

  • i swear the mac pro is such a beauty. god i am so glad i switched to Mac!

  • dave, you should do a video on what you think about MAC on a PC, im sure you have seen the videos floating around. would really like to know what you think. awesome vid too! keep it rockin

  • First view.

    Just kidding.

I'm glad you updated the RAM install video, David. Well done, and 5 stars! - Alfred.

  • 'almighty' ha yeah sure

  • Really? Care to explain why?

  • It's called jealousy =P

  • bitch be trollin'

  • the funny thing is....

    THEY DONT

  • i agree

  • that side door is just like my Powermac G5s side door even the inside part

  • the cat is cute, she/he likes mac pro too

  • Your cat was also looking in their to look.

  • Why does Apple put in two 512mb sticks instead of just one 1GB stick?

  • Thats what i wanna know. Maybe to cost less?

  • Thats possible but. Now Apple is selling MacPros with 2Gb standard. Maybe their using 4 512 sticks! That would be stupid.

  • alot computer companys do that i dont know y

  • im pretty sure the ram is faster/more efficient that way. instead of using 667 mhz speed on one stick, it uses that speed for each of the two sticks at the same time. it's like trying to dissolve a cube of sugar, it's faster if you cut the cube in half because of more surface area. That's what I think anyway.

  • that's right. its more efficient that way.

  • It's for dual channel. It basically uses the bandwidth of both sticks as one big pipe instead of seperately. It improves performance.

  • YAY KITTY!!!

  • I didn't see you take any anti static precautions when you changed your Ram.

You risk damaging you Mac Pro.

    Great video though.

  • he touched the side door... which is metal.

  • Yes but after touching the door he walked across a carpet (nylon) and then touched the ram again!

Really you should wear an anti static wrist strap connected to ground all the time while he is working on any part of his Mac.

  • Cute Kitty

  • aww cat

  • The dust is actually quite strange, unless you live in a dusty area. The fans should be in such a position that dust doesn't really get a chance to build up.

Maybe I'm just exaggerating, but it's usually a sign of a not-so-perfect design.

  • Alumin*i*um, not Aluminum.

  • Both ways are correct. The way he says it is the American way.

  • Touche, it just really annoys me that they changed it for no reason other than laziness, although it's not really Dave's fault that he was taught that spelling.

  • We live in AMERICA so we say it different dumbass

  • "We" live in AMERICA? Never knew that England was one of the 50 states. And don't you speak "English" in America anyway? The conversation about my comment has already ended, not only was your response late, it was also unnecessary and without thought.

  • Who in the hell said that England was 1 of fifty states?

  • smellyasscream, you're out of your element.
