  • $85 in parts for extended life 15-20 years springs and less than 1 hour to replace. No way I would pay anybody to do this. It's way too easy. Only caution is removing and installing the springs and even that's easy.

  • so dangerous. could of put the first 6 to 8 1/4 on by hand. fucking noob

  • Get a socket wrench and an impact drill; it will save you so much time. No wonder you guys charge for labor. You're there for an hour and a half.

  • Thanks for the tutorial. Give a man a fish, feed him once. Teach a man to fish, feed him forever. Anyway, in Northern Virginia, people pay a lot for this type of thing, so companies charge a lot. This saved me about $300 for two hours of work. Thanks for posting this!!!

  • Both of my cable came off the drum when I tried to put one in placed. Will I need to unwind the torsion first to hook the cable back on the door itself?

  • @KwaiTerk yes

  • As a handyman this video helped refresh my memory. You Tube sure helps. While enjoying a beverage after a quick spring replacement, thank you Gary for the useful tips, I started reading the discussions. There's always negativity, but from experience; I had a friend shred his hand being expected to "work on" a garage door as a framing carpenter. Pros: you could be helpful to us DIY types providing your own insight into the dangers and how to be safe, instead of just trying to scare everyone away.

  • 31 1/4 turns sounds about right. the only way that door wont be balanced is if its the wrong gauge or length of spring

  • Great video! Thanks! I bet all the thumb downs are by installers that rip people off.

  • Garage door torsion spring replacement part 1

  • Great tutorial Gary! The C clamp was the best advise of all, thanks a lot!

  • lol you can have a pro do this job for only 150, so many people every year get injured or even killed doing this. I use to do this job so I know what im talking about.

  • Wow have any of you who are attacking garage door companys ever ran a buisnes? Average torsion spring change is $125-$210 less the $12-$22hr for the tec $18-$40+ per spring fuel in truck, 90,000mi a year on truck and high workers comp insurance. Are we not alloud to make a profit. I saw 5-8 house's a day and brought in $90,000yr. $38,000 in expence's. Man I got rich!!! You got to be kidding me!!!!

  • the best thing to do is bring your broken springs to the hardware store. they would tell you what to get. dont be scared to do it. this mechanic or garage door repair man tries to scare you about getting killed and shit like that. I just replace my torsion springs and its a no brainer. they will charge you and average of 80.00 an hour to replace your springs. dont forget to buy the bars for the tension. you could get it at Ace Hardware for 12.00 buck.

  • do your own replacement. Call a pro, my ass.... you guys over charge. 80.00 an hour my ass. I just replaced my torsion springs on my garage door. and it works fine. I even did my own adjustment. do it your self. its easy. just follow the direction carefully

  • it's funny we didn't see the door working after the repair, my guess is it did not balance ! many things were left out of this video, i'm another door knob that wants to save a life or a finger !! call a pro !!

  • I have seen the blood call a pro

  • I love how garage door mechanics think that everyone but them are killing themselves when they work on doors

  • ur going to get some one killed

  • that door has alot more problems than a broken spring ur a dumbass

  • Thanks Gary. I am just about to replace some torsion springs on a one door garage. I was still somewhat confused on why you needed to release any set screw from the pulley on the left since it seemed like you removed all the springs from the right side. And I wasn't clear about why you needed the clamp. Is the bar in two pieces?

I think people are afraid to die and this is why they will spend the type of money. I will look for springs today.

  • It is interesting (and dangerous) that you don't show yourself tightening the set screw.

To me this would be the most important step to show a beginner. You wind the spring an then in the next frame show the spring without the winding bars.

NOTE: DO NOT REMOVE THE WINDING BARS WITHOUT TIGHTENING THE SET SCREWS.

Sorry, but that is one step I would not have left out of my video.

  • Video part 3 shows him tightening the set screw.

  • gary, why clamp bar with vice grips ? does it really do anything?

  • The clamp prevents the bar from spinning around since the clamp will bump up against the wall.

  • The reason for this is to keep tension on the cables so they don't slack or become disengaged from the drums.

  • i work on doors for a living,to install two springs is 120 dollars.not all door installers are thieves

  • All these "pros" can't blame the average person for doing this themselves, the CHEAPEST quote I got was $350 parts and labor for my 2 springs. Cost me $52 total. Measure your old springs, order the correct replacements, use proper installation procedure, stay out of the line of fire, done. Took me literally 30 minutes. One thing I would recommend is rotating from downward up to 90deg. This way if you do lose a handle on it it goes firing downward instead of through your skull.

  • I almost killed my wife when one of the springs flew off and whent flying trough the air. Companies are not lying about the springs and its dangers.

But great video and now I see what I was doing wrong. Hell you can choke on bubble gum if your not careful. Just get as much trainning as you can a do the damn thing!!!

  • It's a spring-loaded pliers (you mis-spelled it, BTW:).

  • thanx gary me and my 8 yr old son repaired our garage door.. the PROGESSIONALS wanted 389.00 ..horseshit.. my son changed mine .. i paid 90.00 for the spring kit off ebay..THOSE PROS MAKE A SHITLOAD OF CASH OFF UNSUSPECTING VICTIMS. i got quotes of 190.00 to 500.00 to change springs .. takes 15 minutes .. IM STARTING ME A GARAGE SPRING BUSINESS 2MORROW.. ILL MAKE MORE IN ONE DAY THEN ALL WEEK AT MY REGULAR JOB... thanx alot gary smarty pantz!!!

  • I have been in the garage door industry for 33 years. i charge $185 to replace both springs on a average 16x7 door. I can do this job in 15 minutes on average.

I have personally and literally on three different occasions stood in another mans blood while repairing a door. A door perviously worked on by the homeowner that was in the emergency room being stitched up while I finished his do-it-yourself project.

  • PLEASE READ THIS. I saw this and read up on it but unfortuantely could not find a spring for sale locally and my car was trapped in the garage so i had to get some one to come out. 220 dollars and I knew what he was doing before he did it...I even told him what size spring to use. Don't doubt yourself...it really IS this easy.

  • most people are idiots....

Garage doors are probably one of the most dangerous things in people homes., and professionals should be consulted if not used when servicing their doors.

The door in this video has five or 6 2x4 or 3's that are at least 16 feet long... that's alot of unnecessary weight that probably contributed to the spring's demise along with the future guide

"DIYClinic Replacing a Garage Door Opener"

I'm not a professional, and not associated with the Garage Door Industry.

  • ive done tons of torsion repairs and no "do it yourselfer" should even try it. leave it to the pros if u dont want to get hurt lol call a pro like me

  • thanks for the video. the only negative responses come from pro installers and they dont even know what the 2x4's are for!

  • hurricanes...and another add that does absolutely nothing to protect against hurricanes but adds weight to the door...they use wood instead of the normal steel strut because wood bends and doesn't kink...unfortunately your door will still bend

  • ANYONE WHO TAKES THIS ADVICE AND LIVES is very lucky.different springs for different doors,if you put the wrong springs on you create bigger problems.

whats next how to replace rear tortion springs, just incase you dont know what they are gary.they go to the back of the door when there is not enough headroom for springs at the front.I THINK DISCLAMER OR NOT ANY ONE WHO GIVES THIS ADVICE SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE.

  • Thanks Gary, You squashed the "TORSION SPRING WILL HURT YOU" myth. I just removed and replaced my door, rails and torsion spring counter balance. No stitches and no cuts. Get lost garage door companies that rip off hard working Amaricans.

  • I just wanted to write and express my gratitude. Your video allowed me to do the repair myself. Thank you for making and putting this video up for all to see!

  • U R A Dumass For Showing this u Do not know the proper procedure

  • this is a joke. a ratchet with a 3/8 double square socket works much better and faster. and im sure the 2x4 isnt helping the door weight any. i hope this guy weighed the door for proper spring wire size and length. this is a joke. let door techs deal with doors.

  • Call a professional. Unless you want your flesh shredded.

  • yeah you know y you have spurz on there is from over tourqing the set screws and the code is now big metal sturts so get up on it

  • Love the 2x4's on the door ! hahahaha

  • I live in S. Florida and the 2x4's are due to hurricane requirements (from about 13 years ago - may be different now). - Gary

  • I've never fixed any garage door problems. It was my first try. When I read some instructions, it looked like very dangerous. It was very helpful to replace my garage door springs. I have just followed this video and could replace them sucessfully. Thank you very much

  • Bullshit 2x4's are not required . C channel beams / 3 inch struts(2 per section) are required !
