DAVID STARKEY IS A BIGOT!
This man is living in the bloody 16th century and can't face the facts (Even though he's an Historian) that Scotland was too much for England to over-power. It's unacceptable for him even to this day. If I saw this man in the street I'd leave him needing medical attention.
The platonic homoerotic passion Starkey has for the english king isn't surprising. As a mama's boy Starkey has pined for a strong man since a child.
Starkey's current partner is called James Brown, certainly an appropriate name for a homosexual. His resentment against the Scots stems from our refusal to grab our ankles for the english. Our Queen Mary refused the hand of Henry VIII's son and continued Scottish monarchy until her son became King of England and Scotland in 1603.
P.S. Ther's a great book on Katherine of Aragon by Garrett Mattingley. I don't know if its still available, and someone wrote a book about Henry's sisters which contains a lot about Charles Brandon in I can't recall the author.
I can't understand why Henry was so vindictive with Anne after being so obsessed with her that he broke away from Rome, divorced his first wife and would have executed Wolsey if he had not died, but I think it was probably the vast humiliation of doing all this only for the relationship to fail. He of course would blame the woman and probably did believe that she'd been unfaithful.I wonder if she ever really loved him. I doubt it and I think he realised it at some point.
Fucking communist prick.Just watched your shit on newsnight.Weak submissive semi intellectual wanker.Hope you get mugged and kicked in and then plead help from the cops
Oh please, you uneducated moron. You know nothing of history to understand where Starkey was coming from in his ideas expressed in QT.
He is an extremely intelligent historian, who has done more in his career than a lower class idiot such as yourself, who clearly appeals to violence. The only reason for your outburst is just common ignorance and stupidity on your part. Get a grip on your life.
Communist? Get a better understanding of politics before you make an absurd statement like that.

Hahaha..you presume so much! And pray tell and what drawer do you spring from? The top one? I fear not. I often spend the odd hour having little 'outbursts' just to get people like yourself all hot and bothered. Of course Mr. Starkey is reasonably
bright, morons aren t invited onto broadcasts such as Newsnight. Get agrip on my life, mmm as I said before 'presume'..think its all going rather splendidly...toodlepip x
First impressions are always the ones that matter most as I am sure you well know. My first impression of you was an absolute tit who knows little of where he is going in life, and has little prospect of gaining a job which pays more than minimum wage.
Dude, I know machanics that are complete idiots when it comes to book learning, but they earn four or five times the minimum wage.
Education just means that you have a refined technical skill, nothing more. I have a masters degree in history myself, but there are thousands of things that I am ignorant in.
Job and intelligence is unrelated. My brother is a bus driver, yet his IQ was tested higher than mine (and I have three uni degrees!)
There are many people working at minimum wage jobs that are responsible, hardworking people who have families, savings deposits, and own their own home. Many of them even have a few stocks in companies.
Perhaps we live in different countries, but in Australia the minimum wage is $560 a week, that is quite a bit of money and without a family you can save quite a bit.
Your comments are an insult to all the minimum wage people that are working hard and have dreams.
I have a friend who works for minimum wage as a farm hand. He got c$25k for his first year and saved half of it, he got the governments $10k first home owners grant and got a loan for a block of land. Last year he just finished building his house- He worked hard to acquire his dream of owning a home.
You are an insult for all the hardworking people out there.

do you model yourself on him? just because he is a well spoken historian, doesn't make him intelligent. making comments like that doesn't make him intelligent, if anything it says something about his intelligence. historians don't need to be intelligent, all they do is look up the past. what has a king that lived hundreds of years ago got to give to help towards our current state of affairs?
bitsiboo and EFBoler, playing the 'i'm ever so intelligent' card, defending comments like starkey's makes you as bad as the people you are trying to 'outwit'. using wage as an insult. good for you. the reason the world is in the state it is is because of people with his and your attitude referring to countries as lesser in turn referring to the people from that country as lesser. being better paid and educated doesn't make you a better person.
Being a historian requires a reasonable degree of "intelligence". Professional historical research is far more difficult than being able to "look up the past", as the past is often not cut and dried and thus historians have to engage with evidence and develop a logical argument out of their research.
History is a social science that is patterned. Higher level historical analysis can get very theoretical at times and a high level of intelligence is needed to place research findings into the framework of larger social theory.
I have an MA in history myself, and I must say that engaging with the evidence, interpreting past scholarship and making sure that your argument and findings are logically consistent requires just as much intelligence as a medical doctor or engineer.
Historical research is sometimes harder than modern social scientific research. This is because the evidence historians use was often not originally collected for the purpose of their research. For example, the stusy of unemployment in London in the 1560s would require the use of records that were kept for purposes other than research on unemployment (such as guild records, arrests of vagrants etc)
Thus historians have to use intelligence to interpret difficult evidence.
Modern social scientists, on the other hand, can collect data specifically for their research project. To return to the example of unemployment, a modern sociologist would be able to advertise for unemployed people and taylor his questions to them to suit his research.
I am always enjoying your videos. Has the UK government thought of ever sending the exhibit to the US for us to enjoy? I lived in England for 3 years and miss the culture and citizens greatly. I would most certanily go and take my children with me. I have read a lot of Starkeys books and they are a great enjoyment
I love watching and reading about the Tudor period but I think people romanticise too much about it. Truth is most people died at birth, lived amongst human filth and rats, died of disease, plagues - people rarely lived to 40. Rotting teeth, no hair, ppl being boiled alive, having their insides cut out whilst still alive and other cruel torture methods - bloody battles and women have next to no rights. Its good to look at it from the present - but I would have hated to have been alive then!
You're only looking at it from black glasses instead of pink ones. Anyway, if you'd been alive then, you wouldn't be the same person, so it doesn't make any sense to think like that
Anne Boleyn and Katherine Howard are cousins of mine. Angry that Henry chopped off two of of my kinsfolks' heads, I danced a jig of Henry's grave when I was in London.
Darn it I would love to be there for the celebration. As always littlemisssunnydale your videos are informative, enjoyable and very educational. I cant wait for more. I lived in England for 3 years in Ramsey, and had the opportunity to visit Warwickshire. I found out later that a lot of my family is from there. Again keep them coming!
Incidentally I may be moving to Warwickshire! Ive just been accepted to a university in that county and might move there next autumn. I will have the beautiful Warwick Castle nearby, so I will be pleased!
Yep I'm considering going to Warwick. Ive just sent off my MA applications and as of yet only hear back from Warwick, so I'll wait for the others and then make my final choice.
If I do get accepted by the other unis I am going to have a hard time choosing I like them all and I am incredibly indecisive!
Oh no, the artifacts will never travel. They're too old, and too valuble to travel that distance. Plus, their pieces of heritage and have many owners, it would be impossible.
Why wouldn't they travel? They sent artifacts to Atlanta during the Olympics. The Louvre has lent pieces and have had pieces go to various places globally. You even had the Chinese do it with the Chinese warriors that outdate the Tudor period by at least a millenium.
The artficats that we have, oh how few we actually own! Are part of resident exibihtions. Plus, you take away Henry's armour away from the armaries at the tower, you take away a pretty big center piece. Again, they have many owners, and some are heritige pieces. Plus some belong to private collectors. And a whole piece might have been seperated and owned by many. Its too hard to think that the tower or hampton court would part with anything.
But you were in the same room! Plus you got to ask him a question, and he answered you...hmm...if he does a book signing for Henry: Model Tryant you should ask hgim who's his least favorite wife. tehe, you know what I want the answer to be!
I've met him several times - the last was at an academic conference back in December where he did a talk on his latest work on Henry VIII. When away from the cameras he is actually quite pleasant!
I asked him which wife was his favourite and he quickly replied that it was Anne Boleyn :)
David Starkey is my favourite historian, he has devoted so much time into writing books and presenting documentaries about the Tudors. The Tudors are what got me interested in history in the first place
