No he doesn't use a pick. If you notice he's actually playing a classical guitar, in which you almost never use a pick.

Just like playing normally, you need to practice playing fingerstyle. It's much funner and easier than pick in my opinion, but

I only played with pick a couple times so I can't really compare.
