  • Thanks.

  • I have a sand rail i purchase with a trany that has 3 ribs on top, a Gear reduction box on the axle's. The guy that i bout it from said it's a 1600cc Engine. But how can i determine that? I've try to look for the code on the engine block besides or under neath the Resperator... and it appears to be scracth off :-( Any help?

    Thanks,

    Sincerly, a VW Enthusias :-)

  • @DirtyRailers

the type 4 is very different that the type 1....the quickest way to tell the difference is by looking at the exhaust ports on the heads. The type 1 always directs the exhaust horizontally and the type 4 vertically. The cooling system is another give away but aftermarket systems for the type 4 are now available that are similar to the type 1 style.

    thx for watchin'!

  • They say there's no stupid questions if there not ask. I'm sort of new to the vw world, and i'm getting fun of it :-D

What is a Type 4 Engine? I heard you say it came out of your van, what year and model and what type of transmission does it have?

  • Thanx for the videos. I got a 78 2.0 in my 72 westy. Switched to a single Weber progressive from stock 72 dual solex. Big mistake...I assume the dual Weber IDF is a good set up....?

  • @lisadaveg

the set i ran on my Type 4 ran flawlessly.....but for the money in would recommend a set of ICT's. A set of dual 40's runs about 700 bucks, a dual set of ICT's will cost you around 400....for the money i would definitely recommend them.

    thx for watchin'

  • You could put a "kill switch" to the Coil and crank the engine first, then hit the switch powering the coil. I have done this for years with high compresion motors of all types. It works real good. V.

  • Hambone! It's me, Max! Formerly Starbucksmunky, I got a new Youtube account. I'm happy you got your Type 4 started up :) and installed. Unfortunately, I had to sell my '78 bus, but hopefully I'll be buying a blue and white '71 soon (going to college, free money for low income students :D, I can spend it on anything. I'll keep you updated!

thx for watching...i hope you enjoy my channel!

  • @TheoryIsSpeculation

maybe so but i wouldn't recommend it....the hydraulic motors were plagued with issues, I'm not certain if it was due to oiling or design problems but they didn't last as long as solids.

    thanks for watching!

  • is that a bug engine? what carbs are you using there?

  • @onlyreallifematters

no....it's a Bus engine, the carbs are dual Weber IDFs

    thx for watching!

  • great video. I followed Jake Raby's video when I built my type 4, I wish i'd seen your videos on here too. Great tip for using permatex to hold the oil cooler seals in place on your earlier video. What exhaust are you running on this, it sounds great

    Got any updates for us?

  • @1968hambone It just passed smog here in emissions gestapo California. I just ordered a new voltage regulator from auto zone because it keeps killing batteries, and this weekend I'm taking it to the beach for the first time (while I've owned it, anyway).
