  • use some wax dirt. it works better for me when the ground freezes

  • Really liked the video's. Good honest solid info with out all the " know it all attitude " Thanks for posting. God Bless

  • @Yelladog78 Thanks, I don't know it all and never will but willing to share and listen ,

  • Fire it up for Trapperman!

  • @smallblockfuelie

best site on the planet !!!!!!!!!

  • Whats the most you have caught in one season?

  • @thewaspsnest

    39 at 5 farms

  • hay buddy lol nice catch.

  • Did you have to refresh the set evreytime you went to check it?

  • No, yotes have great noses. I've had yotes diggin at old sets months afterwards.

I think the more it airs out the better. I stay away when checking, just close enough to see if the trap is still intact

  • @indianadeerhunting wen u check ur sets, u dont wana walk right up on top of em as this will leave ur scent too much and the yotes will stop workin the area. the only time u really need to refresh a set is after a rain or i relure/bait every week on avg. sometimes longer, sometimes sooner. and also ever couple days i wana get close enough to the set to make sure ur trap has no been dug up or fired by a deer or summin but not too close as this will make the coyote less comfortable working ur set

  • I don't mind, don't have nothing to hide

I use their hides as well as glands for lures. Not much else useful from them.

I trap them in locations that landowners want their numbers lowered as the coyote population is currently way too high in most of our areas. When I get their numbers to a better ratio and in line with the lands carrying capacity I stop trapping them until they get to high again. I do this with all animals I trap as good land/animal managment

  • @bowhunterjohn63 i have a fox that i need to get rid of but it has to be alright because im in a suburban area and its taking my chickens

  • hey john congrates, my favor to use making a video on how to skin a fox or coyote, i could really use the helpl.

  • Thanks for posting these. bit of a problem with them here and I need to get rid of a few.

  • I run yotes with hounds. My dogs run to catch. I have wanted to do a little traping, but not coyote. I have a few terriers I use for coon, badger, groundhogs ect... I want to trap a live fox to train the dogs with. wonder if this set would work for fox as well.

  • Yes, just make the hole smaller and the trap a couple inches closer to the hole as fox are much smaller

    Good luck

  • @coyotekiller81 Better be careful... alot of states don't allow that... just an FYI... good luck

  • @kyadak Actually most midwest states still allow it. I know a guy in Nebraska who has packs of 20 and 30 greyhounds that he lets run free (without a killer) and keeps his best packs of around 5 or 6 in pens.

  • @coyotekiller81 this set will work for fox but u want ur trap closer to the hole. also. if u buy traps, u need to clean the factory oil off of em, hang em outside until they get a good even coat of rust on em, and then dye and wax em. they will smell the trap if u dont and dig it up

  • finally got em ,thanks john good vid......

  • Great vids. Lots of info.Thanks.

  • its an awesome video i caught a 40 pound female using the same method. you should show how to skin a coyote

  • I picked up some good stuff there comrad. Good job big guy!

    Rick

  • Depends on the weather, if its high humidity the bait last longer

Usually I'll give it 10 days.

I've had yotes scratchin at sets months after the sets gone.

That is the main reason I like "commercial" baits. The concentration of them really makes them worth the money.

  • Thanks for the help... learned that i need to spend more time at each set...

  • both videos were great . Learned a few new tricks. thanks

  • Thanks for the videos John. In my province, you have to be 16 to get your trappers lisence, so I'm doing alot of research and trying to get as many tips as I can for next year, and your videos have been the most informative I have seen yet, keep up the great work. Thanks again, Adam.

  • Thankyou John, I've been wanting to hunt a coyote and now I know how, but can I ask a question?

If I made a hole about 6 ft deep, and covered it with twigs and the attractive scent, do you think it would trap a coyote if I a dead bird or steak in the middle?

  • Well you need to check with your states regulations.

I don't believe a "pit" trap is legal in any states. Reason being it is not specific animal targeted and will capture non targeted animals.

That kind of set up is only asking for trouble, I would advise you not to try that.

Snares, if legal in your state, are another easy alternative and can be set with little effort and are very affective.

  • what size trap is that

  • Bridger #2

  • John, my son and I are just getting started, we have picked up a lot of tips watching your videos. Thanks.

  • Good luck, keep me posted on your progress and glad to see you guys doing it together

  • we picked up a skunk the other night and got our first coon today.

  • Way to go, skunks suck, but you can still get money from them if you have a strong nose LOL

Their "essence" ( smelly stuff in the sack around their tail) is worth money, but you need to be careful extracting it. LOL

Great job, keep up the good work

  • John we caught our first coyote in a dirthole set about 15 feet away from a remake on a fox catch. 36 pound female.

  • Comment removed

  • Hey John, we have to use padded jaw traps here in Ct, sucks, any tricks that may help? Ever use them?

  • I had several but got rid of them, did not like them.

I know when I cleaned/boiled them I had to take off the rubber.

They hold just fine, just didn't like them, caught a couple coyotes in them.

Sorry to hear that, wish more people were educated on trapping instead of this unfounded fear.

  • Great video!

  • Thanks

  • try wax paper

  • Won't stop the dirt around the trap from freezing.

I use wax paper as a pan cover, but in my area we get a LOT of freeze/thaw and the dirt gets saturated with moisture then freezes at night and yoru trap won't fire.

Salt has no affect at all, caught over 100 coyotes in the last 4 years just part time trapping

  • salt??

  • I use salt for an anti-freezing agent. Easier to carry around then liquids and easier then making wax dirt

  • whats with the salt

  • I use it for an anti-freezing agent

  • Great job man, thanks for posting this video!

  • what brand of traps do you use

  • For coyotes I use Bridger #2's modified with four coil

  • this is probably gonna be a really stupid question, but what can you do with the coyote?

  • Well you can sell their fur, glands for lures and skulls to people who make stuff from them.

Plus they are becoming greatly over populated and need to be controlled

  • Excellent videos! I just recieved my first trap purchase in the mail today. I can't wait to get started. Thanks for the great info! Keep the vids coming!!

  • Good luck trapping this year

  • so does just the chain being put down that hole will hold it in place???? first time trapping will be this fall

  • Nice set trapperjohn! Thanks for the time you put into the video.

  • Hey i was just wondering what are some other traps besides cage that allow the animal not harmed but just trapped?

  • Well the animal isn't really hurt in this foothold, they can sometimes get a small mark on their paw, to avoid any possible injury you can use rubber jawed foot holds, they do no damage at all, they hold ok also, they cost more and are harder to take care of

Snares can also be made no lethal with a stop so the snare can only close so far.

    Hope this helps

  • whats the average price of a leg trap like this?

  • I've had these for a while, so what I paid might not be the current prices

I believe I paid about 9 dollars each, then another 1.50 for the double coil kit

  • Good vid! Trapped coons but never coyotes even though ive tried in the past. Ive used the dirt hole set and after watching this ive got a better idea of how to go about it. Keep sending the footage!

  • great video man, it would be nice to see more videos

  • i wouldnt use my hand to dust back the dirt off the pan, those traps hurt when they snap on your fingers!! i like to use a small 2 inch paint brush, does what i need it to do and keeps the ol' fingers outta harms way

  • Will fully modified 1.65 coils work for coyotes?

  • Yes, I have used them and caught yotes in the past

  • What size trap was that?

  • Bridger #2, four coiled

This is what I mainly use for coyotes, I do have some #3 offset Bridgers I use, but primarly 95 percent of my sets are Bridger #2's

    Thanks for watching

  • Thanks

  • was that coyote dead or just tired

  • jocalloway,

No, it was alive, not tired, it was being submissive. Some are submissive, others are dominate and bark at you.

  • oh it just excepted it what you do with it

  • Not sure where your going with this, are you a trapper?

I trap these because our local airport has had many problems with the coyotes digging under the fence and had several airplanes hit them either on take off or landing threating peoples life

  • i wasnt trying to call you out as a bad person i was just curious what you did after you trapped them and no im not a trapper but good for you helping people and animals at the same time

  • these are awesome videos! Thanks for taking the time & effort to make them!!!

  • Great video. one of the best I have seen yet.

  • good music to go along hendrix is cool

  • Liked your i call it a trash mound set because of the debree you pile up in order to make this set no need to blend it in because you want to draw a k-9s attention but i would suggest using a visual inside of your hole such as feathers rabbit fur or smething flashey or white to draw attention this way your set has more eye appeal and can also catch fox and bob cats as well as coyotes just do not ver do the eye appeal or you may get more possum good luck

  • I also do that, but I make a HUGE 6" hole and use feathers from dove hunting

I call it my "birdy" set.

This location there are so may coyotes I don't use much visual because of the sign, regular dirt hole sets and scent post sets work fine.

I' trapped that for 3 season and one month and trapped 27 coyotes, had one pull out (rear foot catch) while pulling up to it and I shot one while bowhunting the woods.

I let it rest this year

  • GOOD JOB i wanna start trapping, ive done seen 5 coyotes down here just this deer season so if i start traping i could probally hang one of them

    keep shooting

  • great job . good info im just starting out.thanks alot good luck

  • very good post, love informative notes, and the visual learning as well

  • Great video, good job, very informitive, thanks for posting it!

  • good video

  • Well done! Hope you got rid of the sniffles.

How many sets do you usually run?

  • Good Job TrapperJohn Keep them comin, Great Vid

  • Dobbins "Canine Select" is the BEST lure i use. That stuff ROCKS!

  • hi buddy? i dont think he thinks your his buddy also wheres the money shot?

  • What do you use for a lure?

  • I use a few types of lures.

Early season I use a curiosity lure, mostly coyote urine or red fox urine, maybe some coyote scat or Hawbackers coyote special 200.

I also use Dobbins K-9 select, GL-40 and I also use late season some beaver castor. Guess it makes them curious.

  • 5 stars.

  • Now that was a good trapping video. Very informative.

  • Very informative and a great lil video. *****

  • Awesome video, very helpful, thanks for posting!

  • Thanks
