  • Watch what he's doing with this thumb when he begins a phrase. He's strumming his thumb down while the strings are muted and at the same time uses his fingertips to pluck the notes. Using his thumb is what gives that low, chunky thwump that gives the notes that he hits so much more body and punch. Derek Trucks does this all the damn time. Sounds so good.

  • Play any in D tuning. I was looking at your DVD and will be ordering the Full set looks like a good deal for the prise aswell.

I use to watch Dicky Betts in Sarasota, Fla when they got started. Im in Bradenton, Fla

I was at his house one time when he lived in Sarasota in Whitfield area.

  • Do you play that guitar for slide primarily? Is it set with higher action? I've heard people say to just leave your guitar as is and learn to play it with low action. Just seems easier to play it higher to me.

  • finally I hear a good stuff played! well done !

  • Very nice! You have great technique! Thanks for the lesson!

  • what kind of slide do u use in this video? how do u get ur tone?

  • Wow that's fantastic. You're amazing! I'm 14 and just starting to learn slide. I'm not very good but this really helped! You really channeled Warren's style!

  • Great lesson John!!!!! I really dig the Warren Haynes style. How much of your dvd is standard tuning??

  • @SingleCoilVoodoo Thanks! I have created 3 DVDs on how to play Standard Tuning Slide. Thanks!

  • i think you mean derek trucks

  • Yea thats trucks for sure.

  • Warren plays slide too.

  • listen to no one left to run with any more

    its warren

  • @Bmac22390 Trucks palys in open tunings, Haynes plays this type of stuff, standard tuning

  • man you've got great tone.

    Sounds awesome.

    thanks for the help

  • Awesome lesson. Thanks for helping me get better at slide guitar.

  • Good stuff..Thanks bro

  • who makes your slides?

  • You can get them at your local guitar store, usually. I'm not sure what type he uses, but if your lucky enough to find an original coricidan bottle slide, that would work great. Dunlop makes a reproduction, but it's ceramic. Still good, though.

  • Dunlop makes a glass blues bottle!

  • I coulda sworn it was pyrex. Thats waht mine is anyways.

  • You're right, it is pyrex. When you said ceramic I was thinking of the material of a "mudslide" type slide. Pyrex is a ceramic. Still makes a great sound, and is a close as you can get to the original coricidan bottle.

  • I'd love to get one of those "mudslide" type slides your talking about. They look awesome! not too sure about how they sound though.

  • Great video. i try to watch all of your stuff it has really advanced my play to the next level! thanks for that. but I have one question. I have gotten the smoothness down really well and the licks really well. But i only play slide in standard tuning and i find it hard to make my own phrases. In standard tuning are you limited in your slide playing than in open E? Thanks for your vids again! keep rocking!

  • Mr. Tuggle, that was fuckin A awesome! Great Job!

  • you got that warren haynes sound down

  • now you need to battle steve vai in a room full o coloured folk

  • haha yea you got that right.. they would love this

hopefully ur talkin bout this guy

  • i love you john tuggle

  • man this guy makes that guitar effin sing!!!

  • What do you think of PRS guitars for slide? or just as guitars in general? lol Warren played one in the late 90's and it had a wondeful thick tone.

  • if it obviousley had a nice thick tone then why do you need to ask how it is for slide ?

  • lol, well I meant in feel. How the necks are, Pickup combos etc. I'm sure theres way more of a selection of PRS guitars, sounds etc. I just wanted some one elses opinion. =P

  • No One to Run With. I LOVE that song!!

Its great to hear someone play it so well.

Time for me to get practicing too :)

    Thanks so much!!

  • what string gauge are you using? im using 11s but they still feel too light with a slide. im using 16s on my dobro hehe.

  • Those are .011s. I been trying out .010s lately.

  • @puakaastro probably better just raising action then changed guage

  • fantastic! you've really got the tone as well as the technique.

what amp / pedal[s] are you using?

  • 74 Fender twin and an Ibanez tubescreamer. The reverb on the Twin really helps the sound.

  • thanks, appreciate you taking the time to reply.

    really sounds fantastic!

can really hear the reverb helping to blend / smooth things.

  • Awesome!
