I think everything ubuntu needs is make it simple to use, we don't need all these effects when we use for work, It looks good but just for perfect computer.
"Only 2 GB"? Uh, is some desktop effects take up 2 GB of system RAM PLUS your video card's resources (it's the only reason the RAM would be used for video) then linux can kiss my ass.
well i dunno all features of Linux/Ubuntu, just switched from Win 7
i thought it would be easier to handle in case of an Android Device.
Android SDK and such don't realy run very well at Win7 and my Win7 is a *secure copy* so can't update.. xP
But i'm learning Linux/Unix now and hopefully i'll expand my knowledge^^
btw. i got 8GB RAM and 1GB graphic memory, i just inserted only 2GB RAM and the 1GB or graphic - it runs very very smooth and it's fast not lagging or such.
we seriously need to stop telling Windows users about Compiz-Fusion. Doing so makes them think that this is what Linux is all about.
In fact, this is just some shitty useless desktop manager. Linux is way better than this and is much more than a simple gadget.
It's an OS which is safer, faster, more stable and more sophisticated in every single way. It's not idiot-proof YET but eventually it will be. Only idiots can actually ruin such amazing kernel.
hey i have a really old WinXP desktop with 512mb RAM and 1.3ghz AMD processor. Can anyone tell me if i would be able to run Ubuntu? Also, what is VirtualBox?
@xEpiphoneSG virtual box is a program that lets you run an entire os without formatting your hard drive or doing anything that will change your computer settings.
Compiz rocks, but I prefer OpenBox. More minimal, and doesn't have all the fluf I don't need or want. But isn't great I can make that choice. I don't have to take the default choices, unlike windows - where you can't change the window manager or other low level details.
@jneilan38 iTunes isn't made for Linux, thank Apple for that. There may be ways to run it in wine but there are better media applications for Linux but Apple tries to make their hardware incompatible with open source software. My iPod battery is junk (thanks apple, I won't buy another) but prior to that I was able to sync with free software. Call Apple and ask if they support an alternative, I would for you if it weren't just a youtube comment.
What do you want to show ? You showed to many things which has no relationship with compiz in Ubuntu 's Gnome Desktop ,You even showed the 3D flash wall in firefox ........
@lemler33 I have a mostly up2date hardware, and i didn't need drivers. 9.10/10.04 manage everything for me very well: TV Tuner, Printer, WLAN, VGA, etc.
You only need driver legacy or rarely supported scanner/printer and WLAN chip. Anyway, Ubuntu has awesome support and community.
What if I install this OS on my main drive will it wipe out the files that I have on my recovery disk drive too? I was about to format all the the files on my main drive because I wanted to use ubuntu. But the problem is I wasn't sure if it's gonna delete my recovery partition files too! pleasse answer me soon!
@chixyman If you format a hard drive, it will only remove the files on that drive and that drive only. It won't effect any other drives or partitions.
@HappySpaceInvdr I have Karmic Koala (9.10) and the lagging is not caused by the desktop environment. It is really fast. My guess is the screen recorder he/she used :/

okay, so does anyone else have this problem, if not how do i fix it?!

@OwNaGeOfDaLiAm chek if you are running ubuntu 64 bit, flash is run in emulation mode (32 bit mode) this creates problems with the firefox 64 bit browser.
Ubuntu 32 bit/firefox 32bit/flash bit 32 should run fine.
Ok.. Beside this bling-bling desktop, can you show some performance points on Photoshop or DirectX apps like Dx10 or Dx11 games? Or maybe Adobe Flash or 3DMax or Autocad? I see all this movies about how cool Ubuntu or Linux Mint are.. But all the contents are about the Gnome Desktop or KDE Desktop effects.. What's the point?
I guess the issue is that not many companies develop applications for Linux, probably because not many people install linux on their machines. As far as I know most servers use Linux because of its high security compared to windows.
I guess every OS has its advantages, Windows is user friendly, and has lots of application so it suits every day use & Linux is best suitable for managing servers and a little bit hard to use.
@mkaatr thank you for not cursing me when skeaking of windows before linux :) most linux users do this. Yes, it would be great to see some common apps from windows running without emulation. As for security issues for my home pc i don't see any problem with windows. I just use a free antivirus. Oh by the way I find Linux very user friendly at this time. I guess if I had a laptop I would use Linux but not in this cool desktop effects way, I would try to search for real functionality.
@mkaatr I must say I have a real problem with this desktop effects film desease.. Users don't show the really good points of Linux. All you see are desktop effects and Linux install films most of the cases. "Wow, how cool is that! I have wobbly windows"
Well, this is my problem too, I was trying to find out what are the new features in Linux, and got into this video. I would guess the videos must focus on the software that comes with Linux and how they could replace Microsoft counterpart.
Probably a number of deals needed to be signed with major companies to develop commercial software for Linux. I don't see this happening because companies won't spend resources and money on a small market (compared to windows and mac i mean).
ubuntu 9.10 really is a great operating system and is definitely very easy to use, i found anyway. very much more usable then windows. but it simply doesn't have the programmes that i use everyday such as itunes, windows live messenger ect. it also doesn't have a flash plugin for google chrome which is a big disappointment because i use flash all the time on the internet.
@lafaspot i know it does, but imo flash is really buggy and laggy in ubuntu, thats why i dont use it. whenever i pause a video the audio usually carries on about a second afterwards, and happens in ALL the browsers i've tried in ubuntu.
@lafaspot Yes, chrome has a flash support on ubuntu 9.10 and 10.10.
For windows live messenger you can use also aMSN the, that is the version for Linux. The Itunes has many others similars which is possible to use and have his function.
@OwNaGeOfDaLiAm amarok can handle Ipods and is much more usable than Itunes, Itunes is one of the worst pieces of software I've used in terms of design and usability. There's many alternatives to Windows Live Messenger; Emesene, Pidgin and others, fairly sure when I installed Chrome it already had a decent flash plugin and I'm using an amd64 which is not supported as widely as intel
hey did u have problems with the live cd? im trying to run the live cd, but dont run i have to change bios an actually use a dvd instead of cd, so i change to run dvd first on bios, did u have the same problems?, or just my computer, i dont isntall anything yet, i want to make that computer run only ubuntu, because i have another one with windows 7.
@neoistheone100 If you still haven't found a tutorial go to system>preferences>compizconfig and then scroll down and enable "desktop cube" then customize it, eventually I am sure you will get it going.
Can this be done on Kubuntu KK? Or does that involve a lot of coding? I have a laptop with an 80GB hard drive and I just installed Kubuntu 9.10, I know that Kubuntu has KWIN and Ubuntu KK has something else. Can something similar be done with Kwin or does it only look this way with Ubuntu?
@vadarfone Thanks for the offer but Ive just fixed my MBR and formated the Ubuntu partition into oblivion. It is a nice OS, but not very user freindly. If I ever get a machine which has Ubuntu compatible hardware I´ll try it again. Why spend ages trying to sort it out, when I can easily use windows without any problems.
@bicnarok Well, I agree about the current ease of use of Windows; I am typing this on an XP install!
I think with Ubuntu, and Linux in general, it is very usable for the average user, but it quickly becomes difficult. I love it because I am a computer nerd, but I realise that it currently is not for everyone, although I think it will rapidly become more stable for beginners.
Ive been using computers since the sinclair spectrum so i´m hardly a beginner. The problem is if there are no drivers for Ubuntu its functionality is reduced.
i am in desperate need of help ...i downloaded ubuntu and i would like to get my desktop like the ones shown in the videos.....this is my first time using ubuntu and any help would be ggreatly appreciated
i googled and there seems to be an issue with ur card (specifically its drivers) and this version of ubuntu and compiz. there might be a fix if you do more searching, you'll def have to deal with the terminal tho if there is a fix, for sure...but it looks like a compatibility issue; most ppl were having resolution problems
well...not really; tried it last night, everything was displayed perfectly and smoothly. the OS itself is kindof a letdown though...waaaaay too complicated.
I hope the compatibility was improved a little, cause for laptops the 8.04 was crap.
I'm very happy with Windows seven which is , i think, more compatible and more beautiful than Ubuntu... where is the practical interest of shaking windows?? Aero Snap is cool and handy!

How you get this toolbar on the bottom of the desktop with Firefox, Google Earth,... ?
betzearena 1 year ago
Hmm, Ubuntu certainly isn't crap.
Do you need help in setting it up? I would be happy to help you.
vadarfone 1 year ago
@vadarfone Thanks for the offer but Ive just fixed my MBR and formated the Ubuntu partition into oblivion. It is a nice OS, but not very user freindly. If I ever get a machine which has Ubuntu compatible hardware I´ll try it again. Why spend ages trying to sort it out, when I can easily use windows without any problems.
bicnarok 1 year ago
@bicnarok Well, I agree about the current ease of use of Windows; I am typing this on an XP install!
I think with Ubuntu, and Linux in general, it is very usable for the average user, but it quickly becomes difficult. I love it because I am a computer nerd, but I realise that it currently is not for everyone, although I think it will rapidly become more stable for beginners.
vadarfone 1 year ago
Ive been using computers since the sinclair spectrum so i´m hardly a beginner. The problem is if there are no drivers for Ubuntu its functionality is reduced.

Install Compiz Fusion, get all the extra stuff needed to make it work, then start playing with the settings in the Compiz options.
The first time you manage to get the 3D Desktop working, you will cry with joy!
vadarfone 1 year ago
@CRUCIALTAGZ First install it then go online google to do research on compiz and AWN for nice looking desktop

i have a ati radeon 4850 but i get problems on compiz using ubuntu 9.10 while works all perfect on ubuntu 8.04....
MegaRayone 1 year ago
i googled and there seems to be an issue with ur card (specifically its drivers) and this version of ubuntu and compiz. there might be a fix if you do more searching, you'll def have to deal with the terminal tho if there is a fix, for sure...but it looks like a compatibility issue; most ppl were having resolution problems
cobaltdan9 1 year ago
9.x onwards is currently not compatible with a lot of the ATi Radeon cards.
8.10 is the latest version that works perfectly for me with my ATi card. I reverted to this after messing around for a while.
My advice; just use 8.10 until they sort it out.

Nothing changed compared to 8.04 optically.
I hope the compatibility was improved a little, cause for laptops the 8.04 was crap.
I'm very happy with Windows seven which is , i think, more compatible and more beautiful than Ubuntu... where is the practical interest of shaking windows?? Aero Snap is cool and handy!
