@nubiannut52 Yah I get all that, though I don't think French letters is an actual brand, just what people from other countries call condoms. A German sense of humor I'm sure is meant to be an oxymoron. Sounds great. Maybe what makes Elvis so great is that you get the feeling that there is deeper meaning just beyond our ability to grasp it.
I was a little late in hearing this song. I was only aware of his first few albums but once I did, it instantly became my favourite. The lyrics and the way he delivers them are spot on brilliant and the Attractions are fantastic here. Just an incredible song.
@surfric Dutch courage is also referred to as liquid courage or alcohol induced courage. French Letters is a brand of condoms made in France . German sense of humor. German humor or jokes don't translate well into English, and vice versa, because of the many dialects in German and reliance on customs and historical references that may not be understood in other countries. This is a truly amazing song from the greatest wordsmith since John Lennon.
I just saw him (again) in Portland Maine...Must be at least 11 or 12 x over the years....a musical, and lyrical genious.....To me, "A Man Out Of Time".... is a paradox... Still love someone from the past....but we are getting older....?is it too late?...

Saw this on TV back in the day.. Thanks for posting it.. I still have it on an old VHS tape.. "For the high heel he use to be, has been ground down". Probably my most favorite line by EC. I didn't see him until '96, and he opened up with this song.. That was just awesome.
this is my favorite elvis costello song and from my all-time favorite album by elvis costello. it's also the first "adult" album that i've bought since i feel it's about adulthood and such.
Every second of this performance is musical bliss and perfection! All four members of the band are incredible on their respective instruments, but manage to combine into something beyond the sum of it's parts, and magical!
a magnificent performance of one of the man's best. pete thomas is incredible. so are steve & bruce...goddamn what a band. just can't come up with enough superlatives here. hey no dislikes, alright! guess the haters haven't found this one yet, sshhhh.
Just had a big fight with the wife. Crying to this song puts everything into perspective. And yet the sorrow I feel for my wife and I is somehow transformed to happiness thru understanding with this song. Thank you Elvis I have rediscovered you once again.
Elvis C....Elvis C.... Elvis C... He was ahead of his time then; he still is in 2010. When will he be acknowledged as one of the true musical geniuses of his generation?
@wdrayr absolutely ! Well stated. The only musical artist that I have continually followed from My aim is true to National ransome... or in other words from middle school to middle age !!
there is so much going on here. Top production...the keyboard is AMAZING...the chord changes and mostly for me the amazing vocals and phrasing of Elvis. WHAT A SONG...amazing.
My absolute favorite Costello-tune. Dark, angry, self-loathing yet mysterious with an irresistible melody and some god-like chord changes. Nothing short of splendid! Great to see Costellos fantastical voice control and the commitment of one of rock´s greatest backing bands, The Attracions.
Exquisite. One of the most beautiful songs ever written, I think. Elvis & Co out-perform the album version here. Thanks, thomsund, for posting. I wish I could time-travel, but since I can't, I have youtube.
Love Elvis... and this is one of my favorites... especially live...

Days of Dutch courage, just three French letters and a German sense of humor. OK, that's the lyric. So what does it mean?
