  • A true Master.

  • poor bud also was given shock treatment. he was still a monster player in spite of.

  • this shit is down right frightnin

  • In a Thelonius Monk bio the author said that at some point Bud Powell got beat down by several NY cops (in his youth). I also read that later in life he took antischizophrenic meds while living in Paris. His wife (girlfriend) kept them + dispensed them. I don't know specifically what it was like thorazine or lithium. Whatever though it would affect yr LOC.

  • He seems distracted.

  • @Ingr9821

Ha... thats an understatement! He was NUTS!

  • I thought he got blackjacked ...

  • @bongoloid77 That was actually Art Tatum.

  • @ltfunko What was Art tatum?

  • @bongoloid77 Art Tatum was blackjacked in about 1930 by a mugger in Toledo. It ruined a surgery he had to partially correct his vision.

  • Piano is fine, Bud is just substituting chords throughout the tune

  • @Bomberomusician

yeah, rather a master of the craft, but Monk's compositions come with a heavy lot of baggage anyway...

  • Actually, there was shock therapy, but it was after the beating that his playing drastically changed.

  • Piano sounds a bit out of tune. But Bud remains magnificent. There was no shock therapy--in the streets, when the coppers were harassing Monk, Bud voiced objections and was promptly beaten on the head with a billy club. In his jail cell that night, the fuckers soaked him with ammonia. That's America, too.

  • The real deal tonight.

  • holy humanity

  • 4:30 ish , his left and right hand move to the extreme opposites of the keyboard, so claude sifferlen, i see where it comes from! love bud! love bud!

  • these are my true facts three:

Bud Powell is a jazz master.

    Niels is a solid tree.

Jorn Elniff is the best name ever.

  • Bud got roughed up by N.Y.`s finest :-(

  • This is the best musiic ever done. The best tune composed and the best performing of it by anyone!

  • Magnificent. Can not belive that it is in the e-space. Best song ever wrote.

  • I think NHOP played with all great names of jazz.

    The guy was a monster!

  • Bud Powell was already then a shadow of his earlier capacities..........????????!!!!

Was he truly a shadow or just...older?

Must have been an incredible place, the Montmartre.

  • @thefredsax its not the age thing man..its brain damage. he got 1 or more brain shock therapy.

  • This is from the Montmartre Jazzclub in Copenhagen around 1962 - I was there! Remember this like yesterday - incredible! Bud Powell was already then a shadow of his earlier capacities, but what a shadow! The bass player is Niels Henning Ørsted Pedersen, he was 15 yrs. at he time and the drummer is Jørn Elniff.
