In a Thelonius Monk bio the author said that at some point Bud Powell got beat down by several NY cops (in his youth). I also read that later in life he took antischizophrenic meds while living in Paris. His wife (girlfriend) kept them + dispensed them. I don't know specifically what it was like thorazine or lithium. Whatever though it would affect yr LOC.
Piano sounds a bit out of tune. But Bud remains magnificent. There was no shock therapy--in the streets, when the coppers were harassing Monk, Bud voiced objections and was promptly beaten on the head with a billy club. In his jail cell that night, the fuckers soaked him with ammonia. That's America, too.
This is from the Montmartre Jazzclub in Copenhagen around 1962 - I was there! Remember this like yesterday - incredible! Bud Powell was already then a shadow of his earlier capacities, but what a shadow! The bass player is Niels Henning Ørsted Pedersen, he was 15 yrs. at he time and the drummer is Jørn Elniff.

@bongoloid77 Art Tatum was blackjacked in about 1930 by a mugger in Toledo. It ruined a surgery he had to partially correct his vision.

Piano is fine, Bud is just substituting chords throughout the tune

@Bomberomusician
yeah, rather a master of the craft, but Monk's compositions come with a heavy lot of baggage anyway...

Actually, there was shock therapy, but it was after the beating that his playing drastically changed.
