This is actually a joke I think. I suspect that the Scot from Glasgow who gave them advice on what to wear and do (according to the Notre Dam website) was either English, a priest or thespian without a clue or more likely - a protestant who deliberately set them up to look stupid. It's a shame as I am very sympathetic to the Irish traditions but this is frankly embarrassing - oh! and the dancing and marching is infantile garbage apparently based on the antics of Scrooge McDuck of Disneyland.
First off, the Irish hate the British military but these red coats are based on the British Army Redcoats of the 17th to 19th centuries. These Kilts and Plaids are clearly based on the military pattern adopted by the Highland Regiments of Scotland following the generalisation of use of the Philabeag in the 18th Century. Their spats are those used only by the Highland Regiments of the Crimean War. Their hats are arguably Irish pattern as used by (Primarily Protestant) British Regiments. Shameful!
@Albainn1 Firstly, they are in Scottish garb. They're an American school, named after Our Lady of Notre Dame du Lourdes after the apparitions in Lourdes, France. They are nicknamed the Irish, probably because of their religious affiliation being that a majority of Irish are catholic. It's a multicultural thing.
Secondly, learn proper grammar. You couldn't even dream to be admitted to an institution such as Notre Dame.
No offense, but I am trying to understand why the FIGHTING IRISH are wearing SCOTTISH kilts. Help me to understand why kilts were selected for the IRISH GUARD. I'm baffled by that. Anyone?

The uniform of the Irish Guards pipers is, like the Scots Guards, a kilt and tunic.
