  • Please go the rock and roll hall of fame - rockhall.com/get-involved/interact/poll/ - to vote for WAR to be inducted - you will be voting for the ORIGINAL group - this is something that can't be taken away from them.

Poor video quality and all it's still better than most of what passes for music today. 'nuff said

  • good music never dies long live the 70s

  • Good fellin sound, love the harmica

  • WAR is up for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame AGAIN. The RRHOF is giving folks a vote. These guys aren't doing as well as they should be in the poll. Visit the web site and click on the link for 2012 nominees.

  • Every once in a while a lamb wanders astray from the flock.

Let us all be shepherds and encourage the lamb back to it's rightful family.

One such member of the flock: Leroy "Lonnie" Jordan has wandered away.

Please make a concerted effort to guide this member back to the family who wants and needs him.

    Your voice will be heard.

And Mr. Jordan is truly missed.

I would encourage everyone to support "The LOWRIDER Band" and it's original members.

Support the campaign to reunite them together again.

  • When I was a teenager the only propper way to play WAR and MANDRILL was to crank it loud. The first time I seen WAR live was at Fenway Park BB, PaPa D, LEE, Scott, etc... rocked it.

  • @Mr00destruct0, Cool. Just so you and WAR fans know, Howard Scott, Lee Oskar, BB Dickerson, Harold Brown are still alive and well, but are now known as The LOWRIDER BAND. THEIR WAR name was STOLEN over 18 yrs ago, by their lowdown, snake of an ex-producer Jerry "Golddigger" Goldstein and they didn't bow down to being OWNED for the name THEY made famous. I will have the great fortune to see them in Las Cruces, NM this 4th of July. So glad I know the TRUTH or I would have missed out. Peace.

  • I used to throw this 8 track in every night when I was probably 13 (1974) going to bed. Too many good songs. Deliver the Word, Beetles in the Bog, City Country City, The world is a Ghetto, Slippin' and of course All Day Music. Timeless!

  • Of course . . . any gypsy man of WAR is a friend of mine . . .

  • Wow!!! Somehow I'd forgotten this jam. Since the advent of hip-hop I've been caught up in a time-warp, revelling in the GOOD music of the late '60s through the 80s. The oldies stations that I listen to have playlists (how dumb) and only play certain selections of the various artists who they feature. I hadn't heard Gypsy Man in several years. Has anybody got City Country City?

  • Is this Madison Square Garden? I was so there and with War.. Lee, Jerry Goldstein and such.. was a day i will never forget.A big turning point in my life.

  • @west83rdnyc If I'm not mistaken, yes.

  • The Led Zepplin of R&B. So innovative they could not be pigeonholed for popular radio play. One of the best bands ever. Each member could take the concert solo, even the percussionist.

  • in love with war at 16 now 53 still in love listening to all these guys brings back so many memories seen war at bristol uk

  • Eric Burdon did a jam-up version of 'Paint it Black' - I doubt War ever did though.

Burdon left War a long time ago.

OTOH - if War covered Paint it Black --- I have some serious money on the bid.

  • @dogpoke Looks like you're about to lose some money.

  • @junedeon Dude, you have no idea how you just made my day. I still have these guys on LP and cassette.

  • @drfittt No doubt. And by the way, looks like we finally hit the 100.000 mark in views. Proof that the good stuff never gets old!

  • @dogpoke anyone who has seen war live can appreciate this..I was 13 and saw them at santa clara university about 1976.......that was a show!

  • Thanks so much Junedeon for this. Although the vid is not the greatest it's so cool to see any footage from the OG's of WAR. I just closed my eyes and vibed with the song, imagining I was there. Don't understand why WAR is so underated, with all the iconic songs they have it's a shame they don't get their propers. Thanks for not letting them be forgotten. Peace Junedeon. WARQUEEN

  • @lowriderbandfan I hear you. Their sound was so eclectic and innovative,it defied popular categorization. Its not jazz. Its not R&B. Its not rock. "Its outta sight, its gone"

  • FANTASTIC GROUP

  • Great live version , they do a 16 min version on an old LP called Black Caucaus. Kool andthe gang and others on it too. If can find it check it out.

  • i love this group

  • One of the members was from San Diego, actually

  • Im 25 outta MIAMI, and MA dukes put me on WAR ever since my born date. Maybe why I got into early trouble with the negative establishment, but I am stronger for that and have no regrets. PEACE. lets live, together, or perish forever.

  • I love this song, I play Lee Oskar harmonicas now!

  • Do you like the sound better than Honer's.

  • I can bend the notes better and it's easier to clean because there is no wood. But they both are just as good to me.

  • Esta macanudo, es un clasico

  • amazing sound, i know War for a long time but never heard that song. It's awesome, especially the beginning.

  • Blown away that a group of individuals could create that sound

  • KICK ASS TUNE!

  • they call me a gypsy man

they call me a gypsy man

they call me a gypsy man

coz i dont stay in one place too long

  • War are from Compton and Los Angeles except the harmonica player who is actually Danish.

  • I think papa dee allen was from delaware though...

  • Southern cali...longbeach i believe.

  • Torrance, long beach and san pedro actually...

  • I see the one who plays harmonicas is the only white guy there. thats been of a curiosity for me ever since I was a child. Where is this band from? NY, CA?

  • from the geto's of east los angeles..the white guy is from sweden lee oskar.

  • wow! interesting!!

  • Good

  • The Dummer is the orginal one and only Harold Brown......HB in the pocket

  • Lee Oscar + Lonnie Jordan. Who's the drummer?

  • where are the new R & B bands

    the New Issac Hayes.Curtis Mayfield, Quiny Jones,Teddy Riley,Kool &the gang.Ohio Players,BT Express,Chic,Tower of Power,MFSB,War,EW&F,Slave,Jame s Brown,Rufus,Change,Gap Band,Instant Funk,

The old bands have to play their old stuff no problem

Well there is a problem Black Radio won't play their new stuff anway

Who to say it would be any good but can.t be any worser than what out here now

  • When I first looked for the original recording, I got this version and I hated it. But then I listened to it again and it grew on me. I've listened off and on for almost two years and . . . can you feel the energy. Kids today don't understand the instrumentals from back in the day. It's not about the words, it's about conveying a message, the feeling of the music, and the whole trip.. Lee Oskar. Wow. He made "Long Train Running" what it is and he didn't do to bad on this one either.

  • What I remember most is Lee's intensity when he played. I was blown away by his playing, and I'm talking about seeing War live at Howard Univ. in D.C. and other places a long time ago. Lee Oskar and War were a band that was untouchable by any band during that time.

  • I didn't know they did Paint it Black. I had the record. They didn't get their props. They are so harmonious. I also had the album with this song on it. Anybody know where I can get the soundtrack to River Niger(movie) by war?

  • Yep. They even did the Beatles "A Day In The Life" with Burdon. As far as the River Niger, I've been searching for THAT one myself.

  • Most of War's contributions to the RIVER NIGER soundtrack are on the Platinum Jazz LP/CD. If push comes to shove, it's on I-Tunes...or it WAS anyway.

  • The soundtrack was great, I still remember James Earl Jones reading his poem "I Am the River Niger" while the tune "I Got You" played in the background. Props to the band for wonderful music for the soundtrack and kudos to the film's musical director.

I loved the movie and can't say enough about War, I saw them perform at least six times during the mid 70's. That didn't make me a groupie did it? (smile)

  • Because negotiations between WMG and Youtube broke down over royalties.

  • WMG is deleted all War music from youtube.

  • why is that can u let me know why

  • @mayena

But the ones they left are awsome!

  • War is a finalist for 2009 inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!

  • Aug 26 2008

WAR at Art Park State Park in Lewiston NY

Along the banks of the Majestic Niagara

River. How can I go wrong. Livin the 70's

    YEAH!!

  • ive seen them,, well low rider band. but thats the real deal, lee oscer is the shit!

  • TUFF STUFF!!

  • papa dee had the anurysm and pass away.lee oskar is alive and better than ever playing with 4 original members if war they are called the lowriderband, com for more info

  • For those not familiar with WAR, I highly recommend listening to City Country City it is a musical masterpiece!

  • Thanks. I'd only heard of Burden doing some stuff with them but this has just blown me right away. Tis sublime to say the very least.

  • They did "Spill the Wine", "Paint it Black", "Nights in White Satin", "They Can't Take Away Our Music", "Magic Mountain", "Bare Back Ride", "Tobacco Road" and many more with Eric Burdon!!!

  • It most certainly is. Great driving song.

  • Enter "LEE OSKAR" in the search box and hear him playing at NAMM this year. He's alive and kickin' in Seattle, Washington. Still does that spaz twist to get to the bottom of his diaphragm....Great player from Northrn Europe.

  • Terrific band. Terrific song. That is some of the best jamming of the 70s.

  • THIS IS THE JAM!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Hey anybody know if Lee Oscar is still living thats him on the harmonica

  • I saw him this past Saturday night at the Highway 99 Blues Club in Seattle

  • bayıldım resmen yaaa bu benim grup.....diğer şarkılarını da isteriz;Thanks...: junedeon(another songs???This Group)

  • Great bands sound great even in a technically bad video. Five stars for War!

  • Ditto!

War is still the best band I ever know.

  • Yeah, the video quality isn't too good, and the same could be said for the audio. Still, this is clearly brilliant stuff --- jazz, blues, rock, soul, Latin, African all in one tune? Of course, this was typical of the band. Anyone out there remember Mandrill? Kind of the same concept, though that group might have a bit more of an edge. They don't make music like this anymore, and it's a good thing that this material is readily available. Kudos to the person who posted it.

  • mandrill or the mandella (with dom triono later of james gang and guess who?)

  • Solid, by Mandrill. a classic!

  • A real band, real music. You cant get any better than this. You can sit back and listen to this all night long. Where is (Why cant we be friends)I cant find it?

  • Great cruisin' down the highway song!

  • Most incredible group I've ever seen live in concert.

  • saw them live in 1976, they blew Ohio Players off the stage

  • comment back if you will but rumor had it papa dee allen passed away during this song is this true?

  • I am sorry I do not know, but please find it out how. I love War and really want to see it!

  • Actually, it is true. He suffered a brain anuersym(i'm not the best speller) during a performance of this song on August 30th,1988. As a result, the song was never performed live again. Hopefully that answered your question.

  • That is sad. I saw an anurysm take place and you feel so helpless. I watched a friend try to stand up after hitting his head on concrete only to drop again then convulse. Not a way to go out. I don`t think they should stop playing this but play it in his honor at each show. Maybe close with it. That would be more apropriate than letting this song be forgot. Papa foreva!

  • Este grupo The War es muy bueno y The gypsys Man es una rola que fue escrita y producida a principios de los 70¨so finales de los 60¨s antes de que Erick Buordon los sacara a la luuz publica, es de lo mejor de War

  • Well I do hope you get it put on BET, they can use some really good programming. By the way, my sister has the Greatest Hits by War, but I don't know how to put them on YouTube with just the music do you know?

  • If you put a picture to the audio it should work. :)

  • I`v seen these guys at the Los Angeles street scene Back in 1983.

    It was F**KIN` CRAZY!!

Thanks to the gang bangers we don`t have a LA street scene anymore.THANKS ASS HOLES! FOR RUNING A GREAT TIME.

  • all bass players should watch this video, thanks BB, my son is playing the bass no questions LOL

  • They are probably one of the greatest bands of all-time . I never seen them live but I've been turned on to them back in the 70s. I have "the best of war" cd and I never tire of it. My two boys are 7 & 9 yo. & we all sing "why can't we be friends" & "Cinco de Mayo" It's great music.

  • I saw them live, I drank with them and had fun with them. I remember when they would play at the colleges, like Howard University and they were the best. There's no band like them. Listen to all their songs and know that they were the best as well as Mandrill, Osebesa, the Old Earth, Wind & Fire and all the rest. I have very fond memories of that time period.

  • when i deliver at work and this song comes on ... i wait and take break niggah. it dont come around that often......... so take long break .. remember THIS WAR never shot at uh lets say the Styalistics or the TEMPTATIONS ... ( you seen where i m goin ) yeah i had a GANG we went to DRIVE - IN MOVIES , and good stuff and saw WAR open for Rod Stewart in sanjose back in 1973 i think all good for
