  • you have an awesome video..thanks for sharing!

  • Why is everyone from Expert Village retarded?

  • useless, utterly useless video. I think they should be called "village idiot" not "expert village" A battery can have over 12 volts and still need replacement if it drops below 9.4 volts after just one start.

I agree with other comments that testing the terminals and a load test is a much better way to determine if a battery needs to be replaced or not.

  • useless, utterly useless video. I think they should be called "village idiot" not "expert village"

  • According to my book, here's the order of battery tests: 1)Battery Terminal Test 2)Battery Leakage Test 3) State of Charge Test (that's when you use the hydrometer) 4) Open Circuit Voltage Test 5) Capacity Test a.k.a. Load Test (that's when you use the carbon pile load tester) 6) 3-min. Charge Test 7) Conductance Test and, finally, 8) Drain Test

  • i have that type of multimeter

and it reads 30DC (36DC when car runs) when in the 50dc scale

how much of my battery is charged??

my car wont crank if its a 25DC

  • butter shoes

  • i got the 12.8 V with car off. when started i got 13.6V is that good?

  • @zillsbury Yes, it means your alternator is charging your battery like it is supposed to.

  • @greywolf424 sometimes my BEL RX65 says low voltage and shuts off. the highest it reads while driving in 13.5 but most of the time it's in the high 12 voltage range.

  • @zillsbury Your alternator could be dying, how old is it? To test your alternator connect your multimeter to the battery it should be around 12.6 to 12.8. Start the engine and the voltage should go up around 13.4. to 13.6 or so.Then have someone turn on the head lights and heater (full).... the voltage should drop for a second or two then return to the 13 range, if it doesn't the alternator is probably worn out.

  • @greywolf424 my alternator is (my car is) a 1999 lexus es 300 with 150K miles. thanks for the info, i'll perform that check.

  • @greywolf424 ive got 12.0volt when car off and 14volt when on i know my alt is fine but looks like my battery is a little low

  • resistance ac or dc for the battey?

  • hmmm.. not everyone has a multimeter and knowhow to operate it.. Normal check. Leave car lights on (without having car turned on on gas) for 10 minutes, then try to start your car.. if it cranks instantly .. your battery is good.. else change it !.. Test 2: try to get a toy that runs on around 9-12 volts.. and try to run it with connectors from car battery.. if it does same thing on regular alkaline batteries for like 10 minutes, you are good.

  • who does not have a multimeter and who does not know how to use one? its a house hold item. if you dont know how to use one you are retarded

  • Free battery testing at an AutoZone/O'Reilly's..etc.. easily defeats the purpose of videos such as this one. He tries, but I find many things that I disagree with in the clip.

There are several factors involved with a low voltage battery, however this could make the video more complicated than what the title describes.

I considered doing a video for this, and there are so many making attempts at it as well.

  • Also, if you have a battery hydrometer, you can measure the specific gravity of each cell in the battery. If the specific gravity of any 2 cells differ by more than 0.050, then you need to replace the battery.

This guy is a disgrace to expert village and ASE certification. He's probably not even certified in electronics/electrical.

Eventhough analog meter is okay for testing battery state of charge, most auto techs nowadays only use high impedance meter to avoid damage to computer.

  • He didn't even remove the surface charge before checking the state of charge of the battery.

That test he did is not the proper way to know if you need a new battery. The right way is to use a carbon pile load tester. You set the carbon pile load tester to half the cold cranking amperage of the battery, then you load the battery for 15 seconds. The voltage should be 9.6 or higher during the 15 seconds of cranking.

  • can i ask you a ? is a number 1 the big mac meal, we all know you probaly work at mcdonalds

  • better then being a welfair bum like you cuz yer a crack head with aids :)

  • and i can see you cant spell

  • that meter needs to go in the garbage lol, get a digital more accurate. Also you need a carbon pile to test a battery, if using a meter you need to turn headlights on for 30 seconds then shut them off for 1min then test the voltage of the battery, reason for this is you need to load the batter to test the cca etc. Then the other thing to look at is why is the battery dead, Alternator not working?? Draw in the system?? Just pull the fuse its easier to check.

  • thanks. very helpful!

  • Even if the volt meter shows 12.8 volts, it could be old and worn only producing 100 cca's. That volt meter just became an obsolete tool in that case.

  • It's a very Dead battery.. is there such thing as a partially dead battery or completely? Dude just say its a dead batter below 11v

  • i want to put a second battery on my suv cause i have alot of bass can u help me out. If i connect my amplifier straight to the second battery how long until it drains if i have the bass up loud?

  • ahahaha loser using gloves a real man wouldnt

  • hahaha you prolbaly dont even work on your own stuff, let alone do it for a living

  • any one know how to charge a 12 battery s? i am try to build a electric car with 12 batteries total 120 volts . but how i do charge ??? can any one help me ,

  • Dont use ohms. Perform a voltage drop. There is no need to disconnect the battery. Dont use an analog meter. Test the charging system before automatically replacing the battery. ASE? Yea right...

  • 100% correct

  • Totally agree, also looking at why it might be dead to. A real ASE would say use a carbon pile to test the battery! Or the trick with loading the batter with the headlights to see if it regains the voltage back in the battery

  • @DaShadowInc ASE certifications are easy to get. I have 5 myself.

  • @nobleheight 5 tickets? o.O I have my Automotive ticket interprovincial :) alot longer to get that one then the ones you go for... How many ASE tickets are there I am considered to have them all plus some :) through that meter out lol use a carbon pile to test a battery you need to load half cca

  • @nobleheight I have my Automotive Tech ticket interprovincial red seal endorsed :)

You also missed the charge test if the battery does fall below 9.6volts, I can't remember the time I think its 30 seconds when charging if goes above 15 volts battery is no good, if below its just bad state of charge :) tip for ya... charge and retest if it falls below 9.6 again then its toast :) You won't find that in a text book :)

  • i know how to spell my name

  • very good video

  • Maybe this is funny, but most people don't know how to do it, especcialy old people or women...

  • i would get offended, but it's true :]

    -a 19 year old girl

  • hahahaha

  • these little videos are very good and very necessary.
