It's hard to keep consistent time without a drummer playing, but that's no excuse to not know your own music. Band doesn't seem very tight musically :-/ still write great music, plus this was early on.... they just need more live practice.. crowds are scary for musicians
One day they'll have several people backing them up. Because they will be that big; because their music is incredible. (Also that drummer is fckin talented!)
It's true, on this recording they are a bit rusty playing a new song on the road. But serious, Menomena are incredible live. I think they do a great job filling out their big sound with just three people.
a lot of it has to do with the fact that they only have 3 guys in their band. they have so many different parts and loops over-lapping on the cd, that there's just no way they can possibly recreate it all live. for only having 3 people, i think they do just about as well as they could to play the songs. they've even said it's hard to choose which parts to leave out and which to include.
My friends and I drove all the way down from the mountains to catch this show, only to be turned away at the door because we weren't told it was 21+ (I got a flyer that said all ages, for some reason, which surprised me since it was the Larimer Lounge, but...eh). Total bummer, but at least this exists on the internet, thanks!

The first minute and a half is just awful.
