  • No wonder Collapsing News Network (CNN) gets the worst ratings. Informed guests like Peter Schiff come on to state the facts and all the bimbo reporters can do is disagree. CNN is blatently pathetic now. Its really bad.

  • CNN's "Issue #1" is funny. They say the exact same thing every single show.

  • this is obama no 1 song please click on vice grip88 to see obama video

  • economical pressure obama will make it better

  • this is obama no 1 song issue 1 econoy please click on vicegrip88

  • the growth in GDP is BS, inflation isnt reported properly... CPI is manipulated... look at real numbers

  • If we didn't use a central banking system there would be no such thing as a recession. Privatly owned federal researve will be the down fall of the United States.

  • recession cleans up the bad debts and recession is vital for future economic growth, it is a medicine which the market must consume for future growth.

Obviously, the bald headed advisor is hired and paid by CNN to lie to the public. He cant be more stupid.

  • production=consumption+investment+gov't spending+ current account.

    Consumption is high

investment is high (paradoxical considering interest rates)

government spending is higher the heaven

current account is in the billions or trillions hell i dont even know but astronomical!

=Recession and have been in one for a long time

take GDP and shove it up W's ass!

  • This was hilarious!

peter was like, "hmmm, we agree..."

then he's like, "Well, i like the recession!" "Now we disagree!" lol

RON PAUL/PETER SCHIFF would be an awesome ticket.

  • The Dow Jones could be heading to 30000. When that happens a cup of coffee will probably be worth $40.

  • :O)

  • they can create (funny)money out of nothing but they cant create wealth out of nothing.

  • The fed watches these type of discussions and then adjusts the numbers so they can try to manipulate us into thinking maybe there will be no recession. If the numbers cant be adjusted, they simply drop the whole statistic off as a economic measuring tool.

  • Ron Paul is missing from that Candidate video in the background. What's that about?

    lol - MSM sucks ass

  • peter schiff is the ron paul of the economy

  • i agree, they need to have Schiff on these programs more often and for a longer segment. Peter is a damn genius, why do you think hes the president of euro pacific capitol?

  • The thing i always hate about these major news channels' debates/interviews is that it's always compressed into 5-8 minutes.

These soundbite-like discussions really aren't helping, and nobody is getting any wiser from them.

  • That's right. Thats why people should just listen to what their parents told them, save your money, don't get into debt, work hard.

Then we should demand the same of the government.

Anyone who tells you to spend, borrow and work less needs to be treated with extreme suspicion.

  • >it's always compressed into 5-8 minutes.

That's why you need well-funded and well-run public TV+radio. The market alone ain't cutting it.

  • The problem is, there *is* no market in broadcasting. The FCC has made quite sure of that. Their are scant few companies who are running all media outlets (including your public broadcasting corporation), ergo essentially creating a monopoly.

End the FCC, and its ridiculous regulations (regulations which are written by those few that are already in the game, by the way), and the market will truly give us what we want.

  • This is cable, so what FCC regulations do you mean? Accept a failure of the market here, figure out solutions, and move on.

  • Who do you think regulates cable? The Tooth Fairy? It's not a "Failure of the market" problem. It's a "creation of monopoly" problem.

    Only governments can create monopolies.

  • Media quality is low in the US, I think we agree.

Perhaps any Joe oughta be able to put wire under any sidewalk, but I doubt that would solve the problem. Who would do that to set up a news channel? Why not create a successful channel and sell it to the local cable operator?

Your argument is also getting weaker as more people have access to fast net access. What new competes with CNN/BBC/CBC/Fox/DW? Those are either large private bizes who need their ads sold or else state-funded affairs.

  • Yes, we agree that media quality is low in the US. You seem to be confused with the causality of that low media quality. My argument regarding more people have access to cable has nothing to do with the shrinking market/growing monopolies. So, you are incorrect to say my argument is getting weaker.

The market has to be a two way street. Even if eleventy billion people subscribe to cable services, only 5 companies own the lion's share of the media outlets. This is not a free market.

  • (cont.)

In a free market, anyone or any group of people with the capital should be able to create their own content, and then contract with a distributor to get that content broadcasted on whatever service is available (broadcast, cable, satellite, internet, what have you). The FCC creates a situation where most of the startup capital has to be devoted to buying the right to broadcast through licensing and other fees. Nevermind that all of us have that right naturally. per the Constitution.

  • So, those companies who already exist in the system have a much easier time expanding their role in The Game. Outsiders are forced to jump through hoops. After all, the regulations are written by the 5 companies who are presently maintaining the stranglehold.

So, My original argument stands. End the FCC, and you will actually allow media competition, and the creation of the media marketplace.

  • frith: you misread me.

I said: "more people have access to fast net".

Anyone can startup a video-by-net service, eg using set-top boxes or even to the PC, and offer whatever channels they want.

Where are those startups? Maybe it's not so easy to compete with CNN and maybe distribution isn't the only problem, or even the main problem.

  • Those startups are out there, and they have become very popular. And is a viable alternative to trad. media. (Obviously. 'We're soaking in it").The internet has become a big threat to traditional media outlets. Predictably, The FCC has begun over-regulating some sectors of the net. Especially those web-based broadcast services which could pose a real problem to the traditional broadcast establishment. Ironically the two biggest internet distributors are Time Warner and Comcast. 2 of the big 5

  • frith: There are no news channels comparable to CNN online. There is no video-by-net service comparable to cable TV.

Please provide your explanation of the above without invoking hypothetical future FCC (aka bogeyman) overregulation. (What regs?)

I say that a credible news channel requires a large investment in correspondents, anchors and other talent, plus the production. The market is saturated and many consummers are not aware of the low quality of current channels. It is a market failure.

  • It isn't a hypothetical future bogeyman. It is observable present-day fact. CNN has been able to make the investment into their high level of production, talent, etc because Turner was gifted his media mogul position by the feds. For many many years, CNN was the news channel. There was scant little possibility that another could compete. The only reason there are other news channels being offered by News Corps, and GE is because those companies had enough money to buy their way into the game.

  • If you want to know "What regs", try the simple act of setting up an internet radio station. Even if all broadcast rights are paid to writers/performers/record companies, the very real FCC has begun forcing these operations to obtain very official broadcast licensing at very high costs. These operations have all been forced to shut down as a result. There goes your alternatives to traditional broadcasts.

  • We were talking about news channels, originally CNN. Even most other tv channels have programming that they either produce (eg HBO) or buy directly from the producers (many).

Music-radio is a different story, so let's stick to the subject here. No weaseling out.

  • That dull roar you hear is the point flying over your head.

All of the major traditional media outlets.... radio, TV, what have you, is all owned by the same 5 companies. Therefore, it is completely analogous and valid to draw a comparison between network news and radio.

The FCC is quick to shut down internet radio. Therefore, they will be equally quick to put the kibosh on internet news video, when it threatens the traditional outlets.

    QED

  • jcfrith: You're already resorting to insult, but I'll make a last attempt at getting a straight answer from you.

By "outlet" you seem to mean broadcaster over the radiowaves. These are regulated, spectrum is limited.

However, one can use the internet for transport. You can get The Onion TV channel, after all. Of course, The Onion isn't an expensive real news org and they don't many viewers.

You are asked to explain why we don't have a free unbiased video news channel over the net.

    Not music.

  • I've already sufficiently explained why we don't have a free unbiased video news channel over the net, yet you are all too quick to dismiss valid analogous examples.

The reason we don't have a free unbiased video news channel over the net is because the traditional media monopoly will not allow it. They use the FCC as their cudgel.

That's your answer. Ignore this truth at your own peril.

  • jcfrith: still re unavailable alternative news outlets, a couple of points to think about:

    i) cable ops won't carry english al-jazeera, not because of FCC. (btw, eng. al-jazeera is real watchable, can't speak to the arabic version.)

ii) there is a widespread 'net daily 1-hour news: Democracy Now, hosted by Amy Goodman. It's funded by voluntary contributions, but you have to be generous to contribute, cos all can watch, so I have no idea if that is Libertarian kosher. Also, it bends pretty left.

  • It's like talking to a brick wall.

  • cavuto is better. he is more anti-schiff which brings a more exciting discussion.

  • cavuto is an idiot who doesn't even let his guests talk, if they say something he doesn't like he tells them esentially to shut up and cuts them off.

  • hmm eggs 1.99 a dozen where they used to be .79 a dozen.

hamburger used to be .99 a lb now its 2.29 if your lucky.

bank on dry and canned goods . you'll be glad you did!

  • I am so sick of that dumb question. WE ARE IN A RECESSION AND SOON IT WILL BE A DEPRESSION. Government numbers are like a great fable.

  • you know what's funny? Canada, with its huge commodity base, had negative growth. It doesn't make sense!!!
