That roar variation was used on most programs produced by MGM from 1964-1971, such as "The Man From UNCLE," "Please Don't Eat the Daisies," and "Then Came Bronson."
MGM Kids Home Entertainment defeats MGM Children's Matinees and MGM/UA Family Entertainment. The MGM Kids logo has Leo, Jr. and is what I prefer(typo?) a TRUE kids' logo.
It was part of MGM family / childrens movies they re-released in the early 1970's- I saw many of them including TheWizard of Oz at the theater and they stared off like this - also National Velvet had the same tag at the begining....................
Man, listen! Them dudez who put that logo on with that lion roaring. All that did was corrupt the poor innocent minds of those very young children who watched those movies and they had to first watch that logo appear. They had to sleep and catch nightmares off of that. Especially the sound of the lion back then? That's more like a HORROR SCENE playing before the childrens mattinee. MGM producers shoulda caught a lawsuit off of that! That was so NOT NEEDED!
@segasonic623 - I already don't like the lion's roar (probably because when I watch my Stargate SG-1 DVDs, I have the volume up too much), so this logo would have TERRIFIED me when I was a kid!
It was also used in the early 1970s -- I remember there were two children's matinees released by MGM in early 1973 that used this logo: "The Phantom Tollbooth" and "The Secret Garden".
The lion never scared me when I was little
The Rainbow WDTV castle did however (DAMN YOU WIERD TEXT FONTS AND FADE TO BUNEA VISTA AND HEAT DISTORTION ON THE TOP OF THE CASTLE)

As Zack says in "The Misfortune Cookie":
"In the middle of the screen was... a lion! The MGM lion. It was roaring at me!"
Maybe we should stick to MGM cubs.

What year did this come out?

This logo is unusually common simply because it appears on a trailer included on the "Wizard of Oz" DVD by Time Warner.

I think this was included in a early 1970s rerelease trailer for "The Wizard of Oz"

Let's hope that 'Hot Tub Time Machine' will save MGM-Leo The Lion's not looking so good these days.

I mis-read that as 'Children's Mattress'. I do like the use of the Mary Tyler Moore font and overall graphic design work.

Children's logo, hmm? That lion roar might suddenly surprise the little folks who are watching this logo.

@segasonic623 Thankfully, though, the parents are usually watching the movie with the children.

Does anyone know what specific movies this logo was used for?

I remember that two years ago!

That logo was from the '60's, used when a movie would re-released by MGM as a children's matinee.
Neville6000 2 years ago 2
I know that.
