@jered91 I'd respect that if you weren't posting the comment on a Dragon Quest IX video. IX was pitiful boring had a terrible story with no character development since you made the characters and was far to easy. VII and all the old ones were awesome though. IX's only redeeming feature was this battle theme what a waste.
@deadnbacklolubad IV V and VI to me are the TRUE Final Fantasy's imo, as they are the only ones that the game battle system and style has kept over more than one game.
What are you talking about man?When talking about the battle system of those games,yeah they are completely new and fresh(different anyway).dont get me wrong i love both franchises equally.Uematsu is great but you should also check Sakimotos other works like valkyria chronicles and Vagrant story.Im a proffessional musician so i know a little bit more than most ppl here about music;)
@captainyoshi you should!!! this was my first also and because of it, i have found DQ IV AND V for DS. and in my honest opinion both have great stories compared to this one.
I always did like this theme, while monotonous, it did make a battle more interesting. especially on the snowfields. the echoes in the background fit that area well.
Comparing this to FF13 just proves, once again, that superior technology doesnt exactly mean better games. I'm waiting for my copy to arrive next week along side mega man zero colllection, cannot wait! :O
I LOVE this game. I'd go for DQ9 then FF13 ANY DAY. Battle music is <333. Especially when you need to grind for that special boss. Keeps me goin' man! Played since 10pm-6am once! LOL.

Any real musician should be able to comprehend the melodic brilliance of this song. It's a progressive masterpiece. Easily one of, if not THE best DQ/DW battle theme.
@Xero2021 I don't know about anyone else, but the grammar mistakes killed me a little on the inside every time. I got used to it, but still... We didn't need a direct translation, we still need it to make sense.
Imagine my surprise when they were playing it on Nintendo Week and even there the camera caught "The enemy are defeated." So obviously Nintendo must have noticed it...
Does it say 'The enemy are defeated' even when you only have a battle with a single monster? Because 'enemy' can be used as plural when using old english.
DQ battle themes seem to be getting more coherent, not saying that the previous ones weren't, but there was a certain rhythm that they didn't follow. Love this!
@chocobunneh Haha, I had the same situation as you. It's growing to be my favourite too. If only they had the orchestrated/symphonic suite music packed into the game rather than the traditional synth output, it'd be even more epic.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@UnderAvg There's nothing "low quality" about it. It utilizes traditional synth sounds to give a very retro feeling, which is basically the point of the ENTIRE GAME.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@PrimalLight2323 Okay, then low quality was a misused word. I know about the whole "retro feeling" business; so don't go all "-___- ugh", I'm not a DQ newbie. I just feel that they could have stuck with using just the original sound effects (casting spell, miss, etc) for that. They redid the entire OST with the PS2 remake of V in Japan. And "retro feeling" is not the "point of the ENTIRE GAME"; the main idea is just to keep continuity and tradition.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
That may be true about the PS2 release, but the DS port features simplified synth instruments. The songs also have a much higher compression to minimize size.
DQIX was initially described as a "classic Dragon title". They're intentions were to pay homage to the series in its entirety, and using video-game-esque VSTs and soundfonts was the best way to maintain its musical integrity.
Lastly, the soundtrack exemplifies Sugiyama's progressive influence. The choice of instruments capture it well.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@PrimalLight2323 I wasn't expecting a full orchestral score for IX, of course; I just wanted it to be less beepy-sounding. But yeah, you are right about DQ IX being a return to the classic style. But practically all of the DS releases of DQ use the same synth sounds, so I didn't really feel a "homage to the series" from IX.
In My Opinion this is one of the bests battle Themes of all rpgs ( Top 10 Certainly) listen again that song and look to the addction of gorgeous bass and powefull drums !!!
Yeah, I also love the new battle theme. Especially the bass line is great, reminds me of old RPGs like Chrono Trigger which also had great bass lines in their songs.
I agree with you on that, to me it doesn't have the same charm as the rest of the series battle themes. But I think the new overture and pub theme totally compensate for that. Koichi Sugiyama never fails do deliver.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I'm not sure which will be better. Final Fantasy fell off after FFX and Dragon Quest hasn't been that great since DQV (haven't played VI). I hope DQIX and FFXIII are fun, but we'll see.
I got bored once I got the boat. I'm going to give it another chance sometime, but I didn't like the battle system and story all that much. It had nice visuals and music though.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@1337BleachFan mm....i dunno. I think FF13 has got DQ9 beat as far as appeal from US players. Its more flashy and the graphics are sublime. FF arguably has a larger fanbase than DQ series as well. I think it better to say that 2010 is a great year for games in general, two awsome jrpgs and more headed in the fall and winter.
Not including America, Europe & elsewhere, in Japan alone Dragon Quest IX sold through 4.26 million copies to end the fiscal calendar. Conversely, Final Fantasy XIII sold 5.55 but that includes all territories -- in Japan alone it only did 1.85 which is HORRIBLE for that series. FFXIII has been something of a disaster for SquareEnix lately because it's been sucking worse and worse whereas DQ remains consistant no matter what platform it's on (as evidenced by the NDS).
@KarateCop Yes my friend but you must consider a few factors you did not.Ppl owning the ps3 are much fewer in Japan than the ds,even though ps3 is doing great in comparison with the xbox.Thats why the sales figures is 1.85 million in japan.If ff13 was released on the ds you would see almost similar sales(not so many,DQ is the king in Japan).Or better if ps3 was like ps2 in sales,then the ff13 would sell more than 5 million there.
The simple fact of the matter is that DQ has been the most consistant top-seller in Japan whereas FF has been sliding down the scales farther and farther. FF simply isn't the same (great) series that it used to be, whereas DQ has retained its formula to a T. Same producer, same director, same scenario writer, same composer, et al. They may as well have killed FF off when Hironobu Sakaguchi left and Nobuo Uematsu got lazy. There is no comparison -- DQ blows FF out of the water.
@KarateCop, they're also different kinds of RPGs. Final Fantasy tends to get rather angsty, whereas Dragon Quest stays relatively light and cheerful, and isn't afraid to stop taking itself seriously (being made temporary King/Queen in Dragon Quest III was awesome). I wonder how much that has to do with it, perhaps Japanese gamers are starting to get sick of the constant whiny angst factor of Final Fantasy?
I'd say that the Japanese gamers tend to enjoy the whimsical fantasy setting, the top-notch writing and the consistant gameplay/soundtrack. These staples ensure that DQ will maintain its popularity. Today, FF lacks distinction from other similar RPGs and is no longer the benchmark -- it no longer sets a standard for others to follow -- unlike I-VII. There used to be a clear difference between FF and other RPGs of the bygone era. They set a high benchmark which has since fallen.
@KarateCop, I like the whimsical fantasy setting too hehe... While I enjoyed earlier FF games (like 1-7, 8 was a bit meh, I haven't played 9 but I hear it's good) they just seem a bit repetitive now. And while I enjoyed additions such as the Active Battle Timer used from 4 onwards (with visible bars in 5, yay!), their battle systems just seem kind of weird and convoluted now. With Dragon Quest, I know I'll get a good, if slightly old fashioned, battle system, and a fun and cute world to play in.
FFIX is decent but not as good as previous installments. Square's problem is that they keep trying to reinvent the wheel to compensate for lack of depth and a lackluster soundtrack but, as you said, it just becomes too drawn out & convoluted. The character designs are all custom-tailored for cosplay rather than basing it off an interesting plot along with an imaginative world. Also, the lead male is always designed like a metrosexual. What a turn-off.
@KarateCop, I did enjoy the remakes of Final Fantasy III and IV on the DS, hopefully they'll remake V and VI, especially V with its fun job system (and fun music), on the 3DS. For Final Fantasy to have any chance of restoring its previous good name, WE NEED 3D BUTZ!
FFV didn't have a great soundtrack. Both IV and VI decimate V in that department. To restore the FF franchise would be nearly impossible at this point. As I said, most of the original creators are gone. Even if they could get Nobuo back, he's simply nowhere near as good as he used to be. They'd need a producer who demanded a certain level of quality and a director who could do likewise.
@KarateCop Well even though FF changed its formula in the last 2 games it doesnt mean that they are bad in any way.They are just different.I prefer this situation cause,if i have the mood for the more traditional,i play my beloved DQ,if i want some new mechanics i insert FF13 or 12.Uematsu didnt write for FF12 but then again Sakimoto for me is the better composer so it didnt bother me.Evolving and staying traditional are both good things if done properly.
It's funny that you said "new mechanics" since there's nothing really new or revolutionary about the play mechanics of FFXII-XIII. Sakimoto is nowhere near as good as Nobuo used to be. You may say "that's a matter of opinion" but most people seem to agree with my sentiment. There are plenty of opinions given about the new soundtrack and most people think it's dull. When it comes to "what FF used to be VS what it has become" dispute, it's not even a contest.
@KarateCop What are you talking about man?When talking about the battle system of those games,yeah they are completely new and fresh(different anyway).dont get me wrong i love both franchises equally.Uematsu is great but you should also check Sakimotos other works like valkyria chronicles and Vagrant story.Im a proffessional musician so i know a little bit more than most ppl here about music;)
Sugiyama is definitely one of the best, but the best? I don't know. He's definitely top 3 and one of the most consistant.
FFXII-XIII have new/renovated battle systems for the series itself but aren't groundbreaking. Sakimoto was good way back when but is no longer anything special IMO.
P.S. I'm also a musician but that doesn't necessarily entail being more knowledgeable than anyone else, except maybe in theory/counterpoint. Still, my opinion is not "superior" as a result.
As a matter of fact, while composing, I've found that theory doesn't really add much of anything. From my experience, composing good music is not a matter of breaking down particulars but rather the result of inspired creativity and a having a good ear.
@KarateCop Sry for answering so late.Its true that inspired creativity and the good ear are the keys to great music but just having those are not enough.You just have to have the tools too and to me Sugiyama is by far the most experienced and trained(not sure is the right word)composer and the most gifted anyway.Sakimoto coming second.Dont get me wrong,i love Uematsu's music.i adore it actually.
Well what do you mean by "just having those are not enough"? A highly creative imagination and a good ear always take precedence over any formulative theory. Experience is of course a necessary prerequisite -- as the saying goes, "Skill to do comes of doing." It doesn't matter if the composer has just a simple MIDI program or a million dollars' worth of equipment. Bach wrote masterpieces with nothing more than a few sheets of manuscript, a pen and his unique imagination.
No matter how much formal training a person undergoes nor how many instruments/equipment, a composer only becomes good through much experience and practice, and having a good ear (e.g. sense of timing, melodic shape, harmonic motion, etc.). There is no substitute. You could train for a decade in the most acclaimed music academies and still be an incompetent composer. Being a good composer has nothing to do with education and everything to do with a good work ethic and persistance.

Then after listening to it a few dozen times, it's become probably the best battle theme in the series for me.
Funny how these things turn out.
chocobunneh 1 year ago 3
@chocobunneh Haha, I had the same situation as you. It's growing to be my favourite too. If only they had the orchestrated/symphonic suite music packed into the game rather than the traditional synth output, it'd be even more epic.

@jered91 Well FFTA2 is on the DS, and the music is very high quality... for a DS game.

Great melody but... why the low quality sound???
UnderAvg 1 year ago

@UnderAvg There's nothing "low quality" about it. It utilizes traditional synth sounds to give a very retro feeling, which is basically the point of the ENTIRE GAME.

I agree with you on that, to me it doesn't have the same charm as the rest of the series battle themes. But I think the new overture and pub theme totally compensate for that. Koichi Sugiyama never fails do deliver.

I'm not sure which will be better. Final Fantasy fell off after FFX and Dragon Quest hasn't been that great since DQV (haven't played VI). I hope DQIX and FFXIII are fun, but we'll see.

MsNonoe 1 year ago
@MsNonoe
KarateCop 1 year ago
@KarateCop Yes my friend but you must consider a few factors you did not.Ppl owning the ps3 are much fewer in Japan than the ds,even though ps3 is doing great in comparison with the xbox.Thats why the sales figures is 1.85 million in japan.If ff13 was released on the ds you would see almost similar sales(not so many,DQ is the king in Japan).Or better if ps3 was like ps2 in sales,then the ff13 would sell more than 5 million there.
VFellhn 1 year ago
@VFellhn
KarateCop 1 year ago
@KarateCop, they're also different kinds of RPGs. Final Fantasy tends to get rather angsty, whereas Dragon Quest stays relatively light and cheerful, and isn't afraid to stop taking itself seriously (being made temporary King/Queen in Dragon Quest III was awesome). I wonder how much that has to do with it, perhaps Japanese gamers are starting to get sick of the constant whiny angst factor of Final Fantasy?
geekymarianne 1 year ago
@geekymarianne
KarateCop 1 year ago
@KarateCop, I like the whimsical fantasy setting too hehe... While I enjoyed earlier FF games (like 1-7, 8 was a bit meh, I haven't played 9 but I hear it's good) they just seem a bit repetitive now. And while I enjoyed additions such as the Active Battle Timer used from 4 onwards (with visible bars in 5, yay!), their battle systems just seem kind of weird and convoluted now. With Dragon Quest, I know I'll get a good, if slightly old fashioned, battle system, and a fun and cute world to play in.
geekymarianne 1 year ago
@geekymarianne
The charm is gone.
KarateCop 1 year ago
@KarateCop, I did enjoy the remakes of Final Fantasy III and IV on the DS, hopefully they'll remake V and VI, especially V with its fun job system (and fun music), on the 3DS. For Final Fantasy to have any chance of restoring its previous good name, WE NEED 3D BUTZ!
geekymarianne 1 year ago
@geekymarianne
KarateCop 1 year ago
@KarateCop Well even though FF changed its formula in the last 2 games it doesnt mean that they are bad in any way.They are just different.I prefer this situation cause,if i have the mood for the more traditional,i play my beloved DQ,if i want some new mechanics i insert FF13 or 12.Uematsu didnt write for FF12 but then again Sakimoto for me is the better composer so it didnt bother me.Evolving and staying traditional are both good things if done properly.
VFellhn 1 year ago
@VFellhn
KarateCop 1 year ago
@KarateCop What are you talking about man?When talking about the battle system of those games,yeah they are completely new and fresh(different anyway).dont get me wrong i love both franchises equally.Uematsu is great but you should also check Sakimotos other works like valkyria chronicles and Vagrant story.Im a proffessional musician so i know a little bit more than most ppl here about music;)
VFellhn 1 year ago
@VFellhn
KarateCop 1 year ago
@VFellhn
As a matter of fact, while composing, I've found that theory doesn't really add much of anything. From my experience, composing good music is not a matter of breaking down particulars but rather the result of inspired creativity and a having a good ear.
KarateCop 1 year ago
@KarateCop Sry for answering so late.Its true that inspired creativity and the good ear are the keys to great music but just having those are not enough.You just have to have the tools too and to me Sugiyama is by far the most experienced and trained(not sure is the right word)composer and the most gifted anyway.Sakimoto coming second.Dont get me wrong,i love Uematsu's music.i adore it actually.
VFellhn 1 year ago
@VFellhn
KarateCop 1 year ago
@VFellhn
