I think it's to protect the knuckles because they don't wear gloves.

There are a few reasons: to protect the face from cuts made by bare fists which would make the fight a bloody mess and too often they'd be stopped due to cuts. They won't use gloves like MMA cause it would go against the no protections or pads idea and finally to proctect and encourage the use of various techniques instead of just becoming a boxing match trying to score a KO from a punch that is easier to connect than other strikes

@tehbomb - Sorry to say this but you are wrong.... I have been training for 10 years now in Kyokushin now... and it sounds like you are not Kyokushinka...

We don't strike the face in kumite cause our kumite is based on skill and spirit thats all... why train to break the face if what you say is true. Repeat - Conditioned hands can break the face, OSU...

hi! :D in Finland is kyokushin style called shiai kyokushin and there you can hit one in the face, but it still taughts the rela kyokushin aswell...
