What you are asking is akin to asking which pickup truck is more powerful. Comparing guns in a similar class you'll find them about the same. Comparing a Mares Mini to a 3-band Openwater Hunting gun, of course the band gun is FAR more powerful. Compare a JBL travel combo to a long Mares Cyrano gun and again it'll be no contest as the Cyrano is a larger more powerful gun.
@Hotpants1231 mares cyrano spearguns are the most famous airguns in the market, all divers that choose to go with pneumatic should have one or more...
under the water there is not much more resistance against the spear, but enough to make a difference. Thats pretty much it, but i have fired my guns out of water each when i bought them as a test, as a large area of water is not easy acess for me :D just be ULTRA CAREFUL!
thanks, I realized something too, couldn't you solve the piston problem by not using a piston to fire the spear. couldn't they just use pure air power to fire the spear, I know it would block your view temporarely with bubbles but it would launch at probably around twice the speed
yeah they probably know that, im sure you could find one on the net somewhere, but if you had any more power in your gun than a normal rubber sling one (which is what i use), then there wouldnt be a fish once you hit it, it would simply explode :P
Water is 800 times denser than air, so you can imagine how much faster and with more power a spear shaft will travel if fired out of the water. The guns are not designed to take the force of the shaft reaching the end of the line and could very easily break the muzzle or the line. Be careful when thinking of using a speargun out of the water... it is NOT recommended.
I have a mares cyrano 550, I've used it for seven years and never had to fill it up with air, you realise it doesn't lose air when it fires? It just forces the piston forward.
Eventually all pneumatic guns need to be serviced by an authorized service center. The seals and o-rings that help maintain your air charge will need to be replaced. This should ONLY be performed by a technician trained in the servicing of your particular spear gun.
Spear guns can cost slightly less than $150 and go up from there. More importantly though is determining the gun you need for the spearfishing you plan on doing. Smaller guns for smaller game and tighter confines, longer guns for larger fish and open water hunting.
Im a beginner spear fisher i have a banded gun n my mate has a air gun same size and my mates gun is so much better way more power and accuracy is better i believe coz the spear moves faster so hit the target(fish) first
Keep in mind the types of guns being compared. It is a little bit like saying a car with a 4 cylinder engine is less powerful than one with an 8 cylinder enging. Band guns can be weaker or more powerful than a pneumatic based on the number and thickness of the bands they are using. More bands, more power. Fewer bands, less power.
Over the years I've found the accuracy of each to be pretty equal. Just as with any other sort of shooting, the gun is generally only as accurate as the user.
Hey man nice concept, would appreciate a little more detail in your next video, eg effective range, sizes, where each is best suited, different loading techniques, brands, pricing etc. Cheers
I found a great gun with two bands, but will it work from a boat, shooting gar and buffalo fish. Because I'm not much good for bowfishing.
Arainiad08 11 months ago
@Arainiad08 It is never advisable to cock a speargun OUT of the water. It can be very dangerous to the user and those around them.

slide in the shaft... thats what she said
theeverythinggeek828 1 year ago
Sure it can! That would be a very big issue for scuba divers if it could not.

SO WHICH ONE'S MORE POWERFULL???
7150285 1 year ago
the pneumatic works like a nerf gun... a much deadlier and more powerful nerf gun..

hey what is a better gun for a beginner diver to use and which is more expencive and what do you think i should get?
tykauai 1 year ago
@tykauai Either type of gun would work wonderfully for a beginner or an expert alike and can be of very similar pricing.
scubacom 1 year ago
@tykauai i would go for the band one since it doesnt make nearly as much sound as the pneumatic so it doesn't scare away all the fish
Brokenwindoww 1 year ago
@Brokenwindoww That is one theory, but most of your open water hunters tend to lean toward the band style guns.

Keeping in mind that test firing of any speargun OUT of the water is extremely dangerous and should never be done.
scubacom 2 years ago
well taht was all quite obvious stuff..... umm test firing maybe??
takemasu45 2 years ago
how is it dangerous? I know they are incredibly powerful but how does water make these things safer. I'm new to spearguns so please inform me

when u put the spear in it compress the air in it not pump
son8god8damn 3 years ago
that tought me nothing
bruzacruza 3 years ago
if your not a women you can load a pneumatic.
it's shorter usually mine is less than the length of my arm...loaded.& my wrist unloaded.
so im not chasing a fish with a scaffold pole.
accuracy well still ok if your near but im in uk water so only 4m matters...my line is less than that anyway.
no band rot & home made short sleeve hides it away from gun phobic english on our boats.
p.s. his review was rubbish & obvious...
k956upg 3 years ago
actually banded guns are more accurate because Pneumatic guns have a shorter spear so after a few metres the spear goes all wonk.
