1 of the reasons a common muslim cannot do ijtihad bcoz he doesnt know arabic, you have to be expert at arabic. bcoz in arabic there are many words that are based on other root words e.g islam comes from a root word that is salam or salem. and many words have different meanings. i.e "ayom" means 1 day and another meaning is a period of time, if a person who doesnt know arabic, he will intreprate the wrong way.
