  • Graham Chapman's tremolo is absolutely scary. What wonderful music these guys made. It sounds as fresh and visceral today as it did 40+ years ago.

  • Rogers voice..........like a bleating ram in the mating season..........Family were magnificent

    Jim

  • Funny how the guitar chords on the original single were edited out.

  • ONE OF THE FIRST RECORDS I BOUGHT WITH A PICTURE SLEEVE. GREAT.

  • My cousin Cindy was a friend of Lead vocalist Roger Chapman, and I met him a couple of times. Very distinctive voice, - and this, in my humble opinion, is one of the greatest songs ever written and recorded. Roger went on to form 'Streetwalker'

  • Banda Excelente!

  • I was an 18-y-o in 1972 and was walking around loving every moment of Tull, Alex Harvey - and Family. No wonder I'm on here every night re-living it all. Superb music.

  • I'm another lucky one that got to see them live in the 60's. In those days I saw so many bands and always under the influence of something that I probably only remember 10% of them. But this band was a standout, and I still listen to them to this day... and still have all their original vinyl releases.

  • great voice!

  • Something very special when such a unique voice is a wonderful match to a truly original piece of music. I was only lucky enough to see them once, but memorable

  • a superb band

  • Chappo could certainly belt it out with the best of them..A true masterpiece. Thank you for the memories

  • its good,he can sing, could av been a rainbow singer

  • Is this the most underestimated rock song ever? For me it is.

  • I too discovered Family in 1969, but on 3 tabs of Microdot! Loved them all these years, and I'm 72. They were great! No,I enjoy music far better now without the microdot....chuckle.....we all have to grow up sometime.

  • I discovered Family at the start of 1969 in one of the free friday evening concerts given on Hampstead Heath, but the band was only one of about a dozen of those that were to become great household names in later years.

When the 'heath' finished it was back to Drury Lane and an 'allnighter' with much the same line-up. It was here in this venue that Chappo gave his best, and I, like so many others, followed this group everywhere to recreate the sensation! The band gave of itself. The fans also!

  • @1978Rail One of those Parliament Hill Fields gigs was my first introduction to 'the scene' ...Taste, Fleetwood Mac, Duster Bennet, Edgar Broughton etc

Saw family several times also...Happy Days !

  • Much better sound this one!

  • Excellent - the first prog. rock track that 'got' me ..... I guess I was about 16?

  • family is very cool this is old shit

  • The Greatest prog. rock track ever. Always sends a shiver up my spine. Who remembers this played on the Brilliant station RNI back in the 70s. Great days. So much better than all the shite played on the 20 track repeat stations in the UK today. Must be the finest sax solo of all time on this original studio mix. Thanks for posting.... Long may YouTube live...

  • best folk rock song EVER!

  • iF MUSCLES DON'T TURN TO QUIVERING JELLY YOU'RE NOT LISTENING.

  • AWESOME

  • Family were brilliant. Saw them at the City Hall in Newcastle in 1971 I think it was (In My Own Time was in the charts at the time). They did a magnificent version of this. Nobody like Roger Chapman. America were the support band as well who we'd never heard of but they were great as well, by heck those were the days.

  • Yes this takes me back to the late 60s/early 70s and the north London pub/club circuit. I first saw Family at the Wake Arms in Epping and have been entranced ever since. Followed them to the Cooks Ferry Inn (Edmonton), Roundhouse (Chalk Farm), Roundhouse (Dagenham), Croydon and a multitude of wonderful outdoor festivals until the big boys messed everything up with the Isle of Wight. Magic!

  • You lucky bugger you. Fantastic stuff. All too sad what happened to Rik Grech, but Roger is still extant.

  • I remember them at the Dagenham Roundhouse. I was one of the 'Village' regulars. Brilliant band! Brilliant song!

  • Brilliant song, moving lyrics. Roger Chapman has one of the most haunting voices i have ever heard

  • This was the first band i ever saw live... Fairfield Hall in Croydon... my relationship with music was changed forever from then on... I seem to remember the lead guitarist playing a really cool double neck guitar (although ihe memory is kinda hazy now) ... I too wish they got better recognition, but they'll always have my appreciation and admiration...!

  • Yes...Charlie Whitney always played his 6 and 12 string double neck...amazing band those vocals...can you imagine what the x factor judges would make of those vocals?

    Jim

  • This is the version with the short intro without the wah-wah guitar :-(

    Great band anyway!

  • ..wow this song simply makes my flesh crawl

  • Drugs did this.

  • I still have this lp. It's fantastic! It seems nobody knows who they are these days,

but I do. Thanks for posting this.

    Bob

  • I do too! ... In fact, when checking your favourites, I went straight to that clip!!! ;-D

  • Saw them live in Newcastle many years ago, still one of the best bands live I ever saw

  • and so do I; just bought the cd, in summer, and kept playing it.

  • They made some great music,it's a shame it's not remembered by the radio stations!

  • @Kegwithlegs .. screw the radio stations .. as long as YouTube remembers 'em.
